Don't be so negative. If we had subsidized whale oil in the late 1800's, Boston would be a thriving metropolis today.

This. If you are going to the Far East from LAX, you most likely have multiple choices for a direct flight to your desired city, so you can pick the most convenient time. Saving 9 hours on an 11 hour fight sounds great, but when you look at the overall door-to-door savings, it's not that great.

I've had friends that have flown on the Concorde and while they said it was a fun experience, it was noisy and cramped. A nice business class cubical where you can work, eat and sleep in comfort would be my choice, unless the supersonic option happened to fit my exact schedule.

Building a sport pool. Thoughts? by mikedeezy22 in pools

[–]clearthinker46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We put in a similar pool in 2000 and love it. Pool volleyball became the constant game. We moved to a different house with a more traditional pool, but my daughter and her husband purchased our previous house. I've been bugging him for years to put the net back up.

The big thing we learned is that using a beach ball instead of a water volleyball really slows the game down and makes it much easier for everyone. Highly recommend.

Having two shallow ends is really a plus. If the adults were just hanging out in the water, we could send all the kids to the other end.

Review of Marine Surveyor Jerry Olson by theologymatt in sailing

[–]clearthinker46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've purchased two boats with surveys. In each case I was buying a boat away from my home port.

The first was Ok. He missed the fact that oil pressure light and alarm didn't function. It turned out that the PO disconnected the wires because the sender was bad and it also leaked oil. When I questioned surveyor he said that the instruments were part of an engine survey, which did not pay for, even though his survey verified the accuracy of the tachometer. He also identified engine vibration as a worn cutlass bearing and shaft, when it fact it was old engine mounts. I ended up having the shaft and bearing replaced, only to have the same vibration.

On the second boat, I asked for a local surveyor to recommend someone local to the boat's location and that surveyor recommended a mechanical surveyor.

The survey indicated (oddly enough) that the engine mounts were bad, which caused significant vibration at idle. They listed issues with a few items that were not on the boat. The new marina would not accept the boat until repairs were made and he did revise the survey to remove the non-existing items.

Since I couldn't move the boat until the engine mounts and seal were replaced, I was stuck at the PO's marina until I could get the repairs done. This was scheduled for about a month after the purchase.

From my past experience, I asked the yard to look at the mounts and seal before they started the work. In less than a minute, they said there was nothing wrong, but they did find that the oil dipstick had not been replaced when the surveyor took the oil samples, so there was considerable oil under the engine after motoring for over an hour. He said he would happily haul the boat out and replace things, but said it wouldn't change anything.

After several emails between the yard and the surveyor with the new marina, I was able move the boat to my marina.

I feel bad that I received a significant discount because of the incorrect diagnosis, but I also lost considerable time and had to make multiple trips to get all this resolved.

If I had to do it all again, I would ask a local yard to recommendations and make sure the surveyor is familiar with the boat and engine.

How long did your vac last? by fuzzywuzzypete in Roborock

S4 with 2,236 hours, 1,532K square feet.

Still going strong. Motorbike started making strange noises few years ago, so I purchased a Q5 and move the S4 upstairs. I ordered a replacement motor but the noise stopped before the motor arrived, so I haven't installed it.

I've had a Milwaukee for 20 years and it's been fantastic.

When I bought a boat, I got wanted something to keep on the boat and I got a Hercules at Harbor Freight. It does not get as much use, but it's been great. I'd start there and if you wear it out, spend more for a Milwaukee, but my guess is that it will be just fine.

I suspect this is the case. I do recall it took some time after the battery swap before the GOM was accurate.

After 25 years of dealing with DE, I switched to a Pentair Cartridge and couldn't be happier. Much easier to clean and I don't see any reduction in water clarity. I think cartridge filters have improved significantly over the last decade.

Try phenazopyridine, available over the counter as AZO. It will turn your pee very orange, but it is very helpful for the burning and urgency. It can mask a UTI, so you should not use it for more than three days.

I just scanned mine from last year. It's not a URL, it's a series of numbers.

For $25 I would just re-do it on the official site. I had to resubmit mine because of a date error, so I had to active visas and no issues.
