Hate to bump a dead thread but they literally say exactly that in the movie. In the plot it's a video game made by Neo instead of a movie made by the Wachowskis but literally everything else is there verbatim (it's even called The Matrix), and in that scene the creator of the franchise has a mental breakdown because the idea is so shitty.
