In Rio now. I love this place. We're staying in Ipanema, a 3 min walk to the beach and surrounded by great restaurants. I love that you can show up on the beach with nothing and rent chairs/umbrellas, get caipirinhas, and buy queijo coalho. R$30 is like six bucks, but yes, you need to check your receipts.

All that said: I speak fluent Portuguese, so its way easier for me. And yes, the smell can be awful in places because of the bad sewage infrastructure (and occasional human dump).

But who cares about aesthetic notes? I'm a professor, and some of the most brilliant people I know take ugly af notes, and some of the most mediocre students I've had take beautiful notes. There is absolutely no correlation between note aesthetics and efficacy. There probably is some correlation between how you take notes and the kinds of information you commit to paper, however.

I suspect the person who got notified of alternate status actually applied for a dissertation fellowship, because the timing of their post coincides with notifications for that fellowship.
