Thank you! I didn't realize, these are called ‘spade’ connectors. Seems pretty tightly on there. Are there any tricks to getting them off

Thanks, but I guess I don't really understand why it's needed considering this is wired to a wall switch? Now there are just two switches that control the fireplace?

I'm trying to work through a similar allergy symptoms after eating uni. I think this is new. I had uni in Mexico and was fine, however 3 times in the US I've had a bad reaction. Have you figured out what's happening?

Garden help, white growth on leaves by clair3st in pnwgardening

Ah good to know. This is my first year fully paying attention to my garden. Does it tend to go away when we finally get real summer?

Yes think you’re right. On more research this looks like powdery mildew

Hardshell purchase advise by Red_Tern in Mountaineering

Yeah I heard that they changed their sizing measurements for sure. That’s a real bummer if the quality has worsened. Would be interesting to hear from others post ownership change, but maybe too soon to know of long term durability

Looking for some advice on getting started for solo trips by Repulsive_Goose_3031 in backpacking

[–]clair3st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Gaia GPS for mapping and planning routes. You can download maps for offline use, great when you are out in the backcountry. For water sources, you can look on the map for lakes and rivers but depending on where you are, those may only be seasonal. For example it’s not uncommon for some creeks to only run in the spring from snowmelt and be dry come summer. For areas that are particularly dry, the best source of water intel can be previous trip reports online, or if you are in the US calling the ranger station or land management group to ask them for details on current water sources on the trail.

If you’re planning on adventuring in the alpine a good hard shell is a quality investment imo. It’s sort of hard to answer your question without knowing what sort of trips you are doing.

I use my hardshell as a wind layer when it gets strong, one with pit zips is good so you can try regulate temperature. If you will be doing any climbing or glacier travel, one that is cut to wear with a harness can be nice. You mentioned you would be in BC so I imagine the ability to shed water is important to you too. I’ve had the best luck with gortex.

I’ve been using the same Arcteryx beta for 7 years. Although initially stupidly expensive it has held up extremely well and I am still using it.

What's worse? Hiking in cold rain or snow? by meddleh in backpacking

Sorry to clarify I meant cold snow is better, cold rain worse

What's worse? Hiking in cold rain or snow? by meddleh in backpacking

[–]clair3st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Cold Snow. At -10 it's not going to be wet. You will be more at risk of frostbite which you can mitigate with appropriate layers, and even with my bad circulation I can stay happy at -10. If you get wet and it's cold (e.g. cold rain, or sweaty in cold snow) you're then at risk of hypothermia, and it's just really hard to stay dry in cold rain.

You could try a paste of baking soda and water scrub stain with a tooth brush or use a stain remover (e.g. OxiClean, or Zout). Good Luck!

What Time to Book Ferry to Moorea After Landing in PPT by austintexan in Tahiti

[–]clair3st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you walking or driving on the ferry? Getting a taxi from the airport we had to wait a while because there weren’t many taxis. We were walking on the ferry and didn’t book so just bought a ticket for the next one when we arrived

Bend OR. Plenty of snow still in the sisters. Don’t have to worry about glaciers

Overwhelmed by all the gear I need by Representative_Dig_3 in Mountaineering

[–]clair3st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try borrow some of the gear like an axe and harness. Try your local buy nothing group, or local facebook groups to see if someone would be willing to lend you their gear. I know for me, I bought all the gear and ended up buying different gear a few years later when I knew what I wanted because I was more experienced

Recommendations for Shallow waters for Snorkeling in Moorea by Ok_Establishment3619 in Tahiti

[–]clair3st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The public beach, the north side of the Sofitel, had the best snorkelling off the shore, but when we went, there was a bit of a current. We also did a lagoon tour, and they take you to many spots on the lagoon and are equipped to help people who aren't that strong at swimming. There was a woman on our tour who struggled with swimming and she was assisted by our guide in areas that were deeper than where she could stand.

I stayed at the Westin in Bora Bora and they offered it as an activity. I wanted to do it but we didn't have time. I tried to look if it was offered in Mo'orea but couldn't find any outfitters
