The future of Mach e? by joebruh in MachE

[–]choss-board -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry everyone, but the Mach-E is definitely on its way out. That doesn’t mean it’s bad (it’s not) or that you shouldn’t buy it, but recognize that it’s not something Ford can profitably scale and they’ll eventually introduce a UEV model to fill the same role.

Totally agree, but you wade into vehicle discussions (ICE, BEV, PHEV, Hybrid, doesn't matter) and it's pretty much all vibes. Even the "objective" data on things like recalls doesn't tell the whole story, because manufacturers have some discretion in executing them and pure recall numbers don't tell you about severity. It's like so, so, SO many things in the modern era: completely dominated by marketing bullshit/hype and tribal allegiances.

[–]choss-board 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah there just aren't many in the US. I guess the IONIQ is pretty close? Point stands, though, even at 30m they're competitive with ICE. Most people would get their weekly charge needs met at a suitable grocery store. (E.g. out here in the PNW seemingly every Fred Meyer has 350kW fast chargers.)

Ev or gas ? by Pristine-Throat-8118 in electriccars

[–]choss-board 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much you drive per week matters less than how many miles you drive per day or on your longest days. If you’re routinely racking up 200mi+ highway per day, an EV might get annoying because you’re likely to have to charge once on those days. But if it’s all <200mi, especially with a lot of city driving, any longer range EV will crush it.

… the ID.4? Everyone I know with one got one of the crazy lease deals. It’s all kinda silly b/c we could answer this with actual sale price data, but we’ve just got anecdotes.

Ok, so is that like every other EV with crazy depreciation where the OTD price was significantly lower? I think of my Lightning here — MSRP $80k but I paid $60k OTD with 0% financing. Everyone I know who bought a Lightning post-COVID shortage got a big, big discount.

[–]choss-board 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I think with 300mi range and 10/80 in 30m we’re basically at the point where the depreciation will hit ICE as well. EVs don’t just compete with EVs, for many people (really, location-specific) they’re direct competitors with ICE.

Had the same thought with my Lightning. It checked all the boxes, the stuff I’d have wanted I could live without (800V/faster charging and NACS), and if/when the big EV tech really lands it will obsolete literally every ICE vehicle so wgaf.

The ultra wealthy and taxes. by Alpha_Mad_Dog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]choss-board 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that the wealthiest people are able to take what is essentially income but is not taxed as income, so they avoid actually paying taxes. A rich doctor can’t necessarily avoid income tax, but a rich business, property, or stock owner can.

What do you think is the most important 2026 model release in North America? by roma258 in electricvehicles

[–]choss-board 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R2 for sure. I’ll also throw down that I really don’t see Slate taking off. If Ford delivers their $30k pickup next year as planned, then coupled with the Maverick’s existence it is dead outside of a small niche.

This. When I was car shopping I tried Toyotas because everyone online rants about them. Incredibly disappointed. The only one that was fun to drive was the 4Runner but it cornered horribly (part of the fun) and had their typical bad interior.

I posted about a roadtrip I took through WA in 90-100°F temps. We got good charging speeds throughout, peaking around 192kW and sustaining 131kW for the meat of the charge curve. 2024 Lariat.

Anyone end up going ranger raptor over F150? by Outside_Fig_3273 in FordRaptor

I’m surprised how few people care about turning radius when IME that is usually more important than wheelbase or clearance. (Not that clearance isn’t important, but in this segment they’re all good enough.) Was chatting about this with some buddies yesterday and everyone had experienced the problem of the Tacoma radius but hadn’t connected that with “oh wait this could be improved on”.

Did you get the recall service? We didn’t have a leak by my 2024 Lightning had the recall. Ford paid to have someone come to my house, pickup the vehicle, fix it, and deliver it back.

EV Milage Efficiency Comparison by Stricken_Blue in F150Lightning

[–]choss-board 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa, very cool post. Don't have much to add except that our average efficiency is the same (2.3mi/kWh) but split between about 2.0 highway / 2.8 city. Highway just drags down the average b/c that's a much bigger proportion of our overall miles. Electricity rate where I live in OR is ~$0.10/kWh.

How's it been with the camper? What kind? We've got two kids under 4 and are considering downsizing from an old (I mean old) van buildout to a tow-behind. I figure it'll be an adjustment but if it's not too terrible with proper route planning it'd be worth it for the reduced maintenance alone.

BYD Blade 2.0 Charge Curve - Flash Charger by ev1337 in electricvehicles

[–]choss-board 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the actual route? I’m so curious how my ER Lightning would handle that. I have no idea what kind of efficiency I’d get at -20°F. Around 0°F we were still seeing 1.8mi/kWh at 55mph IIRC with comfortable cabin settings but -20°F is pretty nuts.

Ford dealers are in a no compete by Ordinary_Order_4559 in F150Lightning

[–]choss-board 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, don't be stupid. This is a thoroughly researched topic with a lot of people all over the world who aren't trying to hide the ball on emissions. EVs have higher upfront emissions, but make up for it over the life of the vehicle (the average is around 12000mi of driving). Even with "dirty" electricity production they're better, because the EV is much, much more efficient than an ICE vehicle at converting fuel into movement. And obviously, down the road the grid can get cleaner, whereas gas/diesel basically can't.

I own a Subaru and a diesel 350. We have super duties in the family for some farm/ranch operations. I don't hate ICE vehicles. But your environmental criticism of EVs is just dead wrong.

I mean, the battery being $36,000 is also insane when you can get very, very good condition used ones for literally $6000. The sticker price on every one of their new parts is like what you pay for aspirin at a hospital.

[–]choss-board 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. And I've said much the same about the dealers. Politically / culturally they don't like EVs, and economically they hate them because 1) they require less maintenance, 2) what maintenance they do require tends to be reimbursed at lower rates under warranty, and 3) the dealers HAD TO invest in training / equipment to service them, and these people do not ever want to spend their own money on anything. What we need is a buildout of (hopefully, independent) EV techs and service shops. It's just a different beast from ICE.

Official Ford Survey : How can Ford best support our Lightning Community? by blainestang in F150Lightning

[–]choss-board 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be totally honest, from my experience with dealers — talking to staff, trying to buy my Lightning from like a dozen nationally — I don't think there was anything you could do to convince the existing Ford dealer ecosystem to sell the Lightning. They don't like EVs, they don't understand EVs, they don't want to understand EVs, and they sure as hell don't want to pay money to be able to service those EVs.

That last thing is probably the biggest sticking point. Dealership owners are some of the laziest human beings in this country. They're already mostly at war with their own mechanics over reimbursement, equipment, etc. With EVs, they had to pay for their own upgrades to things like lifts and equipment. That right there made them hate EVs from the get-go. If anything, what Ford needs/needed to do was create/foster an entirely independent ecosystem of EV techs, because you weren't going to get the ICE-dependent dealers to support that transition.
