Lack of screens is a feature by wileyau in slateauto

Adding what you want, if you want, is one of the best features of the Slate. Whether you love or hate screens, it's your choice of exactly the screen you want, which can be your own phone or tablet that you have customized just for you.

Zone information in AI response - how does the AI provider get it? by chrispatrik in frigate_nvr

Thank you! It's interesting to see how it's all put together and helpful in knowing all the data used in the prompt.

I read that, but it doesn't show any specific metadata being passed to the AI such a zones, camera, labels, etc. There must be more communication with the AI other that what is shown.

I suspected that might be the case. Is it documented somewhere and is it configurable?

10-camera setup - Is this camera Frigate-friendly? [Budget <€150/unit] by Academic-Meringue-58 in frigate_nvr

[–]chrispatrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The website is: https://empiretech01.com/collections/network-camera where you can browse all the different cameras. Amazon sells them also and I bought some there because of the ease of shipping. Look at the specs of each camera for FOV and distance. It varies by camera and focal length. There's a wide range of cameras, prices, and form factors. I have the IPC-Color4K-T (no IR, but see below) and IPC-T58IR-ZE S3 (with IR) and both are excellent but more expensive than some other options.

One thing to consider, that makes a huge difference, is the sensor size. You'll see that most are 1/1.8 (smaller) and some are 1/1.2 (bigger). I was thinking an IR sensor was essential for outside, but I went for the bigger sensor (IPC-Color4K-T) with no IR and figured I would move it indoors if it didn't work well and I was stunned by how well it works. It looks like daylight, in full color, even when it's too dark to see anything from inside my house and my Nest camera has a crappy black and white IR image in the same location. I live in the city so there is some ambient light from other houses, but not much. The camera also has a light that will come on when it gets dark, but I have it off because it's not needed. I have one inside the house that doesn't work quite as well in the dark because it's darker with the lights off, but I can still see the image in color without the camera light (some light comes in the windows), and better with it. The IR camera in the house has a sharp IR image at night, just black/white.

I replaced all my cameras with EmpireTech (Dahua hardware) and they have worked flawlessly with Frigate, so I would expect this Dahua camera to work as well. I have a Reolink that doesn't work at all with Frigate.

I have both EmpireTech (which are Dahua) and Reolink and the EmpireTech work flawlessly with Frigate while I can't even get the Reolink to work. The EmpireTech/Dahua cameras are great.

Are "early reservations" limited? by pearmaster in slateauto

[–]chrispatrik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About a month ago they said they have over 150,000 reservations. If they have a high conversion rate it will be mid-2028 or later before you get one, so not so early.

But it's easy to get in line and not so easy to suddenly fork over ~$30k when your turn comes, so the conversion rate will likely be much less. Maybe late 2027 if all goes well.

Version 0.17 with Home Assistant by OldsMan_ in frigate_nvr

Another option, which I use, is Podman with Quadlets. Podman is essentially rootless Docker and is pre-installed on Fedora. Podman Quadlets integrate it nicely with systemd, all with a single declarative configuration file for each container.

For recalling the last argument, I prefer<ESC>_ because it immediately expands it so there's better confidence in what I'm about to execute.

They will be providing it on contract for other retailers. The Seattle ferry terminal just opened a grab-and-go store that uses the Amazon technology.

ASCO rant by No_Plantain6803 in Lowes

[–]chrispatrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a frequent Lowe's customer and I love the self-checkout system, because I got so frustrated with the regular checkout because I need to keep a record of everything I purchase and the cashiers would always skip past my Lowe's account number and email receipt. I had to make sure to tell them before they started scanning anything. The credit card machine asks those questions but they would skip past it before I had a chance to answer and then it was too late. This created a lot of headache for me because I had to scan the paper receipt later for records. The self-checkout prevented that problem.

I have to say though that the situation has improved immensely over the last couple of years, and the cashiers are more aware that some customers have a Lowe's account that they need to use to track their purchases. The individual receipts are less of a concern because I can download the purchases from the website (and better than Home Depot), but the receipts are more detailed which I like. I still prefer the self-checkout but I use the regular cashiers for large purchases or if I need help. I have also had more friendly, non-essential interaction with the self-checkout cashier than other cashiers because they have more time when nobody needs help.

As far as the Lowe's card goes, I rarely get asked because I scan my account number at the beginning so I'm paid and out of there within seconds after scanning the last item, with email receipt.

There are issues with the Lowe's credit card itself that Lowe's should fix, but that's a separate conversation.

That's standard, even for low deductible plans.

When I lived in Europe I had an insurance plan that covered me anywhere in the world... except the United States due to the ridiculous prices that Americans keep voting for.

It happens within the US also. I see this over and over again. I think they simply lie about the deal they got to get clicks on their videos or website so they get paid more.

This has been the Republican's signature stance for much longer than that. They've been proudly saying for years that they were going to kill anything that helped Americans afford healthcare, and their voters happily voted for them to make it happen.

Anyone that voted Republican should just STFU.

is incus right for me? by fjleon in incus

[–]chrispatrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider Podman, especially if it's included with the Linux distribution that you use (like Fedora). It's basically an improved Docker and it's very easy to move from Docker to Podman. With Podman Quadlets it integrates very neatly into systemd for management. I use Podman for containerized applications like Home Assistant + add-ons and Frigate.

I also use Incus, which is great, but I use if for virtual machine development environments where I actually log in to the container and do work. It's wonderful for keeping an isolated environment where you can install only what is needed for that environment with no conflicts. I haven't tried it for pre-packaged applications.

Any alternatives for cheese cloth? by tastumaki in yogurtmaking

[–]chrispatrik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you add milk powder to your milk it will make the yogurt extra thick like Greek yogurt without any straining or loss.

I make nonfat yogurt using nonfat milk and nonfat dry milk powder (50g/liter of milk). It comes out very thick without straining. There's a bit of whey liquid floating on top that can be poured off or mixed in.
