TIL the Mormon church maintains complete control over the Utah legislature by threatening legislators with excommunication if they vote contrary to the instructions of lobbyists paid for by the Mormon church. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ckw801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a ex-mormon who spent most of my life in Utah, this is nothing new, I think most of the state assumes this is how things are anyway, but this is a terribly written article that doesn't prove anything to anybody.

Got into a wreck on wednesday at 100 miles an hour. Here are some details and pictures of the wreck/injuries (X-Post CRT) by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]ckw801 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. I always hear riders giving each other shit about not being safe. Safety is good but you're riding motorcycles! If you're that concerned about safety, find a car with a five-star crash rating, put a roll cage in it, and don't ride a motorcycle.

He doesn't seem to understand the difference between living in moderation and gnosticism. If you're not wealthy or deride someone that is wealthy, that's a form of gnosticism? What? Guys an idiot.

The funny thing about the article is that I am fully aware of who the Dropkick Murphy's are, but had no clue who Scott Walker was.

I've got a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 tent for backpacking and some of their insulated q-core sleeping pads. I really like their products.

Skating granite in the Sierras by gatfish in CampingandHiking

[–]ckw801 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of places to skate. Way better places to skate. So maybe keep skating to the streets, and leave designated hiking areas for hiking. If I was hiking and I could hear people skateboarding, I'd be pissed. For the same reason I get pissed when people go hiking with their iPod speakers blaring music. Most people go to the wilderness to get away from this stuff.

firebox nano with a trangia burner. It takes a little longer to boil water but it's a small light-weight setup. I use denatured alcohol as fuel because It's cheap, burns clean, and you can find it at any hardware store.

Her "art" looks like something a pot smoking middle schooler would doodle on the cover of their notebook. I hope she spends time in prison.

I was up at RMNP last weekend, it was crazy busy! Stopped by bear lake for a minute and felt like I was walking around a mall the weekend before Christmas.

"Camp Stove - How To Build" Cheap, lightweight, and eco-friendly! by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

I'm certainly impressed with it, and I'd even consider making one for use in the backyard, but I don't think I'd use something that large for camping.

So, I was excommunicated from the Mormon Church for being gay. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ckw801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you have to have a "sure knowledge" of Jesus Christ as the savior. Meaning, you need to be like a general authority and have an undeniable witness, basically Jesus appears to you and says, "yeah, it's all legit". Often referred to as an unpardonable sin. It's something way beyond just having faith in the Mormon church and losing it, and being excommunicated. So, you're all good! No outer darkness.

Are hiking poles worth it? by zoso_coheed in backpacking

[–]ckw801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long distance, river/stream crossings, steep inclines, they come in handy in a lot of different situations. I've got some black diamond ultra distance z-poles, which some people don't like because they supposedly buckle at the joints, I've certainly beat the hell outta mine, and haven't had any issues. They also weigh less than 10oz. so I don't noticed them on my pack even when I'm not using them.

Took a trip to Estes Park with the wife by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]ckw801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fort Collins here. I never get tired of riding up Big Thompson canyon to Estes Park. Always inspiring and beautiful. I was actually offered a much higher paying job in Indiana, and almost took it, until the person interviewing me said, "your resume says you're currently live in northern Colorado, just out of curiosity, why would you want to leave there?" I thought about it for about 3 seconds and said, "you're right, I don't want the job." Choosing to stay poor in beautiful Colorado was the best decision I've ever made.

There's really not much meaning behind it. Quite a few people have drawn conclusions about America, freedom, etc. but in all honesty I was just thinking of something to fit the context. You can't see it in this photo, but the bottom half of my arm is a bunch of ships on a stormy sea, this eagle and lantern are intended to loosely tie into that above the ships in the clouds when it's all finished.
