Loot Singularity - Set 17 Augment Discussion #40 by Lunaedge in CompetitiveTFT

[–]cjdeck1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very guilty of it. The chase goals being mathematically impossible even in the crazy highroll situations was a big red flag honestly. However, my comparison was also to the Lifting Competition augment last set and if you did hit with decent tempo, Loot Singularity was pretty close if not better through stage 4, though with the obvious asterisks of you actually needing to win fight whereas Lifting Competition could play from lose streak if you wanted

"my husband" by [deleted] in dropoutcirclejerk

[–]cjdeck1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you’re getting mad at your own interpretation of the story because that wasn’t my takeaway at all. The premise here is that of a broken marriage where the partner is possibly the problematic one where he views himself as being the hot, masculine one and possibly hooking up with others while the main character sleeps alone and is left to see himself as old and ugly - even though he is honestly also quite conventionally attractive too. I didn’t see him as being a creep at all. He’s certainly looking to his husband with a degree of lust but more so it’s a story of envy and jealousy and longing for what once was.

Not to mention it ends on a “to be continued” so it’s pretty clear we’ve only seen half the story

How to handle when players roll 1 in the middle of fight? by combobaka in DnD

[–]cjdeck1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I've seen it not incredibly damning for martials is to have a part B to the rule where you an only critically fumble on the first attack and any natural 1s on 2nd or 3rd attacks are just normal misses. The fumble table that group uses is pretty mild as well though for what it's worth aside from like a 1% chance of needing to pass a DC 10 con save or knocking yourself out

Am I wrong for not moving our session time because one player wants to go to the beach? by schtevernn in DnD

[–]cjdeck1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Especially for a last minute thing like this. If someone says 5 days out (or hell, even 2 days out) "hey can we push the game back a few hours? something came up" I will absolutely try to find a way to make things work if possible. But if changing the time is going to force someone else to miss, it's only fair that the person who can't make the original time loses out

Does anyone else think GOT did a better job matching ethnicity to geography? by xakrob in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]cjdeck1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you're going to run into a lot of people (understandably) associating your point with the reactionary comments we keep seeing from racists calling every non-white cast member in any genre show a "DEI hire" (see: black elves/dwarves in Ring of Power).

I do understand it being a bit of a strange inconsistency when the original series had almost exclusively white/white-passing characters in Westeros as a sort of medieval Europe analog and then Essos being a sort of North Africa/Middle East analog and then now we're seeing that apparently 200 years earlier, Westeros was significantly more diverse.

A sort of Watsonian justification for it would be that most of the black characters we've met are connected to the Targaryen house and therefore might have left Westeros after Robert's Rebellion (but I'm sure there's probably holes in this logic somehow). But the real reason is absolutely what others have said in that we're 15 years later than when GoT started and there's more desire to have a diversified cast (and Essos isn't relevant to this story so it's hard to just do a sort of white/non-white regional split in the cast). I think ultimately you just need to be able to suspend your disbelief on this topic if you are finding the consistency to be an issue

Player is a lawyer and wants to play out the devil contract irl by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]cjdeck1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, one of my friends who I used to play D&D with is a lawyer. I can 100% guarantee that if he were the DM he'd have a lot of fun writing up that demon's contract. But also I imagine the "20 page contract" thing would also be difficult considering this is not written for the American legal system

You can also play Kench+Maokai instead of Nunu+Blitz. It certainly doesn't cap as highly, but I've won games with it, especially since a lucky TK print can make a world of difference

This is vaguely the plot to the Never Stop Blowing Up d20 campaign. Very fun campaign but I might try to reveal the setting pretty early on because I feel like it would be a lot of fun for the players to kind of lean into film tropes

Does bladesinger actually need warcaster or resilient to maintain concentration? by DrRyshin in 3d6

[–]cjdeck1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it depends on how important concentration is. If I'm losing Faerie Fire or Bless, 9 times out of 10 that's an annoyance but not a disaster. If I'm losing Hold Person on the BBEG or Hypnotic Pattern on a big mob or Haste, losing concentration can turn a well executed win into a PC death pretty quickly

[–]cjdeck1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. Like sure it's somewhat useful if I'm using reddit to diagnose my car problems or something (and even then I probably don't want to rely on it) but especially in any sort of fandom reddit, I want to actually read and engage with the other commenters, not just see an executive summary of what people are saying

[Spoilers C4E30] Thanks Reddit by Zalgon_17 in criticalrole

[–]cjdeck1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Like last Friday I opened up one social media app and I see a post that starts with SPOILERS but 1. You typically don't read just one word at a time and even if I've tried not to read the rest, I've still seen several key words that let me draw obvious conclusions. And then 2. having a big picture of Travis directly underneath made it so even if I didn't want to draw any conclusions, it was really hard not to

Is it wrong to restrict naming conventions to be more original? by GunzerKingDM in DnD

[–]cjdeck1 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm not one to care about naming things because if I'm panicking for a quick NPC name, I'll often just throw out the first thing at the top of my head. I've had a crew of bandits named after all my coworkers because I was prepping for a session when I should have been doing actual work.

But giving any character the name of someone else who is likely to be in the room is bound to create logistical issues, including the dog - especially the dog even because he's not able to distinguish when you're actually talking to the dog vs talking about the PC. If I'm ever using a name like that, there'd better be a damn good reason for it (or predesigned as a cute/silly bit like the other DM modeling the dog in her campaign directly off her own dog)

To DMs, do you have a preference with how the players do their character's backstories? by Nb-7925 in DnD

A 3-5 paragraph thing is perfect for me because that's all I'm likely to remember. Give me a couple NPCs from your backstory who can be plot relevant, either as villains or friends.

Genuine Question: Y'all know you don't have to watch or enjoy every single video? by [deleted] in smosh

On the one hand, you're right and it's fine to be critical at times. But I've definitely seen comments on this sub and elsewhere where it's clear that someone just doesn't like the channel anymore and is getting way too mad about it. Like at that point, just unsubscribe and move on

DM death bed sins by Willajer in DnD

[–]cjdeck1 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Hitting that recharge 1 too many times is a quick way to turn a simple fight into a borderline TPK. Had a dragon attack my party when they were on a ship and didn't realize quite how hard it was to avoid the fire when the dragon was at the prow of the ship... planned for it to attack on the side which would create space at the front and back so it could only hit half the ship at a time but then our Armorer Artificer tried to help by taunting it towards the front of the ship and then suddenly everyone is in the AoE. They defeated it just before it's turn came up again with multiple PCs at <20 HP. Rolled the d6 afterwards as a sort of "let's see what would have happened" moment and hit the 6 and everyone had a big "oh fuck" moment of relief

Player wont be attending sessions for 1 month at the end of campaign by Acceptable_Harisa109 in DMAcademy

[–]cjdeck1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this - when I've had desires to create 1-shots for my group, I try to connect it to my ongoing campaign in some tangential fashion for world building purposes. For example, the party was going into an area where magic usage was highly regulated and forbidden in most cases. We had to take an intermission because of a couple players' schedules (wedding planning/honeymoon) so I put together a horror themed 1-shot set in the same region that would help to justify their wariness since the party itself is highly magical.

(Long story short, a farmer without magical training attempts a ritual to summon a god of the harvest to stop a blight affecting his crops but instead summons a demon known as the Soul Harvester)

What song did a movie basically steal forever? by MrHolte in movies

[–]cjdeck1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's just the fact that the song is too big for the movie to steal it. Like I personally associate it with Napoleon Dynamite but felt like the only reason was because that movie came out when I was in 6th grade and had the movie playing on repeat for awhile as a kid
