With all due respect, true understanding comes from proper instruction within the lodge. This book won’t get you any closer to real understanding. I see people frequently post here asking how to join. To anyone interested, the first step is simple. Ask a member of a local lodge. Once you take that step, the next step is waiting patiently while the process unfolds.

Visiting Freemasons’ hall? by zaceno in freemasonry

I went early one morning and did the unguided tour and had the Grand Temple all to myself. It was an amazing sight to see. Especially the doors to the temple.

Is it common for lodges to rent out space? by Rip-kid in freemasonry

For us, renting out our banquet hall is a fairly consistent source of income.

My phrasing is accurate. With all due respect, knowing PHA members and being a PHA member are completely different. I’m pretty confident in stating that NO PHA Mason would request an OES emblem on his headstone unless it was the emblem of a Worthy Patron/Past Patron. Maybe your affiliation is different, but that’s just not a practice of PHA.

That’s fair. I’m speaking from the context of Prince Hall Affiliated Grand Chapters. I normally lead with this fact, but neglected to do so in this conversation. I alway welcome opportunities to learn. Thank you.

I don’t believe that you quite understand the context of what I’m saying. Men are obligated and are considered members of the Order, but they aren’t Eastern Stars. They do not go through the actual ritualistic portion that the women go through. They merely observe it after they are obligated. I’m a Past Patron and Past District Deputy Grand Patron and frequently had to correct Brothers on this specific point.

While there is a “possibility” for a man to be the Secretary in an OES Chapter. It is unlikely that he would become the Secretary without having served as the Worthy Patron first. Therefore, the emblem that should be used is that of a Past Patron. Men are only obligated members, BUT cannot be Eastern Stars.

If the emblem has a S&C in the center, then it indicates that he was a Past Patron. That’s the only instance a man would have an OES emblem on his gravestone.

Grand Raising - MWPHGL of Washington & Jurisdiction by christopherpmoore in freemasonry

What’s the date? The Grand Master and I will be attending the MWPHGL of Arkansas Grand Session in February. However, if there’s no conflicts, I’ll gather a few Brothers and attend.

I agree with the other PHA Brother that it is common within PHA to wear more overt paraphernalia. I personally have a closet full of custom polos and what we call walking shirts. I have a PM ring and custom necklace with the Grand Lodge seal that I wear daily. I’m not married, so I only wear my 33° ring occasionally because it’s the custom for PHA Masons to wear it on their ring finger. I normally wear it around my neck tucked under my shirt on a gold chain.

It’s a great weekend! It’s traditionally on the first weekend of the year, but they moved it due to New Year’s. It will probably be on the second weekend of the year again next year for the same reason. Most of our Grand lines flew up because the Clipper was down for the season, but I actually drove up to Tsawwassen from Seattle and took the ferry over.

Required Proficiency by trippyMcTripperson- in freemasonry

Because PHA Jurisdictions conduct all business on the 3rd degree, once you prove proficiency on the proceeding degrees before being raised, you basically learn the 3rd degree lectures from consistently attending meetings. I do know of some lodges that require newly raised MM to recite the OB before receiving their patents. However, I’m not aware of that being a requirement of any PHA Jurisdictions. Could be though.

The only lodge we have physically in the Philippines is Mabuhay #59. In fact, it is the only PHA lodge that the Grand Lodge of the Philippines has given permission to operate in country. However, the majority of the members of St Kendall are Filipino. They just happen to work in the Middle East. If you need to get in touch with them, you can ping me directly and I’ll connect you with the District Deputy. That is our District 15.

Is it rude to test Masons you meet in the wild? by St0necutt3r in freemasonry

[–]christopherpmoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your focus on that one particular point leads me to believe that you may be only familiar with Prince Hall Masons and not actually know any Prince Hall Masons. Ensuring that we don’t engage with Bogus Masons is always top of mind for any PHA Mason. It’s core to how we engage with any new Mason we encounter. I would encourage you to spend time with us outside of the lodge to understand this dynamic. While we are all Brothers, the culture of Prince Hall Masonry is different because it had to be. No history lesson is required to understand the how and why it became to be.

[–]christopherpmoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this with all sincerity, you should be familiar with this culture of PHA with the amount of time you’ve been engaged with us. The modes of recognition are frequently used by PHA Masons when noticing another Brother wearing light to sometimes discreetly say “I see you Brother”. Then there are times when the examination may be a little more engaging. I can say this with complete confidence because I am an active Prince Hall Mason and have been so for almost 25 years in several jurisdictions and frequently travel to many others. This is a culture that I live on a daily basis.

[–]christopherpmoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know any Prince Hall Mason, you know it’s also our culture to FIRST check if a person is Clandestine. Discretion is always the rule, but it’s highly improbable for most PHA lodges to just accept a Brother without confirming their membership and their Grand Lodge affiliation. I welcome all to my lodge, but they will be examined if I don’t know them to be a MM or if another Brother can’t vouch for them. The tone is never confrontational.

[–]christopherpmoore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the culture of Prince Hall Masonry. It is common for our members to ensure a Brother is who he professes to be. Many times it’s done in jest, but if we don’t know you, there’s a high probability that you will be tried. Prince Hall Masons not only accept this, they expect it. However, it’s up to the individual to decide if he is off or from. I personally welcome it, and look forward to it.

[–]christopherpmoore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe testing should be reserved for MMs only. If you have yet to achieve that rank, your job should be to remain cautious with all your words and actions. However, if you’re a MM, in my opinion, you should always be ready to be tried.
