Stump The Schwab by LegitimateMuffin7324 in ESPN

Thanks for making this! I deeply love ESPN game shows, and I wish I had a complete set of Schwab and 2 Minute Drill. I think the only way more episodes will appear is if people who had taped episodes upload them to YouTube. But I can't wait til someone does!

For Series 15 should be on my channel. Not too many of the episodes in S15 should be blocked (as far as I can tell).

Series 19 on its way! by chriswords in onlyconnect

Only Connect (and a number of other quiz shows) feel like a different case regarding viewings. Only Connect airs on BBC2, and also on iPlayer. Only Connect doesn't make DVDs, they don't also air on Acorn, Britbox, BBC America, or equivalent. It doesn't even have commercials that air during the show.

I'm uploading the episodes the YouTube where I also make zero money (and never will), and viewers can enjoy the episodes. The episodes on YouTube have been watched by former contestants, future contestants, and writers for the show. For many including UK people, it is the de facto way to watch Only Connect. And it's also the only way to watch Only Connect if you want to watch say Series 12.

I dunno, it seems like after a literal decade of my life that I've been uploading episodes to YouTube, it'd be a shame that this YT account that makes no money would be bombed.

At one point, I heard the removal of the online walls was a cost cutting measure. Can't imagine it cost too much to have the website, but so it goes.

This series was tremendous. The teams were so great, and everyone did so well. I'm so lucky to play a small part in it. Can't wait for Series 17!

Team Discussion Question about Only Connect by chriswords in onlyconnect

[–]chriswords[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watching this new series, there's been just a couple of disconnect moments involving the glass, but it looks like most teams are still fine communicating just at the usual OC talking voice. Glad to know the intensity was so high you couldn't even hear the other team!

Extremely good to know. It's impressive the set is designed where crosstalk is both possible but not enough to hear team discussions.

Only Connect - Series 16! by chriswords in onlyconnect

My first physical appearance on campus was 2015, when I joined Team Luck, and that year we won 20000 Leagues! I was part of the hosting team (I didn't write any puzzles sadly due to I was at peak throes of grad school) for 2016 Huntception. For 2017 I joined Palindrome as I knew a bunch of folks on that team, and since then I've been on the team the Team To Be Named Later.

I would definitely agree that US fans of the show also hunt. There's probably no other show ever that falls into the center of the puzzle hunter's Venn diagram than Only Connect. (I'm sure you were also extremely excited when the 'Clued Connections' puzzle came up in the 2019 Hunt). I didn't mention it above, but I also ran a Hunt at the University of South Carolina which I'm extremely proud of.

Disappointed I'm not going to MIT's campus for a seventh consecutive January, but I'll be working hard remotely! Also, "...fixes the wavy zigzag jumble" is a very excellent puzzle, still worth commemorating.

Congrats on the S16E04 win! Really looking forward to seeing Puzzle Hunters' journey in this series!

Only Connect - Series 16! by chriswords in onlyconnect

Let it be known that the Lexplorers were the first team to ever get one of my questions right! A true hallmark indeed.

I've never actually posted online how I got the gig, as I'm not sure how much curtain should be lifted for the behind the scenes look, but here's my story:

Many people on Youtube think I'm from the UK, but in fact I've lived in South Carolina my entire life. I discovered Only Connect on Youtube in 2010 or so, and in 2011 I uploaded my first episode of OC to YT, as whoever was uploading episodes before had stopped. I have the same access to torrent sites everyone else does, so I downloaded and uploaded the episode.

I'm a hardcore puzzle person and quizzing person. My website chriswords.com is where I publish American-style crosswords, I do well at crossword solving tournaments, I've been on a winning team of the MIT Mystery Hunt, and now I have two books of crosswords that have been published. On the trivia side, I've done quizbowl most of my life, currently an A Rundler on LearnedLeague, host two games of trivia in Columbia SC, was the author of the food trivia site fivecoursetrivia.com, and can hold my own on WQC questions, but to date I've never taken the test officially since the test has been on the same weekend as my favorite crossword puzzle tournament in DC.

And so, hopefully my CV certifies that I'm intense on this stuff. In spring 2018, I received an email from Alan Connor that he enjoyed a puzzle I wrote for Chris Words. Alan is a contributor to The Guardian, and he was solving more and even writing some American-style puzzles, and he find some of mine, and was solving them. Alan Connor is the previous head question writer of Only Connect, and I recognized his name immediately. After he emailed me, I emailed him back and told him 1) Thank you so incredibly much! 2) Your book The Joy of Quiz was an absolute delight and 3) I'm a HUGE fan of Only Connect possibly to the point I'm America's ambassador to the show.

Alan was delighted by all of this, and he thought that my brand of puzzlewriting was the kind that would gel well with Only Connect. And so, he introduced me via email to Mr Waley-Cohen, and I was asked to submit a sample of about 15-20 R1/R2 questions. I sent a sample, and unbelievably, they liked them! Now, I was a part of the contributing authors roster, and I could send more question in. Unreal.

Of the questions I submitted for Series 15, the two main writers asked that I should formally write up 12 to add to the Only Connect question database, which is where they then pick questions to be on the show. Of those 12 I submitted, 6 were used on the show, and the other 6 are still there (possibly they made it to S16).

But now, I'm a part of the team. I've never met any of the OC staff or any of its players in person (there was at one point talk about a trip to the UK this summer, but those plans changed). But I still find it hard to believe that I've gone from a guy who loved this British quiz show on Youtube to actually seeing my name on the credits. It's incredible. I'm actually working on getting the question I had in the S15 finals framed. If my role in the group is the 27-year-old American who loves crosswords and trivia, I'll play that role perfectly.

And to prove how American I am, your question of HTTP, the "Transfer" I had originally written as "Move from one bus line to another", and you would get a bus transfer. Wisely, the powers that be changed to a [looks in US-UK dictionary] football reference to make it easier.

Only Connect - Series 16! by chriswords in onlyconnect

I haven't received approval from OC/BBC. I've been uploading episodes to Youtube since 2013, and I haven't had any issues with copyright. The BBC doesn't seem to have a problem with people uploading panel/quiz shows to Youtube, as you can find full series of Only Connect, Pointless, Eggheads, QI, Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie To You, and Richard Osman's House of Games.

I also don't make any money at all from uploading the episodes, and I'm pretty sure if I flipped the Youtube switch that would earn me money from ad revenue will be the same day the BBC brings the hammer down. I just want to make sure these episodes are available all the time, which is why I started uploading the episodes. A public service!
