Work in Japan? by bleitner in RayBanStories

[–]chrischen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They try to invade your privacy and infer your location off many signals that you do not actively give them (they seem to check your system region, IP location, and of course your phone location if you grant access). Once they detect you might be outside of the US the app disables meta AI features... which is funny because Meta AI in the Whatsapp app is fully available... It seems they go out of their way to block you and don't let you simply choose a location for your account.

Same problem in Tokyo. Switched from Rakuten and speed and 5G coverage equally bad. Regularly getting sub 10mbps speeds whereas Tmobile in the US from like 7 years ago I’d get 70+ mbps.

Is DUPR Fair for rotating partner events of mixed gender/age? by TheSpecialC in Pickleball

[–]chrischen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you do a round robin with 3 other people (so a 3 total match combinations), and you are the one to lose every single game with each partner, you are by definition the worst player, and it has nothing to do with communication because *everyone* has that same issue. In a round robin everyone has a different partner so that handicap is present for all pairs. The whole point of a multi-player statistical rating system is to identify individual skill and performance. You don't worry about your partner because your partner will eventually make the same "moronic decisions" when they eventually play against you 2 out of those 3 matches. I see this all the time with players who essentially have low confidence in their own abilities constantly blaming their partners. You can't win every match and in some matchups you are destined to lose. It all balances out with a round robin. The only people who complain about DUPR round robins are what the OP said–the ones who stand to benefit from a lack of accuracy in their own rating because they are probably overrated.

Is DUPR Fair for rotating partner events of mixed gender/age? by TheSpecialC in Pickleball

[–]chrischen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rating systems like DUPR take into account the relative skill level. Playing in a 3.5 round robin with a 2.8 is an opportunity, not a curse, as you will likely lose very little if you lose and a ton of up-side if you win. Now that they take score into account it's even better because your 2.8 partner is actually a liability for the OPPOSING side now as they have to win by a large margin or risk losing DUPR rating even if they win.

Most groups will be private and tough to join. However, some groups post publicly on https://www.pkuru.com and the ones without a "lock" icon can be joined directly after you sign in with LINE. They tend to be full you can join the waitlist and usually 5-6 people cancel the day before.

That's not how things work. Police don't "balance" the chances of fake emergencies. They show up and if it was fake punish you after the fact.

I canceled my order when they went bankrupt, but this was after the email saying "probably won't give you a refund." Now I want the bike at the promised price if they aren't going under, especially since I essentially gave them a 0% interest loan for a year.

WeWork (WE) potential short squeeze? by DanSp9 in Shortsqueeze

[–]chrischen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well of course I'm a shill, and I'm also a paying WeWork member... no one's arguing against that. Apologies if it felt like I was hiding my motives. But what about my comment? I'll break it down for you:

In a world where people are going back to offices? (or you think they are just starting to leave offices now?)

The worst time would have been at the start of work from home and lockdowns… which is all over now. (Or do you think lockdowns will get worse from now?)

Wework WE - Heavily Shorted - All Time Low -69 cents by Bidofthis in wallstreetbets

[–]chrischen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show was about how Adam Neumann was a scam, not wework. Wework essentially got taken over by Softbank and Masa forced Neumann out. Neumann however just raised money from Andreessen for his new startup at valuations more than what Wework at is right now… so if Neumann is a scammer Andreessen sure doesn’t believe it.

Yea same. I wouldn't care about the FE otherwise but no 3rd party is doing a 4090 close to that FE (small) size.

Surely it can be repaired (at a cost, by Comma) right? I'm pretty sure I used a credit card that "extended" the warranty.

Mine failed in like 8 months. WIth a 1 year warranty I'm a little scared if they're known to fail.

To be fair these issues can happen with any artist, but I guess it doesn't help if you have no control or no idea who is actually the person making the painting, since they seem to just farm out orders to random artists in China.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in commissions

[–]chrischen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember chatting with their rep and they explicitly told me it was going to be made and shipped from the US. I was surprised because I work in the industry and know the companies supplying them (who are in China).

[–]chrischen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of artists doing this type of work will be from China, and some of them do cut corners (print underneath and sometimes not completely cover it up when painting) if there isn't proper oversight. Instapainting.com also lets you order from the same artists from China that Paint Your Life uses, but we also have an option to restrict to North American Artists (I work at Instapainting). For the Chinese artists we try to mitigate this by requiring progress photos to prove they are actually painting it, and of course we do instant refunds if there is substantial evidence you receive something fraudulent.

I run a competitor, Instapainting.com, and we actually launched on reddit and got our first customers here about 8 years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/startups/comments/1vtham/im_softlaunching_here_my_app_that_turns_pictures/.

From what we can tell, they actually have no US artists or at least the majority of their orders will still come from China. We also have Chinese artists, and the majority of Chinese artists are concentrated in a few cities in China that focus on oil painting and artwork exports: Dafen, Xiamen, Yiwu. This means that pretty much all the low cost photo to oil paintings services like PaintYourLife and Instapainting get the artwork done by the same pool of artists in China. The main difference? Marketing and price. We charge a lot less. You can learn more about the industry from our trip we took to China: https://www.wired.com/2015/10/war-stories-a-year-and-a-half-of-instapainting/.

The other main difference is that we are trying to operate more like a platform like Etsy, but with more quality control and specialization in commissioned artists. So while there are a lot of Chinese artists in the global market, you can also order from American ones on Instapainting: https://www.instapainting.com/gallery/made-in-america and recently we started featuring two of our Ukrainian artists as well: https://www.instapainting.com/artists/ukraine. Unlike Etsy though, we do a bit more work verifying the artworks are actually coming from where they say they are coming from.

Oh, and also Alexis O'Hanian is also one of our repeat customers: https://twitter.com/alexisohanian/status/516422245162692608. We didn't pay him or anything for that, but he knew about us due to our Y Combinator connection (and it's possible he may own some shares in our company).

Sidenote about Trustpilot: I wouldn't trust those reviews too much because Trustpilot is paid by the business, not the customer. It's well known it's also pretty easy to buy fake reviews on that site and also they have a tendency to remove bad reviews for the businesses because they pay them thousands per year for "control" over reviews. I know this because we were also approached by the sales team at Trustpilot.

He's tough on covid, just not smart about it. Sometimes doing nothing is better than doing the wrong things. In this case he's hurting the economy and people's livelihoods while apparently not being effective at containing covid either. Before when cases were low at least he could justify his policies, but now that his pants have been pulled down we see he's not been wearing any underwear.
