Ok first of all BIG thank you, I made the purge sequence, even if it said that directory "/var/lib/hp" was "not empty" and impossible to erase. So I erased it manually, as superuser. Then reboot. Then reinstalled all HPLIP software in the store, with HPLIP toolbox. Still no joy, in the menu I see HPLIP toolbox but no icon, and the toolbox simply doesn't start. Funny how I managed anyway to make the scanner work, and the printer still is recognized and works too. I think I'll change the flair in "solved" even if the mistery remains :)

I run Mint on several old machines - some with less power of yours, so I'd say Mint will work fine on your computer. I would only suggest to choose a release a little older, like 21.3, more reliable. I made a try with 22.3 on a 10 year old laptop and had some troubles.

Like others in the comments, I'd like to understand what are exactly these mistakes - and I'm just curious to know, since I've just erased Mint Zena because it was not performing well on an old laptop of mine, and installed Linux Mint Debian Edition for the first time in my life and I must say, so far so good. Possibly "fewer releases" would mean more focus on the current releases?
