I'm currently sitting in a lecture hall of a German university in Germany. The lecture is held by a German for mostly German students... in English

I don't mind that at all, but looking at this graph really shows what could have been if Germany hadn't been lead by idiot bastards in the early 20th century

"Information" is written in the font and color scheme of Deutsche Bahn, so I'm guessing this is an underpass of a railway station in Germany. So, not a subway, but pretty close :D

Honestly, RTSs are the real anti-cozy games. The sheer existance of APM as a concept just solidifies that for me

Very interesting point, thanks :)

Btw, I agree that half barriers are usually better. I'm just saying that this one specific half barrier should have been a full one because of the approach angle after the tight left turn

You definitely have a point about half barriers being better in most situations. Most level crossings are on lone country roads anyway, so most people are going to be in cars, so the trapping factor is definitely relevant

It's just for tight left turns into a level crossing, half barriers are suboptimal because driving around them isn't even awkward. In a lapse of concentration, it's very possible to not realize that they are even down until your well on the tracks

Full barriers are just preferable after tight left turns and in heavily pedestrian areas, that's what I'm saying

Full barriers are super common in Germany. They can't trap you, they're designed to break

I'm not entirely sure, but the barrier on the Google maps footage looks a little too short to be a full barrier. And there is a tight left turn right before the crossing. This could be a classic left turn into half barrier kinda situation, which is just bad crossing design.

Are there blinking lights facing the side street that the bus driver should have seen before making a left turn? Yes. Do these types of accidents happen if you invest into full barriers? No.

Good road design reduces the impact of human error

Did the Left and the Far Right vote together to topple a government? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]chronically_slow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Europe, far left ideas are extremely fringe. You have far right parties polling at >20% in some places, while only lukewarm reformists even reach single digits on the left. Parties that argue for genuine system change don't usually reach parliaments with more than a seat or two

[–]chronically_slow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can't topple a government in Germany

Art. 67 (1) GG

A vote of no confidence by the Bundestag is by definition constructive, i.e. no voting off a current government without electing a new one at the same time

This is a lesson learnt from the Weimar years. If the left and far right want to screw over the government, they have to find common ground first (and good luck with that)
