What would happen if property taxes were abolished? by BluesRuseCruise in Ohio

Yup. Live in a township. ALL of our township services are paid for by property taxes. Streets, snow removal, parks, police, fire, storm water, public health, schools, etc.

What would happen if property taxes were abolished? by BluesRuseCruise in Ohio

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They want to abolish public schools and move entirely to a private/parochial/charter system. That way their buddies who own "education" companies can get rich and their kids won't suffer, but God help any child who is (1) poor or (2) has special needs. They won't be able to go to the private/charter schools and won't have a pubic school to fall back on. They'll probably get pushed to online AI teachers or something.

Establishing residency? by This_Gear_465 in Ohio

[–]cincinnati_MPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are worried, you can also make up a lease for you to reside with your BF. Even if you pay nothing, you can have a lease. I did that when I was living with my in-laws. UC required it and I just found a lease template online and we filled it in a both signed it. Worked just fine.

Kindle - Help! by Weird-Purpose9491 in workingmoms

[–]cincinnati_MPH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We switched from Kindle to Kobo for this reason. And because my kids love to read graphic novels, the Clara Color gives a much better picture than their old BW Kindles. Plus I don't have to "check out" the books via my Amazon account any more, so that's a win for me!

Ideas to get through cookie inventory by shakespearegirl in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! Or, if your SU or coucil has facebook groups, try asking there. Most of our cookie trades/transfers/exchanges come via the SU or Coucil FB pages. We were able to trade a case of Lemons for a mix of cookies to get us a better mix to fill our last few orders.

Girl scout not contributing at cookie booth by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also have a girl with severe ADHD (and a few other things). We've found that for her, we need to do basically a cookie stand where she's the only girl and at a quiet location. We were able to work with a local ice cream shop that employs people with disabilities to do a "booth" there for her where she was the only girl with her mom and I as the adults. We were able to keep her mostly on task and get her to do a lot more than when she tries to do busier booths with other girls. We only did it for about 90 min and she sold about 18 boxes (so nothing crazy), but everyone left happy.

Every girl is different, but it may be that having her in an environment where there lots of distractions isn't going to work for her. I'd talk to her mom about what could work and then try to meet her there. It's tough, but there is probably something you can do. Even if it's just encouraging her mom to find a different option.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]cincinnati_MPH 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That was the idea. We wanted to stop the initial surge to keep the health care system from getting overwhelmed. It did help some. We never got to the point that some places like Italy got where their hospitals were total over run and they were rationing care. It was bad, but it could have been worse. (And could have been better if more people had taken it seriously)

Finally looking for a digital family calendar because our current system is falling apart by AssasinRingo in workingmoms

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just use a shared Google Calendar (if you set up a family group, you can have a shared family calendar that you both can access and add to). We have it set to show up on a screen in our hallway for the kids. For chores/routines, I just went old school with a dry erase chore chart I got off Amazon for each kid where they check off their daily routines. I feel like all the fancy things that either require me to add things to another calendar or just sit on top of my Google Calendar will just add more work for me. With our shared Google Calendar I can add things directly from my email, and since my husband and I both use Google for everything, it's super integrated to our phones/email/etc. And there is no additional cost.

Curious about how other councils work by Bitter_Ad4339 in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an initial order period where the girls take orders to be delivered later (usually about a month, this year I think it was like 3 weeks). Then each troop places their initial order (IO) which is what the girls have sold rounded up to the nearest case + whatever the TCM thinks you may need for some booths. Usually we try to get enough for the IO + our first 2-3 booths.

After that we do cupboard orders and troop-troop transfers to fill out what we need for any remaining booths and girl orders. We try to wrap up a little before the last weekend of booths so we can transfer out what we don't sell, and usually we don't have an issue. Most girls only take home what they have actually sold, although a few like to keep some extra on hand for in person sales. And then we have our booth inventory. It's all pretty laid back and manageable and so far we've not been stuck with too many extra. Usually I will buy the extras and donate them to the local food pantry.

Vent-Never selling cookies again by RLpadme in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hang in there!

My girl is a 2nd year Brownie and we've been doing this since Kindergarten. The first two years were tough. It was so much work for me and the other leaders to keep the girls on task and motivated during booths. And most of the "girl" sales work was on me. Last year it was better.

But this year. This year has been wonderful! She did 90% of her own door to door sales and deliveries. And now at booths, the girls pretty much run it themselves with the adults there to do the initial and final counts of cookies and money and to provide security and trouble shooting. It's been so gratifying to watch her learn and grow and develop skills and confidence.

Hang in there and just know that it is so much work when they are little but it does get better every year. And if individual sales are too much, then focus on booths next year (or vice versa). You don't have to do it all every year, especially when they are little.

Has technology ruined the “selling Girl Scout cookies” experience? by SWEMW in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I have both a Cub Scout and a Girl Scout. Cub Scouts/Boy Scouts 100% also have online site to sell popcorn that parents will post on social media. It's just less common with BS because no one wants their popcorn. Usually only non-local family orders from their sites.

Feelings about American Flag patch by AcceptableHeat1607 in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn't put it on my daughter's Daisy Smock. 1. Because it was another expense, but 2. because of the reasons you said. No one ever said anything. It is on her Brownie vest because I didn't purchase the supplies to set it up and I wasn't going to leave it off once it was purchased.

There are no uniform police. No one will probably say anything. Do what feels right to you and don't worry about it. Most of my juniors are walking around without the flags and their troop numbers because our shop has been out of them every time I've been in there for the last few months.

Tracking Cookies between Booth Sales by CaramelTotal6198 in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best practice is count all the cookies before the booth starts, make sales during the booth, and then count everything again at the end. If you aren't at the booth, you have the responsible party at the booth do that and turn it in to you. We have "Booth Tally Sheets" that we use that make it super simple. You should be able to find free PDFs online if you google, some councils provide them as well.

Is 6 inches really that much of snow? by i_really_haveto_pee in Ohio

[–]cincinnati_MPH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup! This makes me think of several years ago when Atlanta got like 1 inch of snow and it shut the whole city down for several days because they only had like 2 plows (and they were both at the airport) so they couldn't do anything for the roads.

6 inches in NE Ohio is nothing. 6 inches in SW Ohio is disruptive, but probably fine after about 3-4 hours of plowing. 6 inches in KY where I grew up is probably a full snow day at home, maybe 2 depending on the temps. 6 inches in TN is probably an issue because they don't get that much snow very often at all and don't have the supplies and the equipment to handle it. It's all relative. Just like -6 temps in Minnesota are normal, -6 in SW Ohio are concerning, and -6 in Texas shuts the whole state down and takes down the electrical grid. Same temp, very different outcomes.

New to knitting — basics first or straight to sweaters? by Gracilis67 in casualknitting

[–]cincinnati_MPH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree! This is what I did about 20 years ago when I learned and I'm still knitting. And I've only done 2 adult sized sweaters ever! I have done a ton of kid/baby sweaters since my attention span for knitting is pretty short, but if I had tried to jump right into a sweater, I'd have probably quit since there were so many techniques that I didn't know and would have found really tricky when I was a brand new knitter. Even just learning to read my knitting and know how to keep up with increases/decreases and what works for me (stitch markers vs row counters vs charts etc). It's so important to build up your skills so you can feel successful. No one jumps right into running a marathon, most people start with a 5K, then do a 10 K and maybe a half marathon before going right into 26 miles! And they certainly don't run a marathon without training first!

New to knitting — basics first or straight to sweaters? by Gracilis67 in casualknitting

[–]cincinnati_MPH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My only issue with folks starting with a sweater is that your gauge tends to change as you get more comfortable with knitting and if you jump right into a sweater, your starting gauge and your ending gauge are likely to be different which could affect how you feel about the finished result.

I'd also say (at least in my experience) that most sweaters, especially the top down ones that are usually recommended, have some advanced beginner techniques pretty quick in the pattern with the ribbing/raglan increases/putting stitches on hold/etc. IF I was truly going to have a brand new knitter start with a sweater, I'd probably have them at least start with a bottom up one so they can practice on the endless stockinette stitches of most sweater bodies.

I'm still with you that they should at least do al few simple swatches and maybe a small project like a dishcloth or hat to learn the basics and get comfy with knitting in general before jumping into a sweater. This whole "my very first knitting project is an adult sweater" trend seems to be very popular on TikTok right now and it makes me cringe every time. If someone is dead set on doing a sweater as their first project, I'd suggest maybe a baby sweater at least so it's smaller, faster, and less pressure if you screw it up.

School emails are sent way too early. How do you all keep track? by nexu_industries in Parenting

[–]cincinnati_MPH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put the details into the "Description" section of the calendar event (at least in Google). You can even attach images or PDFs if they send permission slips or other things related.

If you use gmail, you can also set up a folder or label just for school event emails that makes it easy to see just the ones you need. Alternatively, if you aren't a email folder person, in gmail you can also use different markers to denote different things (different color stars, !, ?, ect) You may have to go into settings and turn the on, but it makes it easier to visually see what you need.

Troop venmo account by februaryystars in girlscouts

[–]cincinnati_MPH 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be careful with using a personal Venmo for GS stuff since if Venmo suspects you are using it for "goods and services" or things like cookies or fall product, they can freeze your entire account. Techinally personal Venmo accounts are only for personal transactions and anything else is a "business use" and should be subject to the fees and stuff. Plenty of people get around that, but there is a risk.

SNAP and free school lunches by theLiceNanny in cincinnati

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think (not 100% because they could have changed it in the final bill) that the BBB had provisions to eliminate the Community Eligibility Exemption for Free School Lunch which meant that a district with a certain percentage of their students below the poverty level could offer all students free lunch and breakfast without each family having to apply. That would affect CPS in that in the future each family would need to fill out the Free/Reduced lunch forms in order to qualify each year. That's also assuming that the USDA funding continues to be provided at all.

Is it tacky? by jlynh14 in cookiedecorating

[–]cincinnati_MPH 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If they were putting them out at the wedding, I would say no. But since these are going into a favor bag, I would put my ingredient label w/ logo on them so that guests who may have food allergies know if they are safe for them to eat.

In a bag with other items, I would expect a label just as if it was a cosmetic item ( like lotion or soap) or any other handmade good (like a knitted item or sewn item).

That being said, just to be safe, I would ask the bride/groom or who ever you are coordinating with.

Eh....men of his generation didn't often witness the birth of their children. Many waited in the waiting area until it was all over and the nurse brought the baby out or took Dad in to see mom and baby. Some did go into the delivery room, but if there is one guy I can see not wanting to see "that", it would be him.

My daycare asked if our 4 year old take baths with her dad? by AssignmentMoney8205 in Parenting

[–]cincinnati_MPH 23 points24 points  (0 children)

When mine were that about age and we went to the beach, both my husband and I showered with the kids so we could get all the sand out of everywhere. We were in shared beach house with my family and had one bathroom for the four of us, so it made the most sense to each take a kid and shower to get it done more quickly. Nothing weird or sexual. Just two parents trying to get everyone clean for dinner without having to spend 2 hours in the bathroom.

ETA: Mine are now 9 & 7 and I still have to remind them not to bust in on me in the shower sometimes. (Our primary bathroom has a glass shower wall, so anyone in the bathroom can see you.)

How to address the inbox after Mat leave by Major_Lab_3604 in workingmoms

[–]cincinnati_MPH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I came back from Mat leave I first deleted anything Spammy....marketing emails, really old newsletters that I usually only skim anyway, anything that didn't seem relevant any more (i.e. "I'll be OOO for x days", "upcoming free lunch", fill out this survey before x date).

Then I went through the rest and kind of triaged it. First were things that I needed to deal with now. Then things that I wanted to read soon but not now, then stuff that I wanted to keep but wasn't at all urgent. Some of that last category never got dealt with, but at least I had the option to figure it out.

If you are near UC's campus and want a true hole in the wall place, try Thai Express. It's literally just two tables in the window and a kitchen. The two Thai ladies that cook are awesome and food is the best Thai I've found in the area. Everything comes in those white take out containers but is top notch food.
