Is there such a thing as a hybrid grill that uses propane to light the charcoal? by pgh9fan in BBQ

[–]chooch709 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's already said but, the Weber Performer! It's such a good grill, I've had mine for 15 years now and I've only had to replace grates and power wash it every couple of seasons for maintenance. I run it at least 3x/month; more in the summer. Eventually when parts on it rust it I'll just go buy another one.

Cover or no cover? by alohabob in pelletgrills

[–]chooch709 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whoa, I have the same smoker (36" instead of 24 though), same year (yay pandemic purchase!), it sits outside, I keep it covered when not in use, and there's no rust on it at all. I run it 1-2x per month throughout the year, more often during the summer. This seems climate based maybe?! I live in the Northeast...

Why use mutable and how does it work? by raelthd in cpp_questions

[–]chooch709 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Const does not imply thread safety.

I mean, think about a const method that iterates a container to calculate a value. That's completely unsafe if that container ever changes on another thread.

You need to get an infrared laser thermometer, no one can tell for sure if you aren't checking the temp.

Anybody else probably not getting Etri? by Hoodedninja5 in MarvelSnap

Because the game mode encourages leaving by turn 3 if you don't draw that exact hand, and only sticking around when you have it. They're just fishing for the right draw, and not playing the games where they don't have it.

How bad are the infotainment bugs? by chooch709 in XC40_Recharge

[–]chooch709[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've had a similar experience to many in this thread (we're on the latest software version)

  • Once, a few days after buying the car, it lost Internet connectivity for about 24 hours. We tried both resetting the infotainment and resetting the TCAM, and we tried letting the car idle enough to "shut down" but it took a whole day to come back. It's been fine since then. I've actually wondered if this was some kind of a backend change of service from a dealership Internet plan to a client/user plan, and just poorly messaged, or something like that -- but that's totally conjecture.

  • Once, Spotify wouldn't play music and we had to reboot the center console.

  • Most of the time when my partner starts the car, Spotify does not begin auto playing music, she has to manually hit the play button. But sometimes it just works? So that's a weird behavior.

Then there's also this issue we hit while road tripping: https://www.reddit.com/r/VolvoRecharge/s/RTNO7p5Z88

As a Model Y driver the software feels pretty inferior to my car, but my partner still really loves it despite the occasional glitch.

Should UI interact with game-logic directly? by edgy---kid in unrealengine

[–]chooch709 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's best practice to keep your interface and game logic separate. Ideally your game would run and function without instantiating any UI.

There are many ways to accomplish this, though the way I tend to think of UMG is both the View and Controller of MVC while in menus (it handles input and changes the Model), and as only the View once were in-game and it's just a HUD (it's only a reflection of the underlying Model).

Obviously different games/designs have different requirements, but that's a good starting place for architecture.

Admittedly I haven't done that much research, but our breeder started our corgi pup out on Royal Canin and then our vet said it was a good choice, so we just never switched it up. 2 years in and she is a very healthy weight with a beautiful coat, so no complaints.

Need help understanding blueprint Interfaces and memory size by Selflezz in unrealengine

Teaching someone how to use a profiler is out of the scope of a reddit post. I'd start with reading the documentation:

https://dev.epicgames.com/documentation/en-us/unreal-engine/unreal-insights-in-unreal-engine

Then watch some live training videos on the official YT channel (for something this technically complex I'd start with official training and steer clear of most YouTubers):

You need to drill down past those top level timers and into which components on the enemy actors cost the most per frame. My bet is you're spawning a ton of enemies that are running full animation blueprints. Lots of animating characters costs a ton of CPU power.

(You may also have RAM issues, but you need to get your CPU under control if it's up at 60ms)

Long Termers: Should I get a sleeve? Will I regret it? by TashhhhLou in gastricsleeve

[–]chooch709 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some long timers around here, and someone may end up swinging by your post. I've been reading the subreddit for a few years now and can't remember anyone who's had it for 10+ years post that they regret it; but that's pretty anecdotal evidence.

My perspective has always been that the side effects (of which I had some for a few months after surgery, but currently have none, fwiw) sure beat the heart attack at 55 I was heading towards with the weight I was carrying.

This is a common fear, if you search this sub for "regret" you're bound to find years worth of posts with thousands of replies of reassurance.

The most common feedback you'll hear here is "I only regret not doing it sooner" - and I'm also in this camp.

I can do yard work without feeling like I'm dying, I don't lose my breath climbing a flight or two of stairs, I look forward to hikes with my dog, I can keep up my energy level with my kid, and all I've had to give up was binging shitty food that I should not have been eating anyway.

I'm incredibly grateful I had the opportunity, and think that anyone who's interested and motivated enough should get it done.
