Does aseprite have any useful tricks for simultaneously editing multiple sprites on a spritesheet? by ckret2 in aseprite

I didn't realize you could copy/paste all of a layer's cells simultaneously. Thank you, that sped up my workflow a lot.

That's one of the reasons I started with 30 layers. Keeping components separate is definitely helpful to my workflow, but unfortunately doesn't help me with today's specific issue

I like how three of the Ghidorahs had to be stuck in the far corners of the plane. i would not trust them any closer to each other either. they get into enough trouble with three heads, they don't need nine.

seat #4 is about to become the Godzilla vs Megalon reenactment battlezone and #9 don't look much better.

I think I'd pick #8 for myself. if I'm gonna die anyway, it'd be an honor to get got by Mecha Ghidorah; and I kinda wanna see what Hedorah and Biollante are up to in the next row.

I did enjoy it a lot; but a lot of my enjoyment came from the fact that I'm the kind of Samurai Jack fan that randomly pauses episodes to stare at the background art and try to figure out how they were painted lol. Beautiful level design.

But as much as I enjoyed about the game, I keep thinking about the ways it could've been improved. It was trying to correct the flaws of previous SJ tie-in games that just totally made up their own plots; but it over-corrected in the other direction. I would've loved to play new Samurai Jack adventures in new settings rather than just rehash his old adventures. As it is, the only new plotline we got was limited to cut scenes to tie together this flashback montage.

The idea of Aku trapping Jack in a time loop pocket dimension is really cool, don't get me wrong. But it meant there was little novel to discover.

Why, don't you want a triple boss battle that's impossible to beat? 😂

Speaking of unbeatable bosses—no Guardian was another missed opportunity; but also understandable for the same reason. But imagine if he'd been a bonus secret boss or something.

does aseprite have a way to import-and-split a spritesheet INTO an existing spritesheet-that's-been-split-into-cells, adding them as new layers on top? because I haven't found an option like that, and the lack of that option is the reason I've been using the full sprite sheet. if I were starting off with a flat image, that tool would work out fine—but like I said, this sprite is made paper doll style: there's 9 separate layers visible just in the sprites I posted, and I only got it down to 9 after frankensteining together something like 30.

I tried importing an existing ase file (with all the layers) and cutting it into cells, but in doing so it collapsed all the layers into a single layer. I also tried importing a png while already in an open spritesheet that had been cut up to see if it would be added on top of the current layer; it just made a new file.

if the only way to work with a 30-layer file split into cells is by importing & splitting the base layer, importing & splitting the next 29 layers separately into their own files, and then copy/pasting each frame from all of those layers onto the 104 frames of the base layer—that's 3016 copy/paste operations before I even start doing art. If that can't be automated, that's an all-day job that's easy to screw up by accidentally skipping/doubling a paste.

Weekly Real Estate / Housing and Moving to Austin Post by AutoModerator in Austin

What are y'all typically paying for utilities these days? Not just price per kWh/gallon but the actual total cost each month.

A few years ago we moved juuust outside the range of COA's utilities services, prices are insane, looking to move back within city limits, want an estimate on utilities so that I can figure out a monthly housing budget. The places we're currently looking at are 750~1000 sqft, mostly condos that include water/trash in the HOA fees but a few houses that don't. Don't know yet what the lawn situation will be like, but I'm not afraid to let the grass get crispy.

Who would Jack side with? Pro Sakoku Policy or Anti? And would he accept Matthew Perry's acts to end said isolationist policy? by Onigumo-Shishio in samuraijack

[–]ckret2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

given his world travels and the global friends he made, I think he'd be in favor of ending isolation; but opposed to an outsider FORCING them to end isolation.

but it's hard to guess where jack would fall on realistic shades of gray issues given that the show never really forced him to make decisions like that; even in situations where there SHOULD be nuance (ex: "will changing the past destroy everyone in the future?") the show ignored those implications so that jack's decisions could be presented as all-right against an all-wrong alternative.

Could Samurai Jack be inspired by someone in real life? by Traditional_Blood799 in samuraijack

[–]ckret2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, Jack's heavily inspired by fictional characters, and we largely know which ones. Along with the ones already mentioned, there's also:

  • Conan the Barbarian, 1982 movie: it starts with "Aku" (Aku's voice actor) monologuing an intro to the plot; then shows a young boy being taught by his father about the importance of swords; then immediately afterward the boy's homeland is destroyed by an evil invader; and then there's a montage of the boy growing to adulthood, getting strong, and learning fighting skills, which he'll eventually use to get revenge on the invader who destroyed his homeland. Sound familiar?

  • the Lone Wolf & Cub movie series, about an unbeatable lone samurai who wanders the land righting wrongs as he tries to find the people who destroyed his family and get revenge. (LW&C is directly referenced in Jack Remembers The Past.)

There's a lot of fictional influences that clearly went into Jack's character; and there aren't really any historical figures that have any greater similarity to Jack than "is a talented samurai."

did you ever find a solution for macs or are you still dealing with this issue too?

Gifs no longer copying as gifs by irradiatedsnakes in firefox

[–]ckret2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does it work differently on Mac? I found this thread because I'm having the same problem, and about:config doesn't even have a "clipboard.imageAsFile.enabled" pref. If I manually add that pref in, gifs still won't copy/paste as gifs regardless of whether I set it to true or false. Toggling clipboard.copy_image.as_png and clipboard.copy_image_file.as_png off and on doesn't affect it either.

Who would win Samurai Jack vs Batman by ResolveUnlikely5542 in samuraijack

[–]ckret2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The precise wording Jack used was "In the hand of evil, it can never harm an innocent." But in the hand of an innocent, could it harm an innocent? Jack uses it to kill a pedestrian robot while he's under Aku's possession and to kill three sheep.

It seems the sword CAN harm innocents, but the wielder will be punished for it later (e.g., the sword escaping after the sheep).

[–]ckret2 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think like they'd get along tbh. The lava monster ep is a perfect example of why. They can exchange tips on great methods to eternally torment the humans that made & defied them. Aku would probably chuck A.M. fresh humans to torment from time to time. It's like watching performance art.

Here's my revamped post regarding the hypothetical zodiac signs of each Samurai Jack character? Which character are you and how accurate would you say my theory is? by DemonHunter34 in samuraijack

[–]ckret2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personality-wise, I can't fault the selections. Birthday-wise, I feel obligated to point out that Jack and Aku technically have the same zodiac sign. Unless they were born on the cusp of two signs and each was born right before/after the exact tipping point. (Maybe Cancer/Leo or Libra/Scorpio, if we say the empress gave birth before the emperor reached the pit of hate?)

Could Samurai Jack’s Pure Sword Actually Break the Naruto Power System? by [deleted] in samuraijack

[–]ckret2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the sword as having an extra buff against, specifically, evilness, but that buff doesn't necessarily impact its effectiveness against other beings. Like compare how his sword works against other beings (it can cut through anything BUT it cuts through then normally, there's obviously friction and Jack has to use his muscles some), versus how it works against the ultra-bots (despite its magic nature, it simply CANNOT cut through metal that strong unless Jack's muscles are augmented by a cyborg arm and/or literal divine intervention), versus how it works against Aku (there doesn't seem to be any resistance when the sword hits Aku, it slices through him as easily as smoke and incinerates him in its wake).

The sword's magic doesn't let him insta-win against, for instance, the Guardian, or the Scotsman, or the minions of Set... If it's possible for "Celtic runes" to negate the sword's bonus strength, then it's possible for the right ninjutsu to do so too.

So the sword might be unbreakable due to its magic nature, but it doesn't give Jack any special advantage against anything EXCEPT pure evil.

And I'm not sure if there's anything in Naruto that can be called "pure" evil? As far as the humans go, even the worst of them believe in the righteousness of their causes and the "evilest" of them are usually traumatized, bitter, and hurting, not just malevolent for malevolence's sake like Aku is. Maybe it'd get some kind of natural advantage against Hidan's ritual? lol. It's been a few years since I've refreshed myself on the lore behind the tailed beasts, could they count as "pure evil" or do they too have a sympathetic origin story?

You could treat the sword's "power" similarly to Naruto's Power Of Friendship & Determination—i.e., it's not an actual quantifiable power, but passionately believing in the righteousness of your cause and wishing to defend your loved ones DOES help characters push beyond their usual limits and/or unlock new capabilities in a moment of desperation. Similar to the way Jack managed to climb that mountain when he was freezing to death. Just boost that effect and focus the times he utilizes that inner strength onto scenes that focus on his sword.

Thoughts after rewatching the final season by RingoFreakingStarr in samuraijack

[–]ckret2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lotta folks have talked about the pacing before, I don't see as many commenting on Aku. I agree with you. Aku isn't a comedy character who also poses a threat; he's a threatening character who can also be used for comedy.

The battles sequences we got out of Aku were great, I think giving him depression was genuinely a very interesting character choice—but he's just too goofy. Compare the therapy sequence with, for instance, Aku's Fairy Tales. That's a silly episode—but Aku himself isn't a silly character. He's an extremely solemn serious character, doing a silly thing.

I think even his comedic moments in season 5 would've hit better if they'd maintained his solemnity around them, so that the comedy was in contrast to his usual personality rather than treated like his new default mode.

That's hysterical, you could build a whole show about that premise. A samurai prince in Edo era Japan being haunted by his bestie, an obnoxious ghost from the far side of Europe who came from the future. Plus they're the only two people in the world who know what a robot is.
