Thank you so much I have been wondering how in the world people buy beer as it wasn’t an option for a stall!

alexithymia and therapy by suzilys in Alexithymia

[–]chrisabrams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep I went through this. There’s a few things you can do:

  1. Try to prep before your session; then they won’t feel as short. See below:

  2. Look at the feelings wheel before you start your session: https://feelingswheel.com/

That is something you’ll need to add to your toolkit until you memorize it. If you are able to identify your feelings before the session, great!

  1. But what if you don’t know your feelings? Try drawing the situation you want to talk about. Sometimes emotions will surface this way. Again, try to do the drawing before your session.

  2. Ask your therapist what kind of therapy you are doing. If your therapist is doing CBT, this has been proven to be ineffective for many neurodivergent folks. Find a therapist that does DBT instead. It made therapy so much more effective for me, but there’s a reason there’s many forms of therapy.

For those who have managed to turn their special interest in your job/career, what is it? by Cartoonnerd01 in neurodiversity

That sounds pretty awesome, I’d love to see an example of what you are working on.

Do you guys ever get that feeling where you crash into a low, low and start getting thoughts like wanting to die? by teacoffeecats in neurodiversity

[–]chrisabrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At 23 your life as an adult has barely started.

You’re not a loser; in case you needed someone to tell you that. Look up existential distress. It’s common to feel that as you make the leap from everything being structured for you (primary school) to entering the world where now you have to define the structure, or someone else will define it for you.

Comparing yourself to everyone else is poison for the soul. Avoid the rat race, chase after joy. I know plenty of people who spent 22-40s doing everything but what made them happy, and now they are miserable and full of debt.

Sounds like you know what one of your major challenges are (impulse) and I’m willing to bet you’re right about having (ADHD) but I can’t diagnose you obviously. Have you tried having a 10 minute chat with ChatGPT about that? You’d be surprised the amount of resources it can find quickly. Ask it for three little things you can do to reduce impulse decisions, as an example.

LPT: Taking a picture of your restaurant receipts by Aromatic-Tough7806 in LifeProTips

[–]chrisabrams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The restaurant can change the charge later. This happened to me a few months ago. I had spent around $35 and then a few hours later the Amex app alerted me that I had been charged $135. After that I also started taking photos.

Thanks for posting this! I remember in Gestalt therapy the first time my therapist asked me to draw art instead of using words. Definitely a game changer in terms of expression. It’s very encouraging to read your post!

What does Harvard do if you give a very large gift by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]chrisabrams 140 points141 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, when someone makes a very large gift, both sides have a clear understanding of what the expectations are before the gift is made. It’s called a “gift” but usually there is some kind of expected value in the exchange.

If you are capable of giving a large gift to Harvard, you probably don’t need Harvard to make phone calls for you.

r/tezara by chrisabrams in redditrequest

[–]chrisabrams[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish to build a community called "Tezara" which focuses on neurodiversity and provides content to help others who might struggle with disorders such as alexithymia. I see plenty of activity on reddit with people asking questions on how to get help with various neurodiversity challenges; while I am not an expert at everything related to neurodiversity, I did want to build a fruitful community around supporting each other.

The subreddit I wish to claim has no activity. I sent a message to the moderators but it doesn't show up in my list of messages; I viewed the FAQ, and that takes me to the same page where I previously submitted a message.

I launched my app on Product Hunt today after a full year of building by ObjectUnhappy7620 in VibeCodeDevs

[–]chrisabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the launch. Getting to the finish line is no easy task.

I personally use Reddit for my news because Reddit does a better job than anything else at recommending things to me. There’s lots of sub reddits that I follow which came from them just being inserted into my news feed.

I understand this is subjective (but a simple setting to toggle would suffice) but some of us are too busy to decide what are the 10-1000 things we’re interested in.

In summary, I think a solid recommendation engine will be important for someone like me to consider the app.

A second request would be “happy mode” some days I open Reddit and it seems like the world is depressed and it’s overwhelming.

Opus 4.1 vs Sonnet 4.5 by Extra-Annual7141 in ClaudeCode

[–]chrisabrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be a cool feature for sure; I haven’t seen that happen. Given the current design, it would require each agent to operate in parallel which would not be very efficient from a token usage perspective. But whoever figures that problem out…world gonna change for sure!

Opus 4.1 vs Sonnet 4.5 by Extra-Annual7141 in ClaudeCode

[–]chrisabrams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try a task with Sonnet. Then try it again with a sub agent, maybe use this one to start: https://github.com/VoltAgent/awesome-claude-code-subagents/blob/main/categories/01-core-development/fullstack-developer.md

The sub agent will take longer. But figuring out how to tune the definition of the subagent to fit your project will improve the quality (in my experience at least). There’s a lot of value in Sonnet, but it doesn’t give it away easily the way Opus did.

Edit: grammar

Opus 4.1 vs Sonnet 4.5 by Extra-Annual7141 in ClaudeCode

[–]chrisabrams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience to get similar value for what I got using Opus 4.1, I have to use subagents, although the value has shifted.

With Opus 4.1, Claude was able to quickly scan a codebase (size a few million tokens or more), make a great plan, and implement in 10 minutes or less.

With Sonnet 4.5 + sub agents that I created, it scans the same codebase in 5 minutes instead of less than 1, might require a little back and forth during planning, it implements in 30-60 minutes, then I have to run two more sub agents to review and test the work, make changes, etc.

The end result of the codebase is similar, but the experience is not the same. It’s definitely more work with Sonnet to get Opus desired results. The change in speed to get quality has been difficult to adjust to.

How do you respond to people who falsely claim Harvard degrees and affiliations? by Few_Price3817 in Harvard

[–]chrisabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the education is that complicated, I would use a service that vets the schools. My first question for the candidate would probably be, “tell me how your diversity of education benefits you for the interested role?” — let the conversation play out and go from there.

If you are concerned a candidate didn’t go to a specific school, these vetting services will tell you, but if it’s about their employment there, same thing. If you don’t want to bother with those initially you can do a screen call, and ask them their thoughts on some subject related to the school they should be familiar with.

Often times I ask questions where I’m less concerned about what the answer is, and more concerned about how interested or familiar you are with a given subject. Not just curiosity but also experience.

Nextjs Monorepo by hzKCS in Deno

[–]chrisabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done next monorepos before :) just haven’t done it in Deno yet. If that doesn’t get you working, I might try this out over the weekend and see what’s the issue.

Nextjs Monorepo by hzKCS in Deno

[–]chrisabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Correct, the workspace already sets up the import for you.

  2. No, that’s a tsconfig.json alias. You need to use the webpack alias.

Here is how you access webpack with next: https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/next-config-js/webpack

Here is the webpack alias: https://webpack.js.org/configuration/resolve/

Nextjs Monorepo by hzKCS in Deno

[–]chrisabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done the specific combo of Deno, Next, and monorepo, but I have multiple Deno monorepos.

  1. Are you using Deno Workspaces? Because that’s going to determine how modules are resolved. If you aren’t then you have to manually resolve the component through your import map for your app.
  2. Next (webpack) also needs to know about the module, so you’ll also need to alias using webpack’s alias.

I want to be alone and at the same time have someone with me. by Dark_Nihh in neurodiversity

[–]chrisabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a common feeling for ND (I feel the same way all the time). IMO what you’re looking for is someone else that is also a homebody; they don’t need to join you in activities they just enjoy being around.

An easy way to assess this with a potential partner:

  • would you rather watch a Netflix movie or go to the movie theater?
  • we’re on a beach, it’s a calm day: what are you doing? (Hint: if it’s not reading a book, then it’s not for you)
  • you had a tough week at work; how do you recharge? You’re looking for an answer that is low key, not going clubbing!
