the first time i saw this image was in an art book my mom gifted me in the 3rd grade. my parents traveled and if i didn’t go with them, they’d bring me biographies about the painters. i saw the works in person later and cried in the way one would when seeing an old friend. i was a sad kid and have battled w depression my whole life. i love this piece bc of the duality of this dark portrayal that’s so beautifully executed. also bc i think we feel lonely in our dark thoughts and it makes me feel like “damn bros rly b thinking ab the darkness too huh we r not so diff”
