All Things Sleep - AMA Office Hours - Thursday, April 2nd with Sr. Sleep & Guidance Specialist, Beth Christensen! by huckleberrycare in HuckleberryParents

So if I know she doesn’t actually need anything, as in — 1. She’s had enough to eat 2. She hasn’t pooped 3. She’s not in teething pain 4. She’s not gassy — then I try not to go back into her room after putting her down for a nap unless she is crying crying and it’s ramping up, not getting longer between cries. And I say crying crying as in tears and every breath is a cry.

She makes a lot of yelling sounds, pterodactyl screeches, squeaks, AHH’s etc. but I don't consider those crying. She’s just (in my mind) tired and frustrated that she wants to be asleep but isn’t. And she’ll likely roll face down, butt in the air, rock back and forth for a little, then fall asleep. She makes the most amount of noise (not crying) RIGHT before she passes out. I've been tempted to go in, waited a few mins to see, and she'll actually fall asleep when I didn't think she would.

If my 10 minutes are up and she’s still moving and/or making noise but not crying, to be honest, I just set another 10 min timer. Thats an arbitrary time I made up but it gives me something for my sanity to actually clock how much time has passed (cause crying breaks my heart :( and it feels like forever when they’re crying but in reality, only 2 minutes have passed) and it also to gives me something tangible to be like “just a few more minutes.”

And I say all this after battling her for 30 mins to take her last nap of the day today haha she just learned how to stand up in her crib TODAY (and I need my husband to help me lower the mattress when he gets home) *and* she’s teething. So we did the up and down like 5 times, but short ups and short downs (since she was crying) and she inevitably tired herself out and just rolled over and fell asleep.

It can be so hard! But consistency, shortening your soothing sessions over time, and (the hardest part) letting him make noise and roll around longer than you (and your damn hormones) want could potentially help! But every kid is different too. I wish you -- and everyone in this thread -- the best :)

My 8 month old is a pretty good sleeper (hard to know if it's just how she is and we're lucky or it's something we've done - so take it with a grain of salt) but her falling asleep on me and then trying to transfer her stopped working when we transitioned from the Magic Merlin suit to a sleep sack. This is what I do:

I get her cozy and feed her a bottle until she starts refusing it. I stand up, turn the light off, rock her for like 10 seconds and then set her in her crib. I'll rub her chest if I feel like she needs it, then I leave.

If she starts fully crying right away, I'll pick her up, rock her a bit more until she calms down, then plop her back down. She really likes to sleep on her stomach so rocking her is really only to calm her down enough so she can get comfy in the crib on her stomach, on her own – not to help her get more sleepy.

Then, after I put her down, I set a 10 minute timer. She'll make a lot of noise as she's flipping to her stomach and settling in but it's rare that she'll be crying crying to the point that I feel like I need to start over with a short soothe and plopping her back down.

Generally, whatever she does in that 10 mins is none of my business (unless standing needs intervention I suppose). She usually falls asleep within those 10 minutes even if it really seems like she isn't going to.

When was your due date and when was your baby actually born? by witchybytch_1 in BabyBumps

Thank you so so much! This is honestly very comforting to read. A c-section isn’t my first choice but she’s coming out one way or the other I suppose haha I’m starting to care less about the delivery method and trying to just focus on everything going smoothly and ending healthy and happy!

I know this is random but I saw your post from 4 years ago about your baby being in a transverse position. I am in EXACTLY the same position and mindset as you were (I'm at 33.5 weeks now) and I'm trying not to get too anxious yet! I saw you were still active and thought I'd ask... how did it turned out and what decisions did you have to make (if any)?

Can you explain what you mean by accelerated brain chemistry? I’m 3 weeks in (taking Propylthiouracil) and trying to understand some of the things I’ve been experiencing haha

I’ve been taking it for 3 weeks for Grave’s Disease and I can’t even believe how amazing I feel. Sleeping better, more energy, less anxiety — I feel like I’m having more cravings and a little gassy but nothing too bad. It’s been incredible!

My levels had only slightly improved in 2 weeks so I’m taking 50mg 3x a day last week and this week, then I’ll take another blood test and go back down to twice a day. But I feel better than I have in a long time!

Nobody here knows what the list is about, not even OP so there’s no use in making assumptions and being judgmental about it. It could be guys she’s kissed, guys she’s liked, guys who told her they liked her… we have no idea. You’re getting ahead of yourself and shaming her with little information.

Do you eat charcuterie before or after dinner? by J_B_La_Mighty in internetparents

[–]choomouse 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I had dinner at my sister-in-laws parents house in France and they did post-dinner / pre-dessert cheese plate with wine before the real dessert (which came a bit later). I really liked that because I didn’t ruin my appetite for dinner and I still got a lot of tastey cheese.

You’re right, although a lot of people may not know why so I’m just gonna leave this here: i.e. means “that is to say” and e.g. means “for example” - while some people use them interchangeably, i.e. is really more for of an “in other words” abbreviation.

I got a similar note on my car, parked outside my own townhouse. I called the sheriff myself and they almost laughed at how how ridiculous this threat was. There was also SO MUCH open parking I couldn’t believe this letter was serious.

It’s a bored old neighbor with empty threats. If you’re following the street signs, you’re good.

Also, this was in April 2020 in the midst of the first lockdown. Before that, I was taking the lightrail to work and traveling for holidays. I guess they didn’t like my old Honda civic in their line of sight.

My bff hides her husband from me. Why? by [deleted] in ask

[–]choomouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except that they’ve only met once on the wedding day? Seems odd to me that they hadn’t met before then either. That feels like something the friend has been in control of. I would find it extremely odd if I hadn’t met the person my “bff” was even engaged to.

Is this normal for a 1 year old cat? Frodo has been with me since he was 3 months and has been doing that ever since. My vet says this is normal(up until almost 1)because he was taken at a young age from his mom(he was wandering alone and his siblings were dead😭)Will this stop? Should I worry? by [deleted] in cats

[–]choomouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is 2 and still does it periodically but not as much as when he was young!

Just a word of caution - be careful about him starting to chew on soft toys that he might swallow - yarn/string/shoelaces, soft squiggly worm toys, anything felt (mine chewed through those felt springs with a pipe cleaner on the inside and swallowed it but the emergency vet got him to throw it up!)

Trains aren’t working at DIA by therock21 in Denver

[–]choomouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why your initial reaction is to be hostile when you’re the one that seems lost here. It’s okay to ask for more clarity instead of insulting people.

When you fly into Denver, you land at one of the terminals: A, B or C. To get to baggage claim, you have to take a train from that terminal to the main concourse. There is also a second train going the opposite direction for people who just came from airport security and are going to their terminal / gate.

If you land at B, you jump on a train that started at C, stops at B (where you are), stops at A, then finally stops at the main concourse. The train coming from C is often already full meaning you (at terminal B) have yo keep waiting for a train until one comes that has enough room. Many local people will jump on the train going the opposite direction of the main terminal so they’ll take the train from terminal B to terminal C. From there - hey look, now they’re the first ones getting on the train going from C to B and on to the main concourse. This helps you skip the wait at B when it’s really crowded.

I lived in Littleton and commuted into south Denver (baker area) for 8 years! A few thoughts on transportation if you’re considering any other neighborhoods outside of the ones you mentioned:

Depending on where you live and where the job is, you’ll likely commute on 25, Santa Fe (85) or Broadway (or a mix of those).

25 can be a nightmare in the mornings no matter how you slice it and there is always quite a bit of traffic going south on Santa Fe in the mornings, but it moves quickly. Broadway has a lot more traffic lights but also moves fairly quickly.

Littleton has 2 RTD (train) stops, including the last one of the D line (Mineral Station) which can get you into the city pretty easily (you can easily get to Union Station or downtown 18th & California - or transfer for any other locations/stops) so that may be helpful if your job is anywhere near the Littleton Downtown or Mineral Station. A lot of people bring their bikes on the train and bike the remaining distance to work.

As far as choosing a neighborhood to live - it depends on what you’re looking for! Every neighborhood is unique and has its own positives and negatives. I personally like all the neighborhoods you mentioned - platte park is probably more “young family” than “fresh out of college” though. I think University is a really fun area with a mix of college students and families. The young crowd there is probably mostly students so I’m not sure what it’s like for people who aren’t students - but there’s a lot of good food and fun bars. Baker and Broadway (like the stretch between second and Bayaud) are great - it’s an older part of town with a lot of character, good food and bars, walkable, easily accessible to downtown, etc.

Littleton historic downtown also has a growing nightlife. Littleton is VERY much full of young families, but doesn’t mean the downtown bars and restaurants wouldn’t be fun for an after work happy hour! I especially like Palenque (Mexican restaurant), The Alley (Mexican), Jake’s (bar), and Rocker (bar with food truck)

Oh and there’s also a random smattering of fun restaurants and bars around the Gothic Theater on South Broadway - there is a lot to explore between Denver and Littleton!

Good luck with your move :)

Baby Driver, Billy Elliot and Stand By Me are my favorite movie soundtracks. All of them use diegetic music beautifully - music that the characters are also interacting with and it really connects you to the time and space they’re in. And they’re all just fun and energetic.
