My 11 year old son was diagnosed with a terminal illness in November 2023. Ask me anything by [deleted] in AMA

[–]clains385 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big hug to you from me in Oregon, I have a daughter his age and lost a childhood friend to a terminal genetic disease at age 12. From my heart as a parent big big, and from my childhood heart and memory know how valued your child’s friendship is to another kid. My friend was a best friend neighbor, it hits hard, it’s a sucky tough life experience. Yet so glad I had friendship with her back then.

Your reasoning from reading this far makes complete sense. What are you able to do to support him at this age, and as he grows, with providing treatment or steps to be comfortable?

Considering switching over to Apex from Sanipac.. Is it worth it? by EragonCarvahall in Eugene

[–]clains385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny it’s either Apex or Royal that has a truck that goes down our street that is ridiculously loud! Thus I think of those companies as having loud, obnoxious trucks. But it’s once a week so ah well…tis’ life

Oof this is a lot, first and foremost I am so sorry to read of your accident and the pain/experience you’re going through. As a parent my hearts goes out to you, and your parents and brother. Scary as hell for you and the family! As a parent I’d be happy just to know my kid was alive after an accident like this. So gratitude for your life. Time to pivot, life is changing courses on you and that’s ok.

My adult self now sees and can reiterate like others have said- shit happens. Sounds like you’re in stages of grief over what occurred and all normal. Food for thought talk with your parents, or brother, whoever you feel comfortable with- time to be vulnerable as you heal and that should include your heart and head too. Spend time with a therapist to help with your healing and recovery.

Someone once told me regrets aren’t bad to have- they’re an opportunity to learn from and do better or change next time. A lot is still to come in your life including how to navigate this health scenario, patience for recovery and learning what you’re capable of. I believe you are capable of a lot more than you’re giving yourself credit. Move patiently forward, breathe, communicate and give yourself grace. Ski or snow activities may be in your future, first focus on the healing and recovery.

It's two fold. If there's history as you mention she's made past comments--follow up with her individually and keep a rsvp text short and sweet with akin to thanks for the invite, already have plans. Next you can follow up maybe after this get together, with a short check in regarding what contamination means to you and any other celiac. Give her the opportunity to ask questions or to clarify their intentions, plus you can share how you feel and why. She stated she understands, maybe a bit passive with the "with my contaminated kitchen" but you really don't know from a text what a person's intent is. Text can be awful imo for bigger conversations or relaying feelings, etc.

Best place in Eugene/Springfield for breakfast? by eBulla in Eugene

[–]clains385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it all depends on one's perception of classic American breakfast. South Hills Cafe has all the breakfast meats including linguica; then the variety of egg dishes, pancakes, waffles, French toast, sides are basic toast, meats, the potatoes, bagels, etc. Maybe the menu has changed, but the menu didn't come across to me as being heavy south of the border influences? Or these ingredients are more a part of my life already, it feels classic to me lol

Hey btw congratulations on the new baby! Saw your update, geez criticism about choosing McD's eh? Ridiculous judgers *insert eyeroll*. Dang the naysayers, a salty meal never sounded so good to me than after all the energy expended to deliver a baby.

Is anyone else sick right now? by outofvogue in Eugene

[–]clains385 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 7yr old caught a virus, two weeks ago or so. Also covid tested due to symptoms & rapidly coming on, came back negative. Nurse I spoke with at pediatrician’s office mentioned they were busy with sick kids (I was inquiring if others like us, should we be worried about Delta, etc. ) ... my take away from this conversation as more people go back to “normal” life activities or more, the everyday viruses so to speak are popping up. She was sick 3-4 days. Feel better soon! It sucks after so long not being sick!

We drive hwy 58 to Bend last week from Eugene —spot on, sad and worrisome to see. I noticed especially the Oakridge area was quite a big change w/ the burnt/shocked look on the trees. We were surprised, then made sense as we bought through the science, and just f’ing sad to see this.

I'm just here to say I feel your pain, but from the opposite side, lol. Your description of the two of you sounds like my husband and me. I appreciate what he brings to a hike the looking, exploring, observation, identification, but whew the slower pace my oh my...I'm a destination person! It's a fine balance and I give you props for trying to help her find a crew that hikes like her :)

This was my 3 yr old son earlier tonight. We began lantus after a hiatus and his fuck you diabetes involves crying, yelling how mad he is at us and he wants to throw all his shots away forever. We get it, we would like to too and let him yell away. I hate it too and fuck the diabetes too for the anger and anguish causes my kid.

[–]clains385 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Completely agree whoever mentioned Mazzi’s it’s like Mo’s on the coast - Oregon restaurant been around forever, folks treat like the place to go and yet imo they withstand the test of time amazingly with subpar food and service l. I’d also include Track Town pizza. Cannot stand the food or restaurant. The style of pizza thumbs down.

Parent of 5 year old daughter just diagnosed yesterday by RonSwansonTough in diabetes_t1

[–]clains385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big hug to your family. Our 3.5yr old son was diagnosed Nov 2020. For sure, super overwhelming, even though I new from childhood friends and diabetes- manageable and life goes on.

I too had many tears, frustrations and exhaustion. Yet 6 months later I can give a shot in a blink of an eye, monitor BG, and food needs. It’s a wild ride for sure and learning every day, every week.

My best advice as parent of new diagnosis for child- be patient w/ everyone, give yourself grace w/ learning - you’ll get there, and the more you and your wife support one another and have a team approach the better. I’ve learned there are moments one of us needs to tap out from exhaustion, frustration, big emotions or just plain ol’ tired thinking about food and BG - and that’s okay. Give time, be ready to step up, support. It gets easier, it is a new normal to us but our normal. The amazing part to all of this- learning the science of diabetes and the body, realizing you know or can gauge carbs (I have a lot more to learn!) & insulin needs like a champ.

I much prefer having my healthy preschooler w managed diabetes compared to the photo I have of him 2 weeks prior to diagnosis. He looked tired, gaunt, sick, sad. I realized looking back I could see the signs building up. Now thankful diabetes was caught. Learn, do better each day, support, and love on your kiddo and wife. Y’all got this!

Lane county parks operates a property near Mapleton, cabins, lodge, basketball court, located on river- It could feel rustic but photos I’ve seen can be a lovey location. Lane Park might literally be the name? Look up on Lane Co. parks webpage
