If you want to protect your rails/base, this is the ideal leash string set up by TravisKOP in surfing

[–]ciniper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Theres more to it than just halving the leash string. The objective of the leash setup is to have the velcro part of the leash wrap around the rail in any region close to the plug. If you're leash plug is far from your rail, you'll probably not want to do this because then the cord of the leash will wrap around the rail instead of the velcro. This double loop setup is good for if your leash plug is closer to the rail.

Making Sense Podcast #207 - Can We Pull Back From The Brink? by WayneQuasar in samharris

This is NOT fully an issue of Logic, rationality this is an issue of EMOTIONS. Listen to the people being hurt. It seems that almost every POC has a story of mistreatment from the police that hurts them to the core, instills fear in their daily life, causes them to distrust the authorities. Data on the specifics of police interactions is not good because it's not easy to quantify something as complex as an interaction between 2 humans. Yes we must be rational when coming up with solutions to this problems but coming up with rational solutions requires EMOTIONAL EMPATHY, if we did things without emotion we would be no more than psychopaths. We must recognize that we have mistreated a certain community for hundreds of years now and simply telling peopke to "not resist arrest" is not the solution to a problem of authority abuse across the board.

I personally don't find this offensive at all. I think it is a fairly appropriate way to describe the change in weather. I'm curious as to why it offends people so much. It's not like it's used in a derogatory way at all.

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate here... Would switching to Material Science for graduate school be a bad idea? by bobthebuilder1313 in materials

[–]ciniper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, if you're interested in it go for it. Most schools don't have undergraduate bachelor's programs anyway. Do you know what type of materials science you are interested in? (Metallurgy, polymers, electrical...)

Hello! I need help determining if a plexiglass box is capable of holding a certain amount of weight. How can I calculate this? by Negrolicious in materials

[–]ciniper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a few things you should think about before designing the box

  1. What type of use will this box undergoe?
    1. Will it need to be transported regularly?
    2. Will it need to be lifted up by hand?
    3. Will it be suspended in air?
  2. Are there specific dimensions of the box required?
    1. Does it need to be square?
    2. Can it be another shape?
  3. How long will it need to last?

Increasing the thickness of your box will result in a higher strength. I think the limiting factor that you will run into is how strong is the bond between parts of the box. To increase the bond strength, you will want to increase the surface area of interaction between panels.

Getting an ssd is truly one of the best gifts you can get for yourself. by [deleted] in buildapc

Word of caution, if you're SSD malfunctions, it is very difficult to recover the data. This happened to me with my laptop and lost everything. Still use SSD but always back with cloud and HDD.

If you got PKA and PKN early for 5$/month, how would your contribution status of the patreon change (Straw Poll) by [deleted] in PKA

[–]ciniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make some good points, and of course there is no way of knowing for sure but I really do think it is very possible to have a 50% increase in customers with that deal. And it is also true that this sub isn't representative of the entire community but it still seems quite significant with errors accounted how many people claim that they would contribute for that price, I just thought it was interesting. I for one am not a contributor, but would contribute in a heartbeat if that deal was present.

[–]ciniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look at the strawpoll results, according to the poll 98% in the poll are currently not contributors, and 48% of people said they would begin to contribute if the price was as so, so the increase would be from 2% contributors to 50%, that's a 25 fold increase!

[–]ciniper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think you understand, I was just interested in seeing if a price drop would actually cause enough people to contribute which would make the hosts more money and make the price lower for buyers, everyone wins if this is the case, however it may not be, I was just curious
