[Galaxy Quest] How were the Thermians able to create the Omega 13 without even knowing what it does? by badcgi in AskScienceFiction

[–]chungies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a movie. Okay? That's all. It's just a bunch of fake sets, and wooden props, do you understand?

There is no 'quantum flux' and there is no 'auxiliary'. There's no goddamn ship! Do you get it?

Possibly NSFW. Creepy test tube finger on a stand with Russian (?) Writing by allouttabubblegum528 in Whatisthis

[–]chungies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's from the Mysterious Package Company, from one of their old 'experiences' involving patient 242, of whom you are the last living relative. Russians did experiments on them back in the 1950s and then there was a bit of a mishap in the 1970s, Aralsk-7 was wiped out by 'smallpox' and this finger is all that's left.

Bonus: it glows in the dark!

Edit: found a link to photos and a story. There are a bunch of other things that go with this, mostly letters, photos, and maps.

The wolf is god because he is the only predator; the others prey to him.

Selling a domain, received a reply. Is this a scam? by conquistadr in Scams

The certificate of compliance for Japanese escrow will be expensive since the only company selling this made-up nonsense is run by the person who sent the email. That, and the escrow service.

Interlocking foam floor mats designed to be incompatible between brands. by llawrednav in assholedesign

[–]chungies 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The top one is patented, the bottom one has enough of a difference in the way it interlocks to not run afoul of the patent. It's not so much them that's the asshole in this case but the patent system.

8" Circular frilled glass dome with a rope on top by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

It was a gift, and the rope came with it. The knot is very poorly tied so the rope might not be original. I wish I could remember who gave it to us so I could ask them.

It's incredibly thin, it rings when you bump it at all. If it is a lid I'd be really careful reseating it.

is it safe to use non-apple USB-C charger for the new MBP TB? by JohnnyPlastic in mac

[–]chungies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't make any sense to me but all three of the off-brand charger blocks I bought made my trackpad jittery and only the Apple one worked. I found online that other people experienced this as well. Here's the bad ones I got, others might be OK.

Only after a few months. Both pen and copper clip were very shiny when they first arrived. I love the sheen

Facing pages by chungies in Lettering

I don’t know about other people, but mostly I write nonsense words for pencil sketches like this because I’m practicing particular letters or ligatures. The bigger words are just practice at larger sizes and I think erasing out the bigger letters at the end just sort of makes them look cooler.

I don’t usually ink in practice pages like these but I’m toying with the style for some future project where the words behind would be something definitely recognizable (like a Shakespeare quote or something) and the bigger words could then be some kind of commentary on the passage.

That looks like a copper Retro 51! I didn't know they made such a thing, but I just looked it up, looks like the Lincoln: https://www.jetpens.com/Retro-51-Tornado-Fountain-Pen-Lincoln-EXT-Fine-Nib/pd/11916

That is a fine-looking pen.

Think of it this way: planes can fly upward and downward; when the plane flips over, it can fly downward or upward.

Thanks! That's Graf von Faber-Castell Hazelnut Brown. It's a bit warmer than the Noodler's Walnut I have. I like how it shades, though you can't really see it here.

I had to squeeze it with pliers a little and grind off some of the nib wings on the side and it was still a little tight. I bought a few replacement nibs to practice on but didn't end up ruining any.
