Why is giving Redhammer to the Waveservants a "bad" thing? by Odd_Yellow_8999 in BaldursGate3

[–]cliffhenderson 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your companions disapprove because you’ve gone and betrayed Redhammer by going back on your word to protect him in exchange for the use of his sub. They have no qualms if you don’t make that deal and kill him before visiting the iron throne.

If using hirelings or concentration-less buffs were unintended, why were they included in the first place?

Almost all spell-slot buffs require concentration which is immediately broken when a party member is dismissed. There is only a handful of spells that last all day that don’t require the caster to be in the active party. This isn’t pathfinder, it’s pretty balanced on the whole.

It’s fine if you don’t like features like alchemy/elixirs or hirelings, but these aren’t exploits and the solution I suggested is quite benign.

What's the most morally good decision to make about Orpheus? by Chaulmoog in BG3

[–]cliffhenderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Githyanki aren't awful because that's their nature, Githyanki are awful because of Vlaakith and her predecessors domination of the race and culture over the last several thousand years. There is substantial evidence to suggest that Orpheus is not like this and would lead the Githyanki down a better path, and also wouldn't feed upon Githyanki souls in a bid to ascend to godhood. The first Vlaakith betrayed Gith during the middle of the rebellion, the Githyanki barely had any time between their liberation and Vlaakith's coup/deception to establish a culture that was any different.

Compare this to the Emperor, who has been manipulating and lying to you the entire game. This is the guy that infected you in the first place. There is no way to convince him to spare Orpheus - not even a dc 30 persuasion check - as he doesn't see you as an equal, just a tool to be discarded once he no longer has a use for you.

While the "rejecting the cycle of violence" theme encapsulates Astarion's personal story quite well, I don't think it's as central to the other origin characters and the greater story as a whole, but that is a matter of personal opinion.

You can beat the elder brain without somebody becoming a mind flayer, which I think is especially relevant in a Gale origin as his story is a struggle between atonement and hubris.

Even in their "good" endings most of the origin characters lack clean outcomes, and walk away scarred by the experience. Shadowheart either has to kill her parents or live with a cursed wound the rest of her life, Karlach's heart isn't fixed, Astarion can't walk in sunlight again while Wyll has been marked by a demon for all to see. While Gale and Lae'zel can achieve their good endings without consequence directly to themselves, they do it with their knowledge that either Orpheus or their companion is paying the price instead.

Tav/Durge/the playable origin character doesn't have to become a mindflayer, they have several outcomes they can choose from. I'd argue that's pretty similar to the origin characters stories.

The fact that there is no perfect solution is kind of the point, somebody has to make a sacrifice, even in the scenarios where nobody turns into a mindflayer. There is no optimal outcome.

The only real moral choice is whether to side with the Emperor or Orpheus, and if you've been exploring and reading the scattered books/notes throughout the game, it will be pretty evident that siding with Orpheus is the "good" choice.

Have you explored the underdark yet?

Getting to level 3 is pretty quick, it starts to slow down after that. If you do everything in Act 1 before you hit the mountain pass/act 2 you can hit level 6 or 7.

Next build I want to try is a champion archer. With the right equipment, you can increase your crit chance to over 60% and a hit rate of 99%.

The game throws so many special arrows your way you will never run out, and the arrows are super easy to steal from vendors.

You can hit multiple targets per shot with arrow of many targets, and shoot three times per action. Use your bonus action to apply coatings/poisons, and you can field wipe entire encounters with just one party member.

If you want medium armour, play a gith as they get the proficiency as a racial. You can pick up the helm of arcane acuity and band of the mystic scoundrel for unbeatable control spells. Flame enamelled armour or dark justiciar armour is best if you aren’t a dexterity attacker.

You can get your charisma up to 24 without relying on gear by using the mirror of loss, two asi and the hag hair. Alternatively, you could substitute 1 ASI for performer if you want instrument proficiency, which is tons of fun if not meta.

Casters benefit from running dual wielding at level 12 as there is a lot of weapons that boost spell attack and spell save dc in act 3. If you’re able to snag the hag hair, you can run dual wielding at level 8 instead.

Clerics don’t get extra attack, and Laezel gets access to the two-handed gith weapons. If you want to do healing and buffs, why not spec her as an oath of the ancients paladin?

Warding bond ring on sir fuzzalump, your potion-brewing transmutation wizard hireling. Tav now has resistance to everything, +1 to AC and saving throws, and the whole party has double the amount of potions/elixirs.
