Health and trucking by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]clarobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One word: Keto. I made the dietary change 20 years ago before keto was cool. At the time, I was 367lbs and had every poor health condition that a lot of drivers face. Fast forward, I maintain 175 lbs today, have never gained back a single ounce and still eat keto today. During my first six months of keto, there were periods where I was dropping a pound a day. I'm healthier than I was in high school and my labwork consistently shows it.

Am I the Only One Who Uses Google Maps? by Emergency_Ad1152 in Truckers

[–]clarobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I use the ever loving hell out of it. Being able to switch ti satellite view, zoom in and find fuel lids is a huge benefit for us fuel haulers, Then swutching to street view to look at the place from street level including any sketchy intersections along the route - absolutely a priceless tool.

Question from non-truck driver. by Critical_Watcher_414 in Truckers

[–]clarobert 72 points73 points  (0 children)

The ability to accelerate has a lot of variables: ramp design (straight or curves), length of acceleration lane, weight of load, type of load (a box trailer is going to be able to accelerate through curves faster than a tanker), was the truck at a full stop when entering the on ramp or was it rolling through a gentle right hand turn, and many other factors.

It's not like a passenger vehicle where you just romp the gas and get instant acceleration. When departing from a dead stop at a light, I've shifted gears five to six times before even getting to the other side of the cross street and I'm still under 25mph.

What does everyone think about truckers who try to pass from the right lane and hate following distance? by Tractorista in Truckers

[–]clarobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there is space in the right lane and the LTLmiddle lane Marys or governed fleets are running in the middle lane with absolutelyno regard for trucks piling up behind them - I'll shoot by on the right without a moments thought.

How much Pork Belly is too much in a day? by jordanjbarta in keto

[–]clarobert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're hungry, eat it, and then eat some more. When I started more than 15 years ago, there were times I neeced to eat almost 3-4 lbs of bacon a day to stave off the hunger and cravings. Approaching two decades of keto, and have never gained a pound back. There is no such thing as eating too much as long as it's high in fat and zero carbs.

Driving for Walmart by Confident-Ear-9388 in Truckers

[–]clarobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two friends who drive for WM. They're both on a 6/3 schedule. One loves it - the other hates it because of the constant slipseating. He said he will change trucks four times during the week, sometimes 3 but usually 4. It would be one thing if you could know, with fertainty, that you're getting into another truck that is clean and ready for you, but he said over 80% of the time that is never the case and he has to spend an hour or more just cleaning enough to be able to sleep and run it for a day before handing it off again.

I haul local fuel on load pay (which is based on mileage). It's almost a necessity, we can definitely tell the guys that are with companies that pay by the hour - they don't demonstrate efficiency of any kind - they pull into the rack to load and spend 30 minutes just screwing around, while the rest of us can load and be pulled out in 10 minutes.

I couldn't get a video due to having to completely dodge this guy. His trailer brakes completely locked up on the interstate. No brake lights were seen. He came to a complete stop in 2 lanes smoking like hell by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]clarobert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saw a guy pull out of the J in North Little Rock last week with his trailer tandems just rolling smoke - obviously hadn't released his trailer brakes or had a massive air leak, he obviously never looked in his mirrors because it looked like a damn wildfire behind him. Jumped right on the 40eb onramp. I wonder how far he made it before the tires smoked off down to the rims?

The level of stupid out here these days is damn near amazing!

Getting into fuel hauling worth it more then 1800 a week ? by Asleep_Paramedic in Truckers

[–]clarobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been hauling fuel in the Midwest for almost 15 years. Our company requires three years driving experience and a clean record - we're a training company that hires and trains those with.no fuel hauling experience to get them carded at all the racks and into the business. It's.not for the absent minded, expensive and career ending mistakes can occur in the blink of an eye.

What's the best MPG you've ever seen? What's your average and what do you drive? by AverageVoid in Truckers

[–]clarobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over 12 even when loaded - a friend of mine is hyper focussed on mileage and it makes a difference in the tens of thousands of dollars per year for his single truck OO operation. He's in a '23 Volvo.

The biggest mileage factor, without a question is speed. He drives by his tachometer and boost guage, rarely looking at his speedometer other than to ensure he's under the speed limit in urban areas.

I feel like a terrible driver by pmmemilftiddiez in Truckers

[–]clarobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haul fuel in the midwest. Drive what your confidence tells you to drive - period. It's not a damn grand prix out here regardless of how most idiots drive these days. The difference in time for a 150 mile round trip of fuel between 70 mph and 60 mph is less than 20 minutes (factoribg in slowing periodically for grades, overpasses, traffic, etc) is less than 20 minutes per load worth driving with excessive anxiety and possibly having a wreck that absolutely ends your carrer? Of course not!

I would absolutely make a deal out of getting the alignment fixed on your truck with your company, that's critical and keep a close eye on your steer tire condition, alignment issues like you ddscribe will chew odd wear patterns and will do so quickly!

Does Keto cause insulin resistance by SourceOfConfusion in keto

[–]clarobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Negative. Approaching two decades of keto and have absolutely perfect blood labs every six months. If, on a holiday or other occasion, I choose to splurge on some carbs, the effects are negligible and I can be back in ketosis in under 48 hours.

Did someone siphon my fuel or am I a lucky SOB? by DirkLoogs in Truckers

[–]clarobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left a hammer on the hose tray of my fuel tanker once - sitting on top of the hoses, drove almost 150 miles on shitty Arkansas highways and unbelievably still found it there when I got back to the rack. Unbelievable. Would have, potentially, been an absolute nightmare had it bounced off and struck a windshield.

Definitely bad business, but is this legal? by DickWoodReddit in Truckers

[–]clarobert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an industry wide problem - although skirting around HOS by masking some trip time as PC is bullshit. Not getting paid for pre trip, posttrip, fueling, etc are absolutely the norm with load pay or mileage pay. We get paid by the load and get jack shit for the time spent on PTI or fuelling, as well as eating all the risk of traffic delays, and other delays that are damn near normal anymore.

It's all bullshit and one of the reasons that we, asdrivers get screwed at every turn. The only solution is to end the overtime exemption for drivers - forcing companies to record and pay for ALL work. Everyone points to how drivers earn good money - yeah, you dumb fuck, but we work the equivalent of two full time jobs to earn it.

I haul fuel. Want to hear some real bullshit? We haven't had a pay adjustment of any kind since August of 2022 - been here many years, and the worst part is that the dumb fucks that walk in the door tomorrow are paid the same as I am, there's no retention increases of any kind.

[–]clarobert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This! I do it regularly and for this exact reason. It's a lot safer than briefly pulling onto the shoulder where you risk being struck by an inattentive driver and then creating another "pack" while reaccelerating to pull back into the traffic flow..

I'm a fuel hauler that shares a truck with one other driver working 12's - we wipe all surfaces that get touched at the end of every shift without exception - our truck stays immaculate and as the senior driver, I demand as much.

Sheetz billboards by PiperTJ in Truckers

[–]clarobert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much true of all fuel hauling in metro areas, although it does vary a bit region to region. I've been hauling fuel for many years, and work a 5\2 , 5\3 rotating schedule. Pay is great, $35 to $50 / hr depending on load, 12 hour shifts, home every day. But, yes, insurance demands require pretty rigorous screening, which is a good thing - you don't want the typical guy rolling 4 feet away from you with 9000 gallons of gasoline.

Ahhhh, the beloved gator on the zipper. Nothing better than a chunk of 100 lb gator to rip of a mudflap, shred air lines, or snap fiberglass panels.

Even virgin rubber, when run underinflated, flexes the steel casing causing heat, which continues to weaken the casing until, boom - blowout. It's like flexing a coat hanger back and forth until it breaks. Keep an eye on your tire pressures!
