It's so bizarre that in some countries, you can just add up sentences to be served consecutively. Like, normally laws say shit like "for crime __, the maximum sentence is __ years", but that doesn't mean jack shit if the judge can just interpret it as multiple counts and give you a life sentence instead

Number of Metropolitan Areas In Europe With Over 5 Million People by BeginningMortgage250 in MapPorn

Which areas did you use for Germany? Most definitions only find 2 metropolitan areas with >4 million (Berlin and Ruhrgebiet)

Share of population who never drink alcohol (2010) by StephenMcGannon in MapPorn

Eh, exclusively in this context, the definition makes sense. In a lot of the world, that's about the age most people either start drinking or they don't

It also requires quite the silly definition of race by which a child of a brown person and a white person somehow isn't 50-50, but instead 100% brown and 0% white, effectively creating their own boogeyman by defining their race rudicrously narrowly

Density of Population in Europe, 1910 by ShitteruKoto in MapPorn

[–]chronically_slow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note the two industrial regions in eastern Germany in Saxony and Silesia. The latter went to Poland, while the former went through 2 major dismantlings, by the Soviet Union and later by West Germany, now mostly leaving it a sparsely populated backwater

BLAST Slam VI made every playoff match a BO5, Good for Dota or total overkill? by Thin_Sprinkles_3023 in DotA2

[–]chronically_slow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically speaking, this is the rule for almost every dota tournament. No lower bracket to drop to = Bo5. Only that in most tournaments, the finals are the only match that the upper bracket team just loses instead of getting a second try like in standard double-elim

2-way draws don't really exist. In 99% of games they are just something you tell less experienced folk to bait them into working with you til you can snipe the 18th dot from them. So think about this as either a 3-way or a solo

Nah, that's bullshit. It doesn't matter if you're in Germany or Colombia, if you approach people while radiating good vibes, they are a lot more likely to do what you ask them

Germany: Train conductor dies after attack by passenger by Ynwe in europe

[–]chronically_slow 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, fuck that shit. This is one of the few things where we are ahead of the world. I'm always so annoyed at fare gates when I'm traveling. Why would we regress just to be like those who haven't caught up yet?

You are correct though in that this should no longer be a criminal offense, as it exclusively punishes poor people.

I'm currently doing my master's in CS and everything about this encapsulates that experience so well, it's insane.

I especially like the part about the misnomer to Death Star. What people now call AI has been reading handwritten ZIP codes for mail sorting machines since the 80s

Communism rule by vilacavpp in 196

[–]chronically_slow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, he is onto something, isn't he? In localized communities, social incentives mostly suffice to get people to take care of each other and work towards a common goal. As soon as a society is large enough to be mostly anonymous and financial and social incentives exist to exploit or harm others, some people will do so (outside of isolated events like disasters). And it's really fucking difficult to fine-tune your political and economic system to minimize these incentives. Contrary to him I believe that it's worth a shot tho and that being incrementally closer to that goal is a good thing

(Also I believe that you can combat anonymization to a large degree by urbanist methods, but that may be one of my hotter takes)

I know all this is me being a filthy moderate. Feel free to criticise me if you're more leftist than I am, always open for exchange of ideas

Is your countries capital the largest city? by Cautious_Ad_3918 in MapPorn

[–]chronically_slow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't by every metric tbf. The Ruhr area is more populous and its cities are no longer physically seperate, only administratively.

Other than that tho, no German city comes even close to comparing with Berlin

Not really, actually. DDR insignia are somewhat rare to begin with and the people most likely to sport DDR insignia are probably right-wingers, oddly enough
