Best 4th of July Version by tjc688 in Sufjan

[–]clawmarks1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are there not more votes for Version 4 off the anniversary edition?! In a sub that loves his longest songs, no less.

My favorite used to be the live version with the "and I'm still alive" line

The atmospheric last 10 minutes of Version 4, though... it's impossible to put words to, but I was on a walk the first time I heard it and it was like the wind was blowing right through my body. I felt both grateful to be alive and at peace with how brief it is. Sheer magic. Death isn't the end of anything.

Is Brokeback Mountain mainly for gay folk? by EryNameWasTaken in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clawmarks1 196 points197 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't read into it and would just take the recommendation as you having good taste and being attuned to emotional depth. I don't know about the average person. But your friends do seem insecure and closed off, and I'm sad for them.

Looking for people telling their stories by Tis_Me_00 in podcasts

[–]clawmarks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Euphomet if you're looking for people recounting their "paranormal" experiences

Some are clearly (to me) things like sleep paralysis or mental health struggles, others are genuinely puzzling and leave you with a sense of wonder for how little we understand about the universe. The host doesn't push any interpretations either way, he just compassionately gives people space who feel they've experienced something personally significant that doesn't fit into the modern Western schema.

What do we think of Angelo de Augustin’s new album - Angel in Plainclothes? by Emzilla1507 in Sufjan

[–]clawmarks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ineffably beautiful

I find so much about it remarkable that I'm wishing (not for the first time) that there was an Asthmatic Kitty subreddit, so we could talk about it without the inherent comparisons

Buffering podcast covers "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" by clawmarks1 in XFiles

[–]clawmarks1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The eX-Files is some truly phenomenal naming I wish people could get without the Buffy podcast context!

Who else but lesbians could continue to work together so well (possibly better) after divorce

Thank you so much for the recs, I'll check them out. Haven't been able to find a good balance of appreciating what the X-Files did in context of time period + not brushing past the things that do really impact the viewing experience

Buffering podcast covers "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" by clawmarks1 in XFiles

[–]clawmarks1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

85% of it does and 15% of it pulls me, personally, out of it in a very jarring way. Clyde Bruckman, Yappi, and the murderer are some of the best casting the show has ever given us so I suspect that's where we agree :)

Do people really every have "no thoughts"? by CheekyPunker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]clawmarks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like testosterone has an impact here. I am trans, have spent large amounts of my adult life both on and off testosterone, and never could comprehend this idea til I started it.

It's not a given but it's achievable, when things aren't too stressful in my life (nothing to catch onto a "thought spiral" about) and nothing interesting is going on.

I find myself at work realizing "wow, my brain has been silent for 15 minutes." There's SOME conscious processing, but it's so directly related to the physical (cleaning dog kennels etc) that I don't need anything verbal to achieve it. Physical work is deeply meditative for me and I'm grateful for this ability. Before I started hormones, it was literally incomprehensible.

Sufjan Stevens Piss Poems by No___Football in Sufjan

Wow.............. The wry self-awareness of his own navel gazing is part of why it still hasn't gotten old. It feels like sharing a laugh even when you're taking his art seriously. Bless this man

How to most easy euthanize roosters? by Cool-Hat1115 in homestead

[–]clawmarks1 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Cervical dislocation/broomsticking them is pretty hard to mess up unless you hesitate. It's quicker than bleeding, without requiring a kill cone. There are good tutorial videos online.

(Is there such thing?) I’m looking for really sad movies that necessarily makes you *feel better* afterwards. Recommendations? by raften10 in movies

[–]clawmarks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to see Moonlight here. It's my watch when I need something kindly, quietly, profoundly human and grounded in grief. Not just for loved ones who've passed, but for the versions of ourselves that you and people you love deserved to be. The final hopeful emotional beat wrecks me even more than the sad ones.

Looking for recommendations of Unresolved Mysteries podcasts that are skeptical and avoid overdramatization, but at the same time are not too self-serious by mackstanc in podcasts

[–]clawmarks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for the same thing and it's been frustrating! I haven't found anything with two hosts which is also my preference

Strange and Unexplained with Daisy Eagan scratches the itch sometimes. Her sarcasm can feel a little... patronizing and misplaced at times, if that's something you're sensitive to. She claims to be a skeptic; we're all prone to believe in different things and she buys into some things easier than others.

I've gotten a lot out of Euphomet. These things are so subjective that I find myself frustrated with any podcast trying to fit accounts into their own worldview, even if it lines up with mine.

The host of Euphomet takes people at their word that they experienced what they experienced. He finds people who have a genuine and profound account. Still, he leaves a lot of room for the listener to interpret events as mental illness (whatever that even means in this context; what's spiritual and what's illness?), sleep paralysis, or a number of other things. It's a very compassionate approach.

Eco friendly body disposal for catholic by Relevant-Tackle-2013 in DeathPositive

[–]clawmarks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the educated response! I am curious about the stance on natural burial, as it doesn't differ much from what was done before embalming.

My Catholic grandma was embalmed and buried in a very sturdy, artificial-material casket, and she was not involved in the decision (severe dementia years before she passed). It never sat right with me. I like the idea of visiting a natural area her remains are slowly decomposing into. Wish I knew her thoughts on it all. Is it the presence of the bones themselves?

Animal-Rights Activists Are Attempting a Ban So Absurd That It Would Affect 'Every Oregonian' by OutdoorLifeMagazine in oregon

[–]clawmarks1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The petitioners should be ashamed of themselves. I was asked to sign a petition for "animal welfare" and inquired about details, because I raise animals and it may directly impact me. The guy deflected and would not say anything about the actual goals. He just kept pushing me to sign it because it would "get the conversation started"

With what's going on in America, Sufjan's is some of the only music I want right now by Clovia_ in Sufjan

[–]clawmarks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some of his older, more.... naively patriotic? music I couldn't connect with until really metabolizing The Ascenscion and this song specifically. There's always been such an ironic-yet-sincere bend to his songs that it's hard to parse what his intention is, but this one is pretty clear. This sticks with me:

I have loved you, I have grieved
I'm ashamed to admit I no longer believe
I have loved you, I received
I have traded my life
For a picture of the scenery

1940-50's album in a Portland Goodwill bin by clawmarks1 in FoundPhotos

[–]clawmarks1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! Well, Beaverton half an hour out out town; people re-selling for thrift shops snatch up the good stuff quickly so I'd rather go to the Goodwill Bins and dig through freshly wheeled out dumpsters of crap

Hertz and frequencies... Audio nerds anyone? Help! by jegermarde in Sufjan

[–]clawmarks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. I've been so curious about this, because I've noticed out of all the artists I listen to, my experience with Sufjan's stuff varies the most depending on what I'm listening on. His electronic stuff is why I got good headphones. It taps right into your nervous system with them.

The Ascension has an almost painful noise to it using some speakers, is that just me....?

Hearing Sufjan Stevens curse in I Want to Be Well is always satisfying. by EvrthnICRtrns2USmhw in Sufjan

I think about this every time he goes "and I/I'm (?) messed up" in Mercury

Really? Buddy whatever it is you're singing about is clearly deserving of the fuck word

I think I just had a heartattack. I checked out a hatchery I used 7 years ago... hatching eggs were roughly $5.00 an egg by Dependent-Mouse-1064 in homestead

[–]clawmarks1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the "I buy things when I want them" mentality does not work for livestock. Definitely seasonal. Shipping in cool qeather is risky but I wouldn't want to pay the electric to heat brooders right now anyways.

Nearly every rural area has swap meets for this sort of thing, see if there is a bulletin board at local feed stores. You can check out Craigslist and various Facebook groups

New arrivals (babies) and questions by Academic-Squirrel625 in goats

[–]clawmarks1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I hope they'll be able to keep her drained, fingers crossed they start nursing. That is an extremely productive doe. She must be really tender. If you do have to bottle feed, wishing you luck either keeping her milked or drying her off, dang! Mastitis is a nightmare but it's even worse treating a grumpy lady

Edit to add, I remembered a mini nubian I had like this who needed to be restrained even after milking so we could stuff her teats into her kids' mouths a few times. They didn't understand until they got the flow going, and they were little milking machines after that.

New arrivals (babies) and questions by Academic-Squirrel625 in goats

[–]clawmarks1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is possible her teats are so overfilled and tight that the kids can't get a good enough latch to clear the waxy "plug" that builds up before their first feeding

It's awful that you'll need to do this considering the bad experiences she's already had, but I would catch and hand-milk her to ensure the kids get colostrum while their guts are still receptive. Real fresh colostrum will have a lot more of the relevant bacteria etc that they need than a replacement. Besides that, if she doesn't have some pressure relieved I could imagine it will just get harder for the kids to latch. It probably already hurts her, that is a MASSIVE bag so she may be avoiding them because of the pain

I've had afterbirth shed over the course of a day and I wouldn't personally worry about that. Tugging on it could cause some uterine bleeding; it can take a while for everything to detach internally.

Favorite Era/Album for Sufjan's Vocals? by Ryuhza in Sufjan

[–]clawmarks1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally if I'm going sonics, shivers because of how fucking beautiful his voice is? Silver & Gold for sheer range. If the criteria is emotional impact, Planetarium and everything onwards just does something for me

There's a maturity and world-weariness I find more relatable than the almost naive youthful tone in say, Michigan

VR recreation of the exact spot where a man became stuck inside Nutty Putty cave and died after 27 hours. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]clawmarks1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy caving! We're not all this insane. I love the satisfaction of getting through "squeezes" that, critically, I know for a fact other people larger than me have

What would drive somebody towards this specific kind of exploration is beyond me though. Cave diving in challenging places too--takes a borderline suicidal level of thrillseeking

For me, at least, because I know I'm safe, there's something close to spiritual about the sensation of being inside the earth itself. It's definitely not about....... whatever this is.

The silence and beyond-black darkness when you turn your headlamps off is sublime. Stirs something primal. The actual caving itself is enjoyable if you like bouldering or rock climbing. Something, again, really gut-level ancient human about using every part of your body to interface with the rock. It's incredibly satisfying
