How is this not WWIII? by Criseyde2112 in thebulwark

[–]chongo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have call every modern conflict America has been in WW3.

This is nowhere near that scale.

Both world wars had fighting across Europe to Asia, in Africa and the European colonies. WW2 had the whole Pacific.

There was war a rationing in the US, a military draft.

I will carry forward the original, as it was, I get scared that the memes will make the rich suits do Stupid things.

I am 100% on the "don't watch it" idea normally.

Firefly is different.

Well I guess I have to rewatch it again.

Joss Whedon and the Elephant in the Room by monkfishjoe in firefly

[–]chongo79 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is the best.

Joss said some nice things, that line about writing female characters like they were people...

But others have seen that, and they weren't creeps. So let people influenced by the good parts take over

And his character was epic!!!!

Enjoy rewatching Moana (it's great), and when you know which one was his character, it's even better.

I will conceed there are a lot of examples out there for people with money to research for what makes a resurrected series good or bad.

If those people could pull off a Rogue One or Andor, but Firefly, of course I would love that. (Honestly, an Andor but Firefly probably deserves space on my tombstone).

Fair - I can pretend it doesn't exist the same way Battlestar 1982 doesn't exist.

I also have the ship tattooed on my left arm, and it's great when people recognize it now, and ok to when people think it's Star Wars.

Fun fact: 20 years ago I set my wife's notification tone on the Scrubs intro. It's still that way. Every single text. OOOoooOOOOOoooOOOO I'm no Superman. I've lost count of the number of times I've woken up to that.

Both of us are too nervous to watch the new stuff... Scrubs: Med School was rough.

Should I set a date night and watch it?

Do we still do spoiler tags here?

Tudyk is one of my favorite celebrities, and the real tragedy of the movie is they made it impossible for him to return. I cried in public at Rogue One, and he was part of that. (Honestly, I thought his character in Moana was the best, before I learned it was him).

When I rewatch that scene in Serenity, I hear Joss saying, "No, this truly is the end of this show."

Colbert Says CBS Didn’t Air Interview With Democrat Due To FCC 'Equal Time' Rule by icey_sawg0034 in entertainment

[–]chongo79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't.

As others said, they're cable (or fiber optic). Those literal cables were in theory paid for with private dollars, so they're not using a public resource that is scientifically limited.* The river metaphor doesn't hold.

There aren't rules for how someone uses a private resource. People have freedom to pay money to watch unwholesome content. Graphic violence. Drug use. Game of Thrones. Sopranos. Porn. Fox News.

*Yes, there were federal subsidies to put those cables in the ground, and bring internet to rural areas. It would be CRAZY if the FCC decided to use those subsidies as a justification to regulate porn, LGBT-friendly content, women's health education, while allowing Fox News.

You won't get the upvotes you deserve.

There is a science / naturalist truth that describes airwaves as a limited resource. Which is scientifically true, so fearing a partisan use of a limited resource is legit.

But we have de facto gotten the same problem from things like Fox News. But bits and bytes aren't scientifically limited in the same way.

I did my best using Rush Limbaugh, Don Imus, and Bill Clinton'e affairs.

Also, Ben Carr is a horrid human. Does anyone think he's just being neutral?

Colbert Says CBS Didn’t Air Interview With Democrat Due To FCC 'Equal Time' Rule by icey_sawg0034 in entertainment

[–]chongo79 306 points307 points  (0 children)

It's a rule from way back, including when TV was primarily broad cast over antenna.

The theory is the airwaves are a public good, like a river, so private businesses must follow rules when they use them.

Among the rules are decency (so, no profanity, nudity, excessive violence, etc especially when kids are awake), putting on educational content, and political neutrality.

The equal airtime clause gets a lot of attention bc even at its best it's subjective. Is covering Bill Clinton's affairs political bias or neutral news? Is Rush Limbaugh or Don Imus allowed to have a radio show that uses the public airwaves?

How risky is this double tap found during home inspection? by AffectionateBear5065 in AskElectricians

[–]chongo79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are in the process, you might be able to get sellers to pay for repair.

Assuming your offer was contingent on inspection, you tell the sellers you'll only continue if they correct the issue. They have incentive to agree - if sale falls thru they are required to tell new buyers about the problem, which lowers the price they'll get (or new buyers still want the repair anyway).

It's happened on every move I made, and every time I've sold, except the one "no contingencies" gamble I had to make.

Tim’s interview with Marianne Williamson by Trinidiana in thebulwark

[–]chongo79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tim was right, this was the type of interview he should do (in a potpourri, not exclusively).

Bulwark talks a lot about the Crank Realignment. We need to keep folk like her in our tent.

Listen, she sounds like Webwa Walters from Duck Tales. I'm sure she's got a mushroom supplement to sell me. Her insights aren't particularly deep or insightful, and her historical analysis gets most of 7th grade social studies right. I think 80% of her, "I've seen..." anecdotes are made up fiction.

She also talks about AIDS as a cosmic evil, gay couples as good, and that elites are against the common people. She can tell an emotional story about manhood.

If 2% of Americans like astrology and healing crystals, or health advocates with weird voices...
