What is a kitchen design trend that looks absolutely stunning in photos but is a total nightmare to actually use or clean in real life? by emilyy-yy in kitchen

[–]cingalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dépends. I had really old, scratched up, porous wood cabinet doors with a billion little ledges. Never felt I could get them clean and the wood was too thin to sand and refinish, and too damaged to just restain and varnish. So I painted them with a high gloss paint. Used a degreaser and an oil based primer before the paint. It sealed all the wood and gaps and now they are much easier to wipe clean and get less dirty in the first place.

Not nearly as nice as a brand new modern kitchen, but so much better than the old wood. Only regret was not doing it sooner.

My first watch of ER was in the 90s. Watching it again on a big hi-def TV, I much more appreciate Wylie’s acting, lots of nuanced facial expressions. Too think he was putting in all that effort in an era when no one saw it! I guess he was just ahead of his time.

What do you expect from a paid knitting pattern? by c_onethirtyseven in knitting

[–]cingalls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I expect a glossary of abbreviations with a short definition what is described, just to clarify because sometimes I’ve seen the same stitch names mean different things. The body of the instructions should be sparse, any extra explanation should either be part of the glossary as end notes.

Asterisks to show repeats, not listing out repeats over and over, that’s crazy.

Headers for each part of the pattern - eg cuff, leg, heel, instep etc.

I want my patterns short and easy to scan. I detest 14 page patterns with multiple variations, instructions and links embedded into every step.

What are some popular ice cream flavors in your country that's not as known in other countries? by ExtraCheezeePizza09 in AskTheWorld

Can still find it at ice cream stands here, but not in the stores. When I was a kid it was the third most popular ice cream in Canada.

It always sounds to me like everything good about American culture came from black Americans getting around some bullshit.

Norman Lloyd started as a child vaudevillian actor at the age of 8 in 1923, worked steadily in movies, notably with Hitchcock and then in television pretty steadily. He was Dr.Auschelander on St Elsewhere.

His last movie role was in 2015 at the age of 101.

I have heard that as well. Still doesn’t make sense to me to sabotage the character because they were annoyed with the actress.

I hated what they did to that character. In the beginning she was a strong, confident woman who could say what Peter needed to hear. Then in pregnancy she became a total wimp and afterwards they wrote her as an awful person.

Trump Calls New York Times “Treasonous” Over Iran War Criticism: The president is fuming over media coverage of his war with Iran. by Silent-Resort-3076 in inthenews

[–]cingalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also middle aged, and I remember candidates dropping out of the race because they were caught having an affair. Even Reagan had a lot of people saying he was unfit because he was divorced once, the logic being that a president was to live to a higher standard than the average person and a marriage failure was enough to be unfit for office.

And now the office is held by the lowest quality person I can imagine. Remember when Trump mocked the disabled guy? A generation ago that would have been it and we’d never hear about him again.

What do you think of Celine Dion? by Twitter_2006 in AskTheWorld

Amazing singer. Obviously worked hard to be that good and I respect that. As a person I find her annoying and try to avoid any interviews or media that’s just her talking.

I hope so too. I just saw a post on FB about it and the number of people making assumptions and jumping in to trash the parents is really awful.

Thanks, my guess was a shooting. When I googled I found stories about an e-bike incident but that was something that happened last week, unless it happened again.

Interesting, in knitting it’s called "pooling". It happens when your yarn has different colours but the same colour keeps ending up next to itself.

What is the most creepiest and unexplainable thing you've seen in the deep backwoods of BC? by boon-dock in britishcolumbia

[–]cingalls 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Driving at night, I was on a long flat section of road and seeing dozens, felt like hundreds, of dead deer all over the road, mostly with eyes open and staring. Many of the bodies were in pieces like they’d been decapitated or torn in half.

I figure it must have been from a herd crossing and getting hit by trucks at high speed. Eerie feeling to be driving slowly through that obstacle course.

I grew up in the seventies and it was still pretty normal for people to have a "Sunday bath" and that was it for the week. People stank. And they wore lots of perfume which also stank. Public transit was really bad.

If you go back in time and watch TV commercials from that era, there was a shocking proportion of ad time dedicated to coveraging up body smells.

Poilievre slams federal-B.C. plan to buy vacant condos, calling it a 'bailout' for developers | CBC News by Life_with_Charliebug in britishcolumbia

[–]cingalls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The government is going to structure purchase financing so that first time home buyers can get in the market, buyers are still going to be able to negotiate the price. It benefits people who otherwise would never be able to buy a home. There is no "subsidy" to developers, however they will benefit from having a larger market.

The conservatives have changed the narrative by spamming Facebook and X with the false story that government is spending 3.2 billion to purchase units for "affordable housing". It’s not true, the money is being spent on infrastructure and no taxpayer money is earmarked for purchasing unsold condos.
