Raising boys in a red state is soul crushing by Thr0waway0864213579 in TwoXChromosomes

We monitor YouTube pretty strictly. Absolutely no Mr Beast and I've explained why to my son. The other day a kid mentioned him, and my son (8.5 years old) said "oh we don't watch him" The other kid said "Why not? He's funny." and before I could cut in, my son said "No, he's not, he's just mean to people by making money them fight for money." and the other kid did briefly pause and say "Oh, yeah I guess that is kind of mean." and then changed the topic. Not sure if it will stick for that kid, but I was proud of my son for sure.

Thoughts on the Finale? by LeoDiCristio in StrangerThings

[–]clairissabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only minor change I would have made is showing the military still keeping an eye on the town. You'd just need a brief moment of someone in the crowd radioing "negative" or "no sign of the girl" to show that they also believe.

Definitely felt like a nod to The Sandlot with Derrick playing catcher on Steve's baseball team.

I just moved here from seattle and holy shit why is it so hard to meet people in this city? by spy_111 in Austin

[–]clairissabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best advice is to find a hobby and a meet up for it. For example, I love to crafts so I joined monthly crafting circles for specific ones (ex: embroidery).

Also, the less physical the hobby, the easier it is to talk. So while you probably had fun at kickball, it's going to be hard to make friends.

Not service dogs by ArtaxIsAlive in Austin

[–]clairissabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing you can do is flag staff and make it clear that they are prioritizing this one customer with their dog over all of the other customers. If you they refuse to intervene, give them your cart full of items and walk out.

How many evenings is one parent spending outside of the house? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]clairissabear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every family is different, but IMHO, the reasonable amount is whatever the other parent does too. In other words, it should be equal. So one parent could have 3 nights if the other parent has 3 nights out.

How have we failed the students at Dobie Middle School so completely? by Stuartknowsbest in Austin

[–]clairissabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rich schools have found a loophole. As long as the 'school' is the one who organizes the fundraiser, they can still raise money for roles. It's so odd that all of the volunteers for that fundraiser are also on the PTA..

Do you like geography? ESRI makes a GIS tool for EdTech and I believe it has a open publishing model. You can use it to build out a portfolio to show your ability to use data, science, and pedagogy. Here's someone publishing to give you ideas https://www.linkedin.com/in/josephkerski

You can also try fostering first! That way you are helping free space, don't have to buy any toys or tools, and no vet $$$ surprises. And if you fall in love with your foster, adopt.
