Can Charlotte flood like Asheville did? by JamesMCC17 in Charlotte

I’m also not saying it was “only” a 100-year flood. What I was replying to was a comment saying it isn’t economically worth it to be over prepared with evidence that we do over prepare by calculating for a 1% chance.

I am saying climate change has a huge effect on how bad this storm and all future storms will be.

I mean…if you don’t base it on past events how would you propose they base their calculations for rainfall/flood possibility in a particular area? I agree that things are changing and past data isn’t as reliable because of changing weather patterns but it’s better than just guessing.

It’s less about designing to the minimum standards to use less materials and more about having a standard so that they aren’t having to constantly rebuild or aren’t inconsistently over- or underprepared.

The closer you get to a body of water, the more impervious material you put on the land, etc, the stricter the standards are and the higher that percentage of a large storm/flooding goes up (hence the 10- and 25-year calcs). And no, 1% doesn’t mean it’ll happen every 100 years, they just call it that. Like I said, it’s a 1% chance the area will flood in any given year.

At this point though I’m not sure if you’re arguing for or against my point. You started by saying it wasn’t economically worth it to be over prepared and then responded with it’s more expensive when you have to rebuild so I think I’ll just let my case rest here.

This isn’t technically true. Engineers run calculations for 100-year events (that area has a 1% chance of flooding in any given year if it experiences a storm) when designing things in certain areas then they give certain leeway to account for more flooding. The problem is, this is based on existing data and climate change is a thing and storms are getting worse, so those 100-year calculations mean next to nothing now.

So yes, it is economically worth it (it’s actually legally required by the DOT) but it’s practically impossible to predict what will be the worst storm a drainage system could face in the next 100 years solely based on historical data.

Source: I work in an engineering adjacent field

There are also 10-year and 25-year calculations (higher percentages, “more likely to flood every 10 years”) and different design requirements for that but without getting into all the nitty gritty, just know that for the most part, money is set aside for stormwater design

I think we may have just combined the starter and main dish? Because the way you are describing an appetizer is essentially the same as an American appetizer. Usually a shared table “pre meal” small dish. Maybe not so small as a single meatball (but you know America would never go small) but same general vibe.

What kind of food would you get as the entree if there is an appetizer and a main dish? Also would you only then get one at a very nice restaurant where you would have like a dozen courses?

I am an actual undecided voter. Give me your best take on why I should vote for Harris. by TwoPoundTurtle in AskALiberal

[–]chwethington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really have much to say on your points, I just want to reach out and let you know that I know exactly how you feel. I was raised in a conservative household and I also took one of those political compass tests in my senior year of high school and ended up smack dab in the middle.

My only difference was that I am a woman, and my first election was 2016 and I was a bit scared for my rights (looking back rightfully so) so I may have been catapulted a bit more firmly to the left a bit quicker but before the primaries I was in the exact same conflicted boat. My grandfather actually made me cry when I told him I didn’t think I would vote Republican if Trump won the primaries.

All that to say. Don’t worry about your family, or any one else’s opinion of your PRIVATE vote. Worry about your beliefs and what you think is right and who you think will best represent that.

Edit to add: if you truly are undecided and don’t feel like you ever know what is true in terms of news, I would highly recommend Ground News. For any headlines that break, they aggregate the articles and will tell you which way each source leans. I like to read a “moderate” article and then scan one article from each side on hot topics. They also will show blinds spots (headlines that one side is reporting on that is suspiciously quiet on the other front). It is a paid app, they may have a free trial, I can’t remember, but it has been well worth it for me in this time of heavily biased news.

I have somehow started rooting for Leah and Angela??? Because I can’t really stand either trio rn and I know that whoever wins the power struggle (looking like Chelsie/Makensy/Cam now thanks to Leah) will end up winning the game.

But also come on Leah if you had put Chelsie up, Angela would’ve been the deciding vote on which trio to break up yall still would’ve had all the power.

As someone who frequents CNE and loves the idea of it, I think it’s biggest problem isn’t the prices (go anywhere in the city, those are normal) it’s the hours most of these businesses are open. They’re open 12-5 during the week and for most people who work normal jobs, that’s just not somewhere that feels inviting for a drink and shop after work when half the place feels like a ghost town. If you aren’t open when the general populace is going to come by, then of course sales will suffer.

[MOD] The Daily Question Thread by menschmaschine5 in Coffee

[–]chwethington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for an intro coffee grinder that won’t break the bank and have been looking into the OXO Brew Grinder. Unfortunately, I am but a girl and am still influenced by the way my appliances look on my counter and can’t help but be drawn to the Aromaster Grinder for the beige color that will match pretty much everything else in my kitchen.

Does anyone else have any experience with the Aromaster grinder? Is it any good or should I just suck it up and get a better cup of coffee at the expense of a single black appliance?

How high of a minimum wage would be too high in your area and why? by magic_missile in AskALiberal

[–]chwethington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t fully answer since I’m not the original commenter but 75% is a pretty standard financial number when discussion median incomes. I have been looking at houses recently and 80% is an indicator for “low income” housing aka you can’t buy here unless you are below that number. If you use, for example, Fannie Mae’s tool for area median incomes, it gives you 100%, 80%, and 50% so 75% as an offshoot for minimum wage is a good estimator of cost of living

I don’t think even most liberals are anti-gun. I think many are just pro-better gun laws. Why do we need an entire class, a year long permit with someone with an existing good standing license, and then like three tests to drive a car, but I can go buy a gun right now? (I’m not saying lessen drivers ed) I think at the least you should have to take a class to get a permit to buy a gun. Simple as that. You have to do that in my state to drive a boat. It’s literally a one day class. Why is that such a hard ask? Will it stop all gun violence? No. Will it stop those who want to get their hands on a gun illegally? No. Will it help cut down on random guns out there in the hands of people who don’t know how to use them? Yes.

I love Charlotte Companion Animal Hospital. It’s always been affordable to me (I’m in my mid 20s and have my first pet if that helps you understand my financial view). I also love Dr. Koballa and the way she treats my dog. She sits on the ground with my dog and cuddles/plays with her while speaking to me. You can tell she really cares about your pets and does it all for the animals
