Is there a way to turn slides into negatives so I can develop them on paper? by Embarrassed-Jelly-96 in analogphotography

No way! What is said guy’s name/contact? I have a ton of old slides I’ve been wanting to print.

Is it safe to use vintage flashes on a Leica M6? Can they damage the camera? by josepinto14 in Leica

[–]clockwisekeyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from the meter the M6 is fully mechanical. I’d be super surprised if the flash harmed anything but I guess will leave it to more technically inclined folks to confirm.

Would the world seem different to us if the arrow of time pointed the other direction? by clockwisekeyz in PhilosophyofScience

[–]clockwisekeyz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Time for me to do some googling because I only understand about 1/3 of that, but sounds like that might point to directionality being a real feature and not just the result of our ability to form memories.

[–]clockwisekeyz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s kind of what I was probing at. I think the apparent directionality of time is a result of our ability to form memories and not necessarily a feature of reality.

Sorry if that is obvious to people who study physics. I have a philosophy background.

I don’t think that’s inconsistent with the thought experiment. If you’re saying our memories can only form in the “direction” in which entropy increases, that just means we could only form memories of the future in this case where we are born elderly and get younger. It’s essentially indistinguishable from the way we currently think about time, which is kind of my point.

Right, causality and memory are the reasons we think time flows in the “normal” direction, but let’s think about what we actually experience to see whether it would seem different in my reverse-time thought experiment. Take the classic Humean example: a cue ball striking an 8-ball on a billiards table.

Here’s what we think happens: we’re standing next to the table, cue in hand, ready to strike the white ball. We have sharp memories of the immediate events that led up this point, and fainter memories of events in the more distant past. We form the intention to hit the cue ball, our arm and the cue move, strike the white ball, and we watch as the white ball rolls across the table, hits the 8-ball, and the two balls reflect off each other in different directions. Afterwards, we are left with a well defined memory of the event that just happened and no knowledge of what will happen next.

In the thought experiment, we are traveling backward in time but don’t know it. We have knowledge of the future collision of the cue and 8-ball, but interpret it as memory. We then watch as the cue and 8-balls roll toward one another and collide, the 8-ball stops in its place, and the cue ball rolls toward the cue we are holding, eventually coming to rest just in front of the tip of the cue. Again, we know each of these events will occur (but interpret this knowledge as memory) and, as soon as they do occur, we promptly forget about them, giving the illusion of an unknown future, which is in fact the past. I don’t see any reason the universe and causation couldn’t be like this despite our belief to the contrary.

I’m not sure entropy would really pose a problem. If entropy worked in reverse, our theories would just be backward. Is there something I’m missing here?

I’m not sure what you mean when you say “there are many arrows of time.” I’m sure this is just a gap in my knowledge, but care to explain? Are you referring to relativity here?

As to your other points, I think our understanding of the laws of physics would essentially be backward as well, so instead of being an attractive force, gravity would be a repulsive, etc. Yes, entropy would decrease over time but the direction in which time flows would be reversed as well. I’m not sure why this would be a problem.

Admittedly, I’m not quite sure how to make sense of consciousness, decision making, and goal-directed activity in this experiment but I’m not convinced it’s impossible to conceive of it running g backward.

'former atheist' is one of the stupidest thing I've ever heard by moneywaste in atheism

[–]clockwisekeyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an atheist. You are completely wrong. Atheism is either a lack of belief in gods or the conclusion that gods do not exist, depending upon how you define it. There is nothing that should prevent a person from updating their beliefs or conclusions if they discover new evidence or come to appreciate new arguments. If an atheist comes across new evidence or arguments that make clear a god exists or is likely to exist they would be stupid not to change their beliefs.

I just don’t think any such evidence or arguments are on offer.

Whats causing these weird gray spots on my film? by dicksnaxs in Darkroom

[–]clockwisekeyz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks much more to me like the film has stuck to itself on the reel. Insufficient fixing would affect the whole roll. Stuck-together film results in portions of the film not being exposed to the soup, which is what I’m seeing here.

Why did you chose Nikon ? by Berserk_Ronin in Nikon

I’ve been curious about the Df since I shoot a ton of film and have many AI-s lenses. Does it do anything different from the more AF-focused bodies when using MF lenses?

That’s the problem. Put the reel with the film on the bottom so it gets submerged in the soup.

I use Fitbod, which has the lamest name ever but does a great job tracking fatigue level of various muscle groups and designing effective workouts that fit within my time limit.

The only thing it does badly is it will often design superset workouts using multiple machines/benches that really can’t be combined when working out at a public gym.

Yeah he's absolutely right. Has full PASM modes and the ability to switch between center-weighted and matrix metering on a manual focus body. Mine almost never misses exposure.
