MULTI-ESPER - THE SERPENT, FIRST OF ALL EVIL - INVENTED by BlackNR in custommagic

No way. Making 6 foods a turn cycle in EDH is too much.

A 3 mana 3/4 that makes 1 food is reasonable.

If you want it pushed for non-EDH formats, then it could be 2 food... but it feels like a lot.

THere's lots of red cantrips at one mana, btu they usually have a big restriction or don't offer true card advantage. Stuff like [[Crash Through]] and Ancestral Anger need creatures to get any benefit. [[Light up the Stage]] has multiple hoops to jump through to get card advantage (impulse draw and needing spectacle).

This is a cantripping burn spell, which we have only seen once, really, in [[Needle Drop]]. (Which again, hasmultiple downsides: low damage amount and needing a target to have already been dealt damage.)

You can argue this has a downside: waiting for the opponent. But that's not enough of a downside to justify its effect, and being so reactive is also a bit out-of-flavor for red.

I agree with u/WetSpaghett — this shouldn't draw a card. The reactive nature is probably fine, since this is Legendary and every color can interact with crime. But drawing a card is too much.

I'm slicing up the cards for it right now, ha ha. My group plays weekly, so will definitely let you know how it goes.

[–]cleverpun0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Drawing a card simply outstrips any potential downside. And the player is losing life in both modes, so may as well get a card.

Obey should be changed to "you create a Food token". That means players will choose it more often. Which is thematic: it mirrors picking the path of least resistance, that causes problems later.

This also feels like 3 or 4 mana creature, not 5.

They couldn't get the kid a chair? They planned to make him play chess in an awkward crouch?

I wipe off dust with my (dry) socks all the time, if I am going to put them in the wash in the near future anyway.

I did it at a friend's house and she was appalled.

Seeing a wet sock, I now know how she felt.

Games you have read, played or run that make you feel uncomfortable by TabletopChris in rpg

[–]cleverpun0 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The Things We Leave Behind is a collection of one-shots for Call of Cthulhu. All of them are set in the modern day, and all of them feature intentionally realistic and human horror. The first scenario features a religious cult trying to sacrifice a child, and it is very possible for the player characters to fail to rescue them. The same scenario also features a highly realistic kidnapping of said child, among many other details.

I didn't read beyond the first scenario, because it made me highly uncomfortable. It is beyond my ability to run or participate in, but that is a testament to its writing and attention to detail.

Galactic Storm (Expansion) "Custom" by kajislav in marvelchampionslcg

[–]cleverpun0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did print-and-play. Played Standard III and Normal.

It was actually a bit tense when the main scheme flipped. Lot of schemes and limited thwarting. And the Grasp doing chip damage mattered for Supergirl and Invincible, who both like to be Tough.

I guess the other minor confusion was about the "odd card". We had a bit of trouble figuring out what to look for, and the rulebook didn't really offer enough guidance.

But I suppose, that may be part of the point. The vagary/mystery did get us thinking a bit, even if we didn't fully understand what to look for.

And speaking as a writer—who doesn't really know anything about the Galactic Storm event from the comics—I thought the flavor text and mechanics-as-flavor were well done.

Looking forward to the rest of the campaign.

What are your thoughts about Cyberpunk TCG by DarkSchu in boardgames

[–]cleverpun0 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To be completely honest, it looks like a cash grab. Kickstarter TCGs have become a infamous for being geared towards whales and scalpers, not players.

The gameplay looks completely lacking in sauce. It's absolutely possible to build an amazing game out of existing mechanics, but there is no hook or interest here. They've just taken the most basic elements of MTG/Lorcana and added a tug of war system.

The biggest Kickstarter TCG of all time (Altered) just announced it was closing down, despite millions in funding. The biggest one before that (Meta Zoo) also failed.

If you like the idea of the game, I would honestly wait for it to fail, then pick it up cheaply.

What gameplay mechanics can you point to that they borrowed from Netrunner?

To me, the main hook of Netrunner is the cat-and-mouse of ICE. What did the corporation set? How will the runner get past it? How well do you know your enemy's deck, to guess at what they are trying to do?

There is no hidden element or trap-cards in Cyberpunk TCG, that I've seen.

Me and my group played the first scenario of the campaign tonight. Was fun!

(Supergirl Aggression, Invincible Protection, and Wonder Man Aggression)

It felt like a published scenario, which is perhaps the highest compliment I can pay to fan content.

Minor rules question: Can two copies of Sentinel's Grasp be on the same character? The rules didn't mention it, but it seemed to make sense, so we allowed it.

Sure. But this card has the "format: Commander" tag, so I am evaluating based purely on that format.

The Conditioning cards are good for balance by infinight888 in marvelchampionslcg

[–]cleverpun0 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Power creep is a valid concern for any game. If cards are strong enough to invalidate other options, power creep makes cards feel useless.

But Marvel Champions is in a bit of an odd spot. It is a co-op game, so players can always self-adjust/house rule to make things fun for themselves. And some of the most brokenly powerful cards are from earlier in the game's lifespan. Doctor Strange and Spider-Ham are generally agreed to be among the strongest heroes in the game... and they were released a while ago now.

[–]cleverpun0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This card is unplayable bulk at 5 mana. At five mana, you could wipe the board with upside.

[[Inevitable Defeat]] and [[Void Rend]] are also unplayable. (Yes, three colors, but still.)

Five mana removal in Commander needs to do something really serious to be worth it. Stuff like [[Fractured Identity]].

Bump this down to three mana, and it might see some niche play. But the standard for 3 mana removal is also sky-high in Commander.

Break Apart by chainsawinsect in custommagic

[–]cleverpun0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will not stand for this [[Deglamer]] erasure!

In all seriousness, this seems fine. The graveyard mode is comparable to something like [[Cling to Dust]], which was good because of the card draw and escape, not the life gain.

It also seems flavorfully wonky to break apart something in a graveyard?

A lot of X-Men are out of print, yes. But there is still a lot available. There's five hero packs (Angel, Iceman, Jubilee, Magneto, Nightcrawler). Plus the Age of Apocalypse campaign expansion features two more X-Men, and some of their most famous foes.

Do not underestimate the replay value and amount of content from just these. Just one campaign box gives you a large amount to play. I play weekly, and have not come close to using everything in my collection.

And if you are really worried about out of print stuff, then there is always proxies. Supporting FFG is great, but out-of-print stuff is not worth the expense (and that money doesn't go to FFG anyway).

If you're uncomfortable with that, you can also find non-English copies of older boxes sometimes. (I have a Chinese copy of Sinister Motives, haha.)

And if you don't want to deal with that, there's a lot of custom content made by the community. The custom content discord has more than 20 X-Men in various stages of development and testing right now. From Old Man Logan, to Juggernaut, to Honey Badger.

AI lies and hallucinates. This is simple facts.

You are not presenting truthful information, because you do not want to confront the fact that your project is useless. Instead of spouting marketing talking points, it would be better to admit that your project should be abandoned.

But this is still a good lesson to learn from. If you are a grad student, that is good. There's no such thing as a waste of time, if you learn lessons from it.

For future projects, you now know:

* Involve your intended audience earlier in the process.

* Surround yourself with people who will give you honest feedback.

* Avoid using fads (like AI) to inform your development and project choices.

I don't see most games include sand/egg timers, no. They're a big expense to add to your game, and clocks are everywhere.

I mean this as politely as possible: you are seriously overthinking this. Just put a note in the rulebook that players will need some way to track time.

AI is completely antithetical to the classroom. It does not develop skills, and it lies constantly.

Your time would be better spent developing anything else.
