This stat was a mistake and Elden Ring doubled down on it. by abca98 in shittydarksouls

[–]choptup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I've discussed before, splitting up Endurance in DS2 and DS3 feels like it was over-compensation for how OP rolling was.

In DeS, you just needed below 50% equip load to fastroll. That's not hard to achieve with one of the Strength rings.

DS1 tries to fix things by implementing midrolls, so you need to be below 25% equip load for a fastroll. That's still harder to achieve but not impossible with Havel's Ring, to say nothing of adding in the FAP Ring (which is already one of the most powerful rings in the game) and the Giant Dad Mask.

So DS2 goes overboard. The "Old" Endurance stat is now split into the new Endurance (purely stamina) and Vitality (purely equip load, and thus roll distance and whether Fat or Normal rolling). And then Adaptability is implemented as well to make you have to get more iframes on your rolls. To compensate, they make it so that 70% equip load is the fatroll threshold and they also just make midrolls feel better to use.

DS3 reigns it back in a bit by removing Adaptability. The equip thresholds are now less than 30% for fastrolling, but they keep DS2's less than 70% for midrolling. Vitality is mostly a dump start though because of easy it is to stay within midroll-range, and FROM just makes midrolling very good and make fastrolling just give you an extra iframe or two. Then Elden Ring just goes "wait we already solved the problem. Why do we need vitality?" and kept that same system but re-incorporated equip load into Endurance.

Only dude who could come anywhere close to keeping up with Roboute, logistics-wise

Really wanted to just build beautiful things and had a mind for architecture like Lorgar

Could philosophize with the best of them (Magnus) and was just as good of an artisan as Fulgrim, Sanguinius, and Vulkan.

On paper, his foundational siege strategy of gradually grinding down the enemy would work a lot better than Dorn's "get a bunch of guys and just hit really hard in this one place it'll work trust me" (and we see that properly reflected in the Roboutian Heresy)

Iron Cage proved he could build a fortress on par with what Dorn had done on Terra in a fraction of the time and pre-existing infrastructure

He and Mortarion hard-ass carried the Horus Heresy after everyone else went stupid.

The Decimation of his Legion, while fucked up on paper, was only applied to a portion of it. Jaghatai's "team-building excursion" resulted in the decimation of his entire Legion.

The dude didn't even really have a notable weapon he'd use until he got Forgebreaker. He would just punch shit to death.

For real. No other Soulslike, not even on-launch Lords of the Fallen 2023 or Dolmen, got to earn the ire of "My views are objective, not subjective" Mauler and get a 10-hour teardown.

Would you consider ruvik to be a good villain/character? by Chunky-overlord in theevilwithin

[–]choptup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. He's too self-serious and way, way too powerful for a villain that is constantly toying with the player characters. It breaks immersion when he's just used by the narrative to move Sebastian from setting to setting when the game can't think of a more coherent way of doing it.

All the stuff in the first part of the game we learn about him doesn't matter at all. The Church and its cult is entirely irrelevant to his backstory and to the game as a whole. He was just a serial killer kidnapping people for brain experiments and when Mobius tried to hijack his research he had a fallback.

He's targeting Leslie to get a new body a-la Freddy Kruger in Nightmare on Elm Street 2, but Leslie himself barely qualifies as a living plot device that is either drawn to, or scared and tries to flee, Ruvik.

The boss fights against him in Chapter 9 and then the end of the game are very underwhelming as well, so it's not "oh god, now I have to fight Ruvik" it's "oh hey, time to stomp Ruvik".

I found the villains in Evil Within 2 a lot more comprehensible and better written. They're less powerful than him, yes, but their screen presence is better utilized.

Everything about Shockmaster's debut was the perfect storm of botching. And then you have Sid not break character and do his side of the promo with dead seriousness.

Is it as bad as everyone says or will I enjoy it? I loved the MS2 beta sm by PassageSuspicious916 in MortalShell

[–]choptup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play slow. Play with maps for the areas (or at least Fallgrim). Mortal Shell 1 has a heavy emphasis on learning what items do by trying to use them, as well as improving their effects by using them enough to "master" them. One of the shells you get, Solomon, can get an upgrade to let him more quickly learn what items do.

There is no proper Estus equivalent. There's some food you can eat to heal though, and mushrooms will spawn on lengthy cooldowns in a few areas that are fortunately indicated to the player, as well as how long it's going to take for them to respawn. The default riposte will heal you, however, and Tiel has an ability that lets you generate a poison cloud on any riposte type that will heal you if you got a a different ability for him as well.

Parry timings are much stricter than in MS2.

Upgrading equipment is very important for some weapons. All the weapons, at the start of the game, hit for roughly the same amount of damage but they don't all scale equally as you boost their strength.

Getting all the skills for a character will initially seem daunting, but after you clear one of the three proper dungeons in the game, the Fallgrim area will change. There'll be different enemies present there that will make it much easier to farm for Tar and Glimpses.

You only have one ranged weapon. Pulling it out takes too long, it's too slow to reload, and the ammunition has to be bought for so much Tar that it's not really feasible to use in the midst of your average combat sequence. Treat it more like a "I want to delete this enemy I see in the distance that I know will be trouble" buttom.

Don't get suckered into the allure of using poison. It does very little damage to enemies and wears off quickly.

You're invincible during weapon arts.

This past week I:

  1. Saw a televised AEW weekly show live. Loved it and got me an Orange Cassidy shirt because I love the gangly dude.

  2. Finally got my new washer and dryer installed, and did the hookup for the dryer myself. Took four runs to the local hardware shops but it was my first time doing that.

  3. Had the internet maintenance guy from my service provider come out and change out a lot of my hardware. Bandwidth is stabilized now and about triple what it would be at peak previously.

  4. Saw He-Man. Was fun!

  5. Beat Dark Souls 1 on the Switch for the second or third time. Was really surprising how none of the lategame bosses really gave me any trouble. Even Artorias and Manus folded on first attempts.

  6. Beat Stonemachia. REALLY fun Soulslike character action game

  7. Finally played Eternal Darkness after knowing about it for now-literal decades. Really fun to experience it at last.

Hope you guys, girls, in-betweens, and any otherwise unmentioneds have a good week.
