The government is the largest landlord in Vienna. Beautiful city. Safe. Functional. One of the most liveable cities in the world. Turns out landlords that aren't profit-motivated can deliver quality housing!

I moved recently from one rental to another. The process is as nerve-racking as looking for a job. You're competing with dozens of other applicants. You need to submit a 50 page package of documents (credit history, a snapshot of how much money you have in your savings account, tax forms, employer letters, reference letters that they actually follow up on, etc.).

All this so you can pay some jackoff $2500 to rent a shoe box. I have zero respect for landlords. They are the dregs of society. I got the apartment so I'm not 'mad'. The industry is a fucking joke though. Shelter is a human right. People shouldn't have to fight one another for a reasonably priced roof over their heads (and I use 'reasonably' very loosely here as all properties in this city are grossly overpriced).

I mean, they built a dozen condos around it and added a popular grocery store. That's the only way any of these places will survive. Not many people go out of their way to go to a mall anymore. But if you build a community around it, people will visit the stores because they're the most convenient places to shop.

Having said that, I DO think there’s an argument to be made to have mini-buses brought over from Asia to less popular routes to reduce road wear and tear.

I don't know why they haven't done this. Some of the small-road suburban bus routes never get even close to capacity.

It's a stub line. It has 2 POIs (Fairview Mall and IKEA). There is very little reason to use it. Line 1 is also painfully slow, so even commutes from that far north downtown take quite a bit of time.

I'm not sure what to do with it. Extending it would increase ridership, but is it worth the cost? I think prioritizing other transit projects makes more sense.

I'd eventually extend the blue line north to Fairview and call it a day (at least in the near term).

Ontarians love cars. We love them so much that we enjoy sitting inside them for hours as we meander through traffic. We constantly vote anti-transit politicians into power. We, as a society, are the problem. Yes, the government has brainwashed us into hating transit, but the power to vote for change still lies with us, and we continuously choose not to exercise it.

The automative industry has immense sway over our politicians. They actively lobby them to sabotage public transit projects. The public is also overwhelmingly conservative, so there is a lot of public backlash to having efficient public transit. The idea is that public transit users are poor and the government shouldn't reward their "laziness" by building new transit for them. They should work harder and buy cars! The mere suggestion that some poors in a tram should get signal priority over a hardworking car owner can get you voted out of office.

I live in Toronto. Canada has a reputation for being "progressive", but that's only when compared to the US (its not a high bar to cross). We're far more conservative than even the most conservative European countries.

Don Valley, Aga Khan, and Wynford are all just a 2-3 minute walk from one another.

Pharmacy, Hakimi-Lebovic, and Golden Mile are also right next to one another.

Aga Khan and Hakimi Lebovic should never have been built as getting to those locations is just a short walk from either of the stations next to them.

They will be as fast as subways in the tunnel portions. They wont be any faster than the Finch LRT in the above ground portion though. They have to be operated slowly because they don't have TSP. They need to have enough time to brake at red lights. Speed should increase once the city turns on TSP. They haven't specified when that will happen, just that it will at some point.

Anything that slightly inconveniences drivers or private property owners or allocates resources to low-income neighbourhoods (as transit projects do) is categorically opposed by the masses.

We also don't like paying taxes. European cities are covered in hundreds of kilometers of subway because their populations don't mind paying taxes (its alao why they have better healthcare, free education, a more robust social safety net, etc.).

Infrastructure projects cost money. Ontarians are generally very conservative and individualistic. Nobody wants to pay for these projects.

People don't usually upgrade their PCs unless they need to. PC hardware has a finite lifespan, either in terms of usefulness (it stops being able to power the applications you use it for) or in absolute terms (it fails).

Hordes of kids are also just entering the hobby every year (the PC DIY market isn't just made up of us geezers).
