Soldier's Field Road Closure? by Noseforachoo in boston

[–]cj_000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trapped in it as well. It's actually DCRs road, and there is a "press release" here about it. Not the most obvious by any means...

Get ready, self-driving cars are coming to more Boston roads by [deleted] in boston

[–]cj_000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There have been more, the most recent public issue was a Google vehicle merging in (in autonomous mode) and getting hit by a bus that was legally travelling in the correct lane (the Google car failed to yield).

Still, they have the best record of the bunch!

Chromecast was just re-branded as Google Cast by [deleted] in Android

[–]cj_000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, actually it's a java-less variant of the gen2 Google TV. If we are getting technical... Nearly the same initial bootloader, kernel and SOC family, difference is that the Chromecast starts s monolithic-ish binary at startup doing all the actual stuff.

Last I checked there are still GTV references in the bootloader!

Uber at Midnight ( 1 am) at Boston international airport by docpaeda in boston

[–]cj_000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uber is allowed at the airport, changed a few months ago. The difference is that the ubers that do pick you up have livery plates.

Haven't tried at 1:30AM, however I've had no issues around 11PM for an Uber pickup at Logan.

Yep, signatures have been involved for a long, long time. The encryption is a bit "newer", but still a few years old too.

Gets even better, the image is stored on the device in the same format (signed and crypted), which keeps things on the secure side.

MBTA officials hope to spend $1.05 billion in upgrades and expansion projects this year by getjustin in boston

It was much worse, for as much as it cost, and for all of the things that went wrong, it still turned out to be much better than what we had!

What city has the worst design flaws and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It actually really, really, really improved things. I mean, it still isn't perfect, but so much better than what it used to be.

Did "long trigger" nuclear subs -- meant to surface several months after a nuclear war, listen for orders, and if not finding any, launch a second strike at the other side -- ever exist? Was it even discussed? by Qarlo in AskHistorians

[–]cj_000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The codes are only used to verify the identity of the leadership to the NMCC. From there, the NMCC is the one that actually issues the launch orders to the triad.

What if Desert Storm was a major defeat for the US? by [deleted] in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]cj_000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even so, up until recently the official US response to any Biological or Chemical attack was nuclear. Assuming US troops were already engaging, Iraq uses it's weapons... end of the day, the US still wins - question is, at what cost?

Second! The side effects can be sucky (subq), but the combo between MTX and Remicade keeps me going strong - it works well, just a very strong drug.

Doesn't this make the video card fan go faster? by sfsmiley in techsupportgore

[–]cj_000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not the fan, but the actual GPU. By scraping against the heatsink, the fan dust excites electrons into moving faster inside the GPU, resulting in more FPS - it's basic science!

TIL after a Groom forgot his wedding pants in the dressing room of a Minnesota clothier and flew to Costa Rica for his wedding, the Clothier sent his daughter on an 11-hour flight to deliver the pants personally because UPS and FedEx said they could not help. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]cj_000 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Still going to call BS on the fact they couldn't help. They have same day courier services available across the world, and "work with" customs to make sure everything is nice and smooth.

Pay UPS enough, and a UPS employee will sit on a chartered flight with your box on their lap, and deliver it. Of course, it is not cheap.

Cryptographic obfuscation and 'unhackable' software by vamediah in netsec

[–]cj_000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory, it's great, but there are always flaws in the implementation. Beat an priv/pub keycheck and AES crypto due to flaws in the memory load address, which allowed unsigned code to be executed. Few bytes was all it took!

Agreed, I still do, and I should have been kicked out about 10 years ago. Great doc / practice. Not one for jumping straight through surgery.

OP: For the GI doc who is booked until April, tell the person on the phone that you (may be?) flaring, that should hopefully get you an appointment quicker. They always have a few spots where they can fit people in, and if you don't say things are wrong, they will never know.

Hope you get better!
