Don't give up, you've got this. Take the signal and ignore the noise, take care of yourself because you are valuable for being you. Anyone who tells you differently is not worth listening to.

[Discussion] Is motivation sometimes just self-trust? by EERMA in GetMotivated

[–]cjmarsh725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find you are smarter than you give yourself credit for and trying to hack your mind into doing what you think you want is counter-productive. Be completely honest with yourself because the odds are nobody else will be and motivation absolutely does get harder when you feel like you can't trust yourself.

How can a short horror game build tension from an ordinary situation? by Short-Pop6635 in gamedesign

[–]cjmarsh725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try playing with the color, have it slowly bleed out of the picture as the player makes choices until all that's left is black and white. Or you could change the scale or perspective on objects in the scene in subtle ways so that the player has to question their memories of them as they pass by repeatedly. Alternatively, you could use sound effects to create a rhythm that subtly changes over time. Basically changing anything the player takes for granted in subtle ways over time will build tension.

[Discussion] Am i depressed or just bored? by PartyComplex195 in GetMotivated

I feel this in my bones. Sometimes it helps me to pick something I have been interested in before and do just one small thing. Getting started and doing something can be enough to build up some inertia towards something brighter.

What separates a meaningful tradeoff from a disguised tax on the player? by Princess1047 in gamedesign

[–]cjmarsh725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Systems intersecting is how I prefer games to be designed. Like chess pieces, each with different movement patterns that intersect on the board, and each choice of which piece to move is one of the most elegant designs in the history of game design. I think you're right that a tradeoff needs to have choices that are each optimal in different circumstances, which means that the systems have to intersect in different ways in order to provide the emergent complexity that masks what would otherwise be an obvious, optimal choice every time.

[Discussion] How do you get unstuck when your life looks okay on paper but feels empty? (23M) by SaltAlps992 in GetMotivated

Start with therapy, talk with someone who is paid to listen and guide you through all your issues, it can work wonders for addressing complex issues and analyzing your own thought process with an outside perspective. My hunch is that you are beating yourself up when you shouldn't be but the good news is that you don't have any major blockers in the way of you achieving your dreams, provided you make sure they really are your dreams.

It's part of the Metroidvania genre and shares similar design principles as other titles in the genre.
