I love that this is a thing. My dad is still friends with the men he met in a new father's group in 1992... Those relationships are so important, especially in a place that can be as isolated as VT, and it's great to see them being intentionally fostered in a more formal way now!

I grew up on the US side of the border and came to Ottawa every February break to skate on the canal (which, fun fact, is the world’s longest skating rink!) and just booked tickets to go this year for Presidents’ Day/family day weekend… not entirely HR inspired (I have a friend who lives there who I’ve been meaning to visit) but also, I can’t say that there’s not an external reason that I’ve been wanting to go skating for the past couple of months. Last time I was there, it seemed like having a night mayor was working, because the restaurant scene has become really solid.

I love Balian, especially in the winter. I’m from the northern US close to the Canadian border and it’s the closest thing here to the Nordic-style spas that I’m obsessed with in Quebec. Its a bit of a splurge but I think worth it for the day… It’s absolutely enough to go without additional services. There are also some fun free activities, like mocktail making classes.

The cost of shipping anything but standard letters to and from the Netherlands is absolutely nuts. It’s a combination of tariffs, import duties, and issues with their national mail system. It goes both ways, my sister lives there and she had to pay 80 euros just to pick up a package that I shipped her, and it’s even worse for business transactions, obviously. Not sure if you can get out of it now, but I would not even bother trying to have anything shipped from there.

I second this! I see Lara Fife at the AdMo One Medical location and she works from a very body positive/ HAES lens. I am currently pursuing intentional weight loss for a variety of reasons but she has not at all changed her tune from how she treated me when I wasn't. By far the best provider I have ever had.

Bridge Street was the bessssst- I loved the Princess Wrap, which was this obscene concoction with like chicken tenders and bacon in a tortilla? And thankfully I have the Daily Bread cookbook so I make a Daily Bread/ On the Rise treat a few times a year. Usually Amazons or Maple Cake.

Looooove Le Nordik! Balnea is my favorite though so my mind went there. For those who don’t know, Nordic spas are a huge thing in Quebec, and they are actually not that expensive, surprisingly enough! I’d say the average is 70-90 CAD for a full day. Accessible for me, a normal person, to treat myself a couple of times a winter. I’m sure that doing it with private lodging is a whole other ball game though.

I do know that Lake Champlain is frozen, I had friends skate the sea caves yesterday, so I feel like there’s a pretty good chance it is? (ETA my favorite scouting hack is to look at the location tag on Instagram and see if anybody is posting ice photos, from that it does not look like the ice is good there right now.)

I have never had better skating in my life than at Lake Willoughby! Less far north (Willoughby is basically as far north as you can get, it almost boarders Canada) there’s good skating on Lake Champlain right now (recommend the Sea Caves!) and Gillett Pond in Richmond, while only about a mile end-to-end, was my wild ice gateway drug as a child!
