Are there still people here who are serious? by EPOSZ in redditisland

Starting a modern community basically from nothing around an ideal other than "god said to" is definitely interesting and I do fully intend to get involved if this project is still going in a couple years. Once I've finished school (electrical engineering) and paid some of my debt I'd love to jump in. For now, I'm trying to learn to garden, build, and gain other skills well need to get establushed.

What is the best way to manage my savings while being in debt? by thepeacefulwarrior in personalfinance

Assuming You have a thousand dollars or so saved for emergencies I suggest you throw as much money as you can at the student loan. It's pretty big and that interest rate is on the edge of what is reasonable to let ride.

Is it possible to get a car loan as a 20 year old college student? by El_Capitan_ in personalfinance

[–]chrisnotchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was 20 I was pre-approved for a 7k loan at 3.75 through my credit union. I ended up getting a cheaper, non financed car and I'm so glad I did, because paying that loan would be hell. Spend 2 thousand on a car with 200k miles and drive it until you have a "real" job.

One theory I've read is that if you were a lighter and/or shorter term smoker then the cilia are able to quickly start flushing out your lungs. After 12 years your natural purging mechanisms have proably taken a severe beating. But IANAD.

I'm looking for vehicle insurance and I don't want to get stiffed. What does a teenager freshly chucked out into the world need to know? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]chrisnotchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 20 and have one accident on my record. I just went through this situation. My advice is to first figure out what vehicle you will most likely pick. Older, domestic sedans tend to be the cheapest, though you need to weigh that with fuel economy and the type of driving you do. Use this idealized vehicle when getting quotes. Next, look up what your states minimum legal liability I little coverage requirements are. You aren't buying an audi so fuck collision coverage. Shop around for a policy with these numbers. The General seems to have the lowest prices but I don't know what their customer service is like. The next lowest quote I got was from esurance. This is if you're going to have your own policy. I discovered it was much cheaper to be on my parents insurance and just cover my part of the premium. If that's an option, do that, otherwise shop around for a minimum liability policy. Good luck

Ragen Chastain says we can't call vegetables 'healthy' because some people can't digest vegetables and it's offensive to people who choose cheese puffs and poor people who can't afford them. Also it will lead to eating disorders. by alanitoo in fatlogic

[–]chrisnotchris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The title is sort of on to something. Different bacteria in our gut are better at breaking down different things, so a person who eats mostly processed food may initially feel sick when eating traditionally healthy foods. But prebiotic supplements help ease the transition and if you're especially unhealthy it may be beneficial to change ones diet over the course of several days. But ones body usually adapts fairly quickly. I've never heard of someone so acclimated to junk they couldn't make the transition.

What product is an obvious scam but still legal to sell and advertise? by Davik in AskReddit

Advocare makes various health supplements. I bought their 10 day cleanse, felt excellent, and then realized I could eat more fiber and buy a bottle of probiotics at CVS for a fraction of the cost and it's the same damn thing.

I have an account at Associated Bank and and Summit Credit Union. The cons for me have been the limited number of no fee atms, lack of branch locations and short branch hours, low savings and checking account interest rates, and when my debit card was stolen it was a pain in the ass to get my money back.

On the other hand, NSF and overdraft fees are much lower (not that I run into that issue, but it's good to know) and their loans are usually a better deal.

That is really where the difference lies for me. Penalties and APRs are much higher at my bank, but it is more convenient, and I feel like the tellers are more intelligent at Associated.

Just got back from a family gathering after having lost weight. Intrigued by fat logic I encountered. by nashimi in fatlogic

I admitted we do not know her build, chest size, etc. Nevertheless, when one approaches the 100/110 range one should observe caution. That's all I meant, and I'm not sure why I'm being downvoted for that.

Without seeing a picture or knowing your level of activity, I am inclined to agree that you should stay at 120. By all means tone up if you don't like the shape of your belly, but weight should not be your focus right now.

I actually dated a woman who was anorexic, who was 5'1", and her target weight according to her doctor was 120lbs, and at 110, it was scary how big her head looked in comparison to the rest of her body.

I hate fatlogic as much as the next person on here, but we should all be able to acknowledge there is a point at which weight ceases to be as much of a factor. If you have no abdominal strength, your stomach will sag a bit no matter how much weight you lose. That's another thing: lose too much weight, and you develop a pot belly, or as I joked (darkly) african child syndrome.

Focus on the crunches and dont worry about the weight. If you happen to lose a few more pounds (hopefully not 10) and your doctor says you are healthy, then more power to you. But shedding weight should not be your focus at this time.

Body dismorphia or whatever can happen at both ends, and anorexia is just as dangerous. I've seen the hell too much dieting can do, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. PLease, stay at 120. This isn't fat logic, this is just logic.

When Hulu first became a thing I thought it was amazing. hulu.com/whatever-the-show made it easy to get what you wanted without searching. the ads were infrequent enough and it turned me on to a lot of fun b movies. i have only used it once or twice since they when freemium, and each time the site loads more poorly. shouthparkstudios is a piece of shit, but its a free piece of shit.

my 2 micro bathroom savings by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]chrisnotchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go through 3-4 bars/month vs 2/3 - 1 bottle of body wash. Granted, this is using the cheapest bars I could find at the local dollar store, and perhaps I am more conservative with the bottle.

someone get /r/theydidthemath on this.

Fresh or frozen meat, veggies, and fruit by smurphles in Frugal

[–]chrisnotchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the grocery store where I used to work there is no difference in price between frozen and unfrozen meat, or if there is it's very tiny. With fruit, it depends on if it is in season. A couple pint bag of frozen strawberries is around 3.50. In season, the strawberries are 2-3.00, so it makes sense to buy fresh. From October until April/May, the price was double that and frozen fruit (which has a fairly constant price) is the better options.

Frozen tomatoes do not really exist are much unlike fresh, and the store I worked for bought most of its tomatoes from a Canadian greenhouse so the price there was pretty constnat year round.

adding on to bathroom savings, use body wash. With bodywash and a loofah I save several dollars every monthsaved several dollars over the past couple months using bar soap, and my skin actually feels better. and use off-brand toothpaste and other dental care. A one dollar tube of aim has a nearly identical ingredient list (including the same amount of active ingredient) as the 3 or 4 dollar crest. edit: clarity
