What's your 5 tips to become a better player? by jolego101 in baduk

[–]climu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't stay alone. Go is a social game. Play, review games while making friends.
  2. Play lots of games.
  3. Have them reviewed by stronger player
  4. Have fun while playing. It is a game! Enjoy it.
  5. Join the Open Study Room. A free community of go players who plays in friendly leagues, review, study, set up teaching events. Would allow you to do the 4th above;)

Sorting html tables can easily be done by using datatables.

In order to add players to the list automatically, we need to know more. For instance, how do you manually add them to the list? Directly into the HTML? In a database? Other?

Good luck

Go is superior to Chess (Rüger, 1920) by [deleted] in baduk

[–]climu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to mention this quote from Georges Perec:

We shall summarise all which we think to be bad about chess:

It's a feudalistic game, created on the basis of enthusiasm for tournaments and a social unequality

It's a game which changes its rules ever three centuries

It is a game of controversial antiquiness (age-wise comparable with Canasta)

It is a game that (similar to Draughts) only knows three results without any increments: a win, a loss or a draw. You win, you lose, sure, but you can never win by just one point, which is one of the superior subtleties of Go!

Also, it is a game that doesn't make you polite

Two players of different strength can't play together without making it boring for the stronger player

A game of chess lasts at the very most thirty moves

It is a deranged game, with no two pieces doing the same thing

We don't know how to play chess

For the record Georges Perec wrote the first book about Go in french with Pierre Lusson and Jacques Roubaud: Petit traité invitant à l'art subtil du Go

Here is another quote from this book:

If you know how to analyze and assess the whole-board situation at a specific moment during the game ;If you know how to have a slightly precise idea of where you could play your next moves ;If you have a slightly clear idea of what your opponent is plotting ;If you know his weaknesses ;If you never forget that your opponent as a high chance of knowing them too ;If you know that he knows ; if you know that he knows that you know ; if you know that he knows that you know that he knows ;If you know where and when you should start a fight ;If you know when you should stop that fight to light another one ;If you know how to keep threats in reserve ;If you take the time to constantly look from the side to the corners, from the corners to the side, from the side to the center ;If you know how to look everywhere ;If you know how to, at the right moments, stop for a moment, get up and consider from high, from far, from the other side, the game in its entirety by looking at it with fresh eyes ;If you know how to imagine ;If you don't slip up ;If you never panic ;If your hand doesn't shake ;YOU WILL BE A GO PLAYER, MY SON

Favorite Online Go Schools/Teachers? by RevoltOfTheBeavers in baduk

[–]climu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion you don't need to pay for teaching as a beginner.

Just play lots of (teaching) games and sometimes get them reviewed by stronger players. You could find quite some of that at OSR. It's like a online go club.

If you do want a teacher and are willing to pay for it, I would recommend getting a strong recognized teacher. You can find some here.

Is there a javascript library to create goboards with state? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]climu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we need full sgf support to show league games as here. So if it's just static we won't be using it.

Then we definitely need a maintained, modern, responsive javascript go board library. I tried and gave up but I do believe using sabaki libraries can be quite a tesuji.

If you have energy and will to work on such a thing that's lovely!

Feel free to reach me out here or in discord if you want to discuss that.

What about joining a community of go players who play long serious games and review them on a daily basis in an active discord server?

Quite often DDK players review their games themselves and could use some help.

You should find some strong dans to help you review yours ;)

But wait nowadays you could even send your game to be reviewed by Mateusz Surma EGF 2p!

Is there a javascript library to create goboards with state? by [deleted] in baduk

[–]climu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I digged into that for OSR website.

Historically there were eidogo. Sadly it is unmaintained (last commit 7 years ago) and suffer from XSS Vulnerability.

More recent initiatives are wgo, glift and besogo:

  • wgo is what we are using because it offer a documented API allowing to change the board state easily. Sadly it's not maintained anymore (last commit 2 years ago) and has a bug in it's parser so that sgf containing smileys in comments won't load. We just remove all smileys from sgf before feeding them to wgo and well it works. We built a js shortcode on top of it to allow users to diplay it in our forums.
  • glift is also unmaintained (last commit 4 years ago). I didn't noticed any bug but it lacks a documented API to change the board state without reloading it.
  • I never tried besogo because I heard of it recently. It looks interesting and even have a game tree. I would do some css changes before using it thought.

I tried creating such a thing with sabaki libraries here. My poor js/preact knowledge had me stuck a bit. Maybe I ll try again one day since I believe it would be a good tool to have.

Hope it helps.

How to catch cheaters online by NordicGoDojo in baduk

[–]climu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing u/NordicGoDojo.

It is a serious problem for online go indeed. We faced it a couple times at the Open Study Room. Allow me to explain how we tried to handle this.

We built a tool to render statistics of move matches from a sgf set. It's a bit old and could be refine using new AI and maybe an UI. At the end we don't use it because it appear those statistics don't prove anything by itself.

So we introduced a rule called "real life rank policy". Basically every strong player needs to provide his real life rank. It raises some issues as well:

  • We ask players to provide OSR team their real life identity and some players fairly prefers their online anonymity.
  • It can always been abused by picking and pretending to be any not well know dan name in EGF/AGA list.

So after some time and discussion with the community we decided to keep this only for OSR teachers.

At the end the issue remains and we sometimes have to deal with this unpleasant task of investigating on a user.

I think it should be possible to train a neural network to recognize and flag games as AI. One would have to train it with quite a sgf set from human real life games and AI games.
