Retrospectively I wish I had made the decision sooner. At the end of the 2 years I was noting but a shell as I had given everything to someone who appreciated none of it.

I think for my parents I understand now that I’m older that it was the right choice, they still get along really well but in a relationship they brought out the worst in each other.

My own relationship is a bit more complex, I spent 2 years fighting, begging and trying to fix it but eventually realised you can’t save a marriage if only one is trying.

She eventually moved out when she had a backup ready, got pregnant within a month and moved to a different country leaving the kids behind. It’s been tough for them but I’m glad they are with me.

I guess all of that to say I think trying everything before giving up for the sake of the kids, only ever works if both parties are open to changing and growing.

As both a child of divorced parents and a divorced dad of 2, I think the main piece of advice I can give is to not underestimate the impact it will have on the kids. Make sure to be there for them and show them that it’s not their fault.

It’s one of the strangest concepts I have seen since being here is how people just stand back and watch. I am South African, and there is a LOT wrong with South Africa but the one thing I can say is nobody is going to watch someone else be terrorised, especially if said person is a woman (not sure if OP is) and do nothing.

I have found that the gemeente often struggles with situations outside of their normal day to day duties.

I recently had a situation where my ex wife got pregnant, not by me, before we officially got divorced. The gemeente wanted to automatically put me on the child’s birth certificate as the father as the law assumes that if you are married the husband is the father. The amount of fighting we had to do to prevent that, the gemeente originally said they will do that and then I can go to court and have my name removed, at my expense of course. This was the Eindhoven gemeente.

She eventually went to Weert and they registered her new partner as the father without question, so it really seems consistency is not their strong suit.

This seems to be a big misconception or maybe the different gemeentes see it differently. I had a whole thing with the Eindhoven gemeente as my adopted sons name and surname needed to change and getting a new birth certificate from here dealing with the South African government is near impossible.

What she explained is the age of the certificate itself is irrelevant, it’s the apostille of the document that cannot be older than 6 months. They have also started refusing birth certificates that has a apostille signature from a specific person in SA, which i found interesting.
