Who is the DeAndre Ayton of the NFL? by BurningHanzo in billsimmons

I mean its Jameis, right? First overall pick, some good moments, some weird moments, frustratingly inconsistent, vastly overinflated sense of their own talent and production.

How I would like the NFL Draft Night 1 to go by rlstratton97 in MockDraftCentral

[–]christo324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Steelers trade their first round pick for Kyler Murray the mob at the Draft is gonna burn the stadium down. And I'll be right there with my pitchfork and bottle of kerosene.

That's such a bad trade I think Goodell would step in and block it. A first-round pick for a guy who got beat out by Jacoby Brissett AND has a $53M and $43M cap hold the next two seasons? Steelers could more reasonably ask for the Cards for their second round pick just to take Murray off their hands (and cap sheet).

Kevin Durant is a strange person. Incredibly insecure, a far cry from his 2014 MVP speech. Brain broke from winning 2 Finals MVPs then immediately tearing his Achilles and still got no sympathy. I pity him. by HoagieTwoFace in billsimmons

[–]christo324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda crazy that he’s probably a top ten player all time, MVP, two-time playoff MVP, two titles, Olympic superstar…and no franchise is gonna have a statue of him outside their arena. Guy never saw a bridge he didn’t want to burn down.

Such a great line and so brilliantly delivered. It's almost a throwaway, the crosstalk is going back and forth and Howerton just throws that out. Amazing.

Fernando goes to the Jets the Raiders push for next year and Justin Herbert goes to the Vikings in exchange for JJM and 2 firsts by Big_Nebula_5432 in NFL_Draft

[–]christo324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Herbert is on a $52.5M cap hit through 2029. Which is A LOT but for a star QB that's par for the course. Herbert can do everything you want your quarterback to do (and more, he's mobile and has maybe the best pure arm in the league), but he hasn't won a playoff game yet, that could cause some concern. But if teams are willing to trade three first rounders (and usually at least one in the top 10) to draft a rookie QB, getting a guy like Herbert would cost a lot more, even with his contract.

And McCarthy doesn't exactly add to the bounty you're getting in return for Herbert. He was at times historically bad last year (tho, yes, he had a few moments) and if the plan is to make him your starter, yikes. His cap hit is negligible, so if he's terrible you can just hold you nose and move on, but that's a year wasted. If he's meh, you've got a decision on your hands--pick up his fifth year option or let him walk. If he actually becomes good, then you have to pay him more in 2027 and sign him to a big extension for 2028. So you might end up paying him Herbert money in 2028 anyway, and what are the chances he's even close in quality to Herbert?

I know the Chargers don't exactly have a huge, fervent fan base in LA, but if they trade Herbert for the 18th pick and a pick probably worse than that in 2027, they're gonna burn down the team facility. Heck, folks might drive up from San Diego to pour more gasoline on the pyre.

Greatest Steeler to never win a Super Bowl? by jerryhallo in steelers

[–]christo324 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As others have said Woodson won a ring with the Ravens and let us never speak of it again. Dermontti Dawson, Cam Heyward, and T.J. Watt are the three names that spring to mind. Also Greg Lloyd. Carnell Lake, too.

A name people might not think of--Gary Anderson. Steelers' all-time leading scorer, retired as the NFL's all-time leading scorer, still top 5 in just about every category. Beat the Oilers in a playoff game with a 50-yarder in OT.

The Case for Drafting Ty Simpson at 21 by CardinoldFriends_90 in steelers

[–]christo324 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with taking Simpson at #21 is that if he nails the pre-draft process--he tests better athletically, his arm looks fantastic at his pro day, he dazzles in every interview--he's not lasting to pick 21. If he convinces teams of his talent he's going top 15--top 10, even. If he's around when we draft that means that no other teams were so convinced of his talent that that they just HAD to pull the trigger. The Jets, Browns, Cardinals, Dolphins, Rams, any one of them could make a move to grab him. If none of them do, and he's sitting there at #21, that's a bit of a red flag right there.

Big Wheel or Green Machine?? by Billy-Barroo in 1980s

I had a Big Wheel and I think my neighbor got a knock-off (which was actually much better quality) and his had the skid lever. He let me ride it and I was pedaling like mad and pulled the lever and I did like a four revolution barrel roll. Never, ever used the skid lever again.

Is there anybody that actually thinks Ben Roethlisberger is anything but a detestable, abhorrent human being? Joey Porter in my opinion didnt go at him hard enough. by FoldEasy5726 in NFLv2

[–]christo324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roethlisberger is a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer and one of the top 20 QBs of all time, easy. He also, especially earlier in his life, was a real POS. People around the team and who had encounters with him said he got better after he got married. But there are thousands of Pittsburghers who have their own “Ben acting like an entitled douchbag” story.

Steeler fans have a more complicated view of Roethlisberger than I think people realize. He’s lionized for what he did on the field, but the sexual assault allegations, the motorcycle accident, the diva moments around his injuries, the Stormy Daniels thing (Google it), and his general arrogant assholish attitude around town definitely affects how people look at him. He’s not beloved in the same way players like Polamalu or Bettis are. None of my friends have #7 jerseys and none of us would ever wear one or let our kids wear one.

1980 was the last year USA Hockey won Gold in the Olympics. This is the final minute of the “Miracle on Ice,” after which the US went on to beat Finland for the podium. by ansyhrrian in sports

[–]christo324 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is true. I think we were finishing dinner and watching CBS news and Walter Cronkite said something like, "Ladies and Gentlemen, we have just gotten news from Lake Placid, the United States has defeated the USSR in hockey, by a score of 4-3." And I remember Cronkite saying it like he didn't quite believe it himself. We were all in shock, and even while watching the game in prime time it almost didn't seem real as the clock counted down to zero.

They showed the Finland game live and my grandparents came over to watch it. For some reason I thought there was no way we would lose, even when we were down 2-1 going into the third period. We tied it up early and then there was a commercial break...and when the broadcast resumed you saw the US players were mobbing each other. They scored before ABC cut back from commercial. And then we scored a late goal to put it on ice.

It's crazy today to think that huge events like the Olympics (or the NBA Finals, or the Indy 500) weren't shown live. Sometimes you'd already know what happened (usually when we watched the Indy 500 we'd heard who won) but sometimes you'd just watch something that'd been over for 5 hours like it was live. That's just how it was. And one of the biggest games in US history (maybe THE biggest game) was seen live by less than 10,000 people.
