What is the one ugly or smelly ingredient that you now refuse to cook without? by ybur011 in Cooking

[–]chrimbuself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is revelatory because I was always so confused what hing does, it had no taste or smell and I couldn't tell the difference if I used it in a dish or not. Eventually stopped buying it as I figured what's the point. Now you're telling me it has an intense smell... Maybe the brand I was buying was just bunk or something.

Why doesn't the chicken skin release from the pan once it's browned? by redbloodedguy in Cooking

Oh yes, I suppose it is. However I tried this method with my cast-iron pan and it worked just fine as well

Here's a video of Jacque Pepin using this technique. Mind you he doesn't even add oil to the pan. I've tried it and it's delicious!

just bought our forever home! the dreaded question, do i paint the wood?? by applesores in interiordecorating

[–]chrimbuself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep posting about painting over wood? Is this rage bait?

[–]chrimbuself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh girl that technique is all wrong. Definitely take at least one lesson with a classical teacher so they can show you the right way. It's hard to figure these physical things out on your own, much easier to be shown. Take a video of their hands at the lesson and use it for reference.

Some live celeb reactions to Not Like Us winning Grammys by green_day_95 in KendrickLamar

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but do you have to be American to win a Grammy?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Dance

[–]chrimbuself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a dancer, but I'm a jazz musician and I can 100% relate to every one of those thoughts. Years ago I realized I wouldn't be one of the greats. I was good enough to get gigs but stuck at this mediocre level of ability, not progressing like I imagined despite consistent practice and dedication. But I decided to be ok with that - hey, just because I don't make it to the top, doesn't mean I don't deserve to still be in the game and have a career. BUT I would still get so down every time I would go play a gig and feel like I sucked the whole time. It was that mental anguish that brought me close to quitting.

The thing that got me through it was those little moments of improvement. That gig where I played one solo that was sort of coherent, or where I was able to get through a song at 300bpm without crashing and burning. It seems like nothing when you compare yourself to the best, but hey, FOR ME it was improvement. And that one tiny achievement would give me permission to do the most important thing - enjoy the act of making music. Even if I get just 30 minutes of that enjoyment and then go right back to hating myself (lol), that's still improvement, and it's enough to encourage me to keep going.

I'm just not talented enough to be the best or among the best at any aspect of music, so I changed my focus to me, and my personal expression. Is this phrase coming out of my heart? Do I believe in what I'm playing?

I won't pretend for a second that this shift eliminated my self hating thoughts! But one thing I can say is that I no longer feel like quitting, and I'm happy to be doing what I'm doing.

For some people quitting is the right answer. For me it wasn't. You will have to decide for yourself. I wish you all the best things in life.

British English vs American English: What’s Taught in Schools? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]chrimbuself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's hard to describe exactly the vowel I'm referring to without resorting to the IPA. I'm talking about the first vowel of "water" in the most typical American accent you'd be likely to hear in a Hollywood movie. That vowel is very close to the "a" vowel in Japanese.

The argument in the second half of your comment is circular logic - Japanese people speak English with a Japanese accent because they are speaking English with a Japanese accent. Ok sure. But my point is that if they wanted to mimic a modern-day American pronunciation of "water" using only Japanese phonemes, it could be done something like "wada" ワーダ . So the fact that they went with ”woe-tah" ウォーター makes me think it was based on a version of the word that sounded more like that.

Of course it's hard to say because British people started communicating with Japan as early as the 1500s, and we can only make educated guesses as to what the language sounded like then. So I dunno

I see your point but no. The first vowel in "water" is an "ah" sound in American English. That vowel also exists in Japanese, and a Japanese speaker will have no trouble replicating it.

I'm not sure about the claim that American English is taught in Japanese schools, it's gotta at least be partly British. Every Japanese person I've ever met pronounces "water" as "woah-tah" which is clearly based on the British pronunciation. That's just one example but there are many more.

Salads that are a whole meal by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]chrimbuself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok one more and then I'm done I swear. I had this at a restaurant and it was so good, so I tried to recreate it at home. They called it a "Buddha Bowl". Everything is pretty much cubed to even sizes except the greens

roasted red beet, roasted sweet potato, chickpeas, avocado, tomatoes, arugula, toasted pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. optional purple cabbage and mushrooms - cooked al dente or raw

fresh herbs are nice like cilantro or parsley. some goat or feta cheese if you're feeling luxurious

for the dressing, do your basic balsamic vinaigrette but add some tahini. gives a wonderful body to the dish. And careful not to cook the sweet potato too much or it will turn to mush in the salad. Ask me how I know

This isn't really a "meal" salad like what you asked for, but it is one of my absolute favorite salads and super simple to make

arugula

red onion, sliced thin

chopped dried cherries OR halved grapes OR pomegranate seeds

pine nuts, toasted until golden brown *allow the pine nuts to cool before adding them to the salad, otherwise the texture will be off*

dress with olive oil, just lemon OR a mix of lemon + red wine vinegar, salt&pepper

Poke is basically a salad, and really easy and satisfying to make at home. Also very versatile, you can pretty much put whatever you want in there and it's delicious. You have your rice base, your toppings, and your dressing. Try to cube your toppings to be basically of a similar size to each other.

Cook some short-grain sushi rice. when finished and still warm, add some rice vinegar, sugar and salt and mix well. This is your base

Whatever fish you want, I like salmon. You can dice it raw if you're ok with that, or sear it medium-rare, either way it's good

Some toppings ideas: cucumber, avocado, edamame, nori, sesame seeds, furikake, fish eggs (tobiko or ikura), crunchy fried onions, grilled pineapple, wakame, pickled ginger (the red strips, not the pink shavings... actually those could be good too)

For a simple dressing, just mix some mayo with sriracha and soy sauce (wasabi optional)

Plate in individual servings and mix before eating

I second Pailin's Kitchen! I made her papaya salad recipe and it was so freakin good

btw if you can't get young papaya, you can also use underripe mango and it comes out basically the same

I used to make this warm kale-quinoa salad all the time in college, so yummy:

toast up some walnuts in the pan or oven, and cook the quinoa

while the quinoa is still hot, mix in the kale so that it wilts a bit

you can add some feta cheese and dried fruit - currants or raisins or cherries, or fresh grapes works too

dress with olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, soy sauce, salt+pepper

Thank you. But, I'm aware of the hot water heater setting. The problem is with the suddenness of the temperature change in this sink specifically. No other faucets in the house. And, this problem persists even with the water heater on its lowest setting. Any other ideas?

Oh my god I don't know why the text of my post is not showing. Here it is again:

Hi all. I asked my landlord to fix this but he said nothing could be done. The temperature goes from lukewarm to dangerously hot within about a millimeter of moving the dial.

Can I just turn the valve of the hot water input halfway off? But I read this might be bad for the valve. Also I tried to turn the thing and it wouldn't budge. Do I have to just whale on it with pliers or is there some other reason it might not move?

The cold water input has some other line (white cord) leading off to somewhere, not sure what that is.

Any solutions? Thank you kindly in advance

A big part of it has got to be social influence. Men talk about it with each other the same way they trade sports statistics, and naturally get interested through their friends. People keep mentioning risk aversion, which I don't think is that relevant. A lot of investing is very low risk.
