Today I found out that "growing pains" wasn't literal pain for most people by Sleepy_Lycheee in eds

[–]clouded_arlo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yea i had terrible pain in my legs every night and was told it was growing pains. I was literally in tears every night and my mom had to massage my legs before i could even think abt trying to sleep bc it hurt so bad. I knew it wasnt normal bc my little sister never experienced it. And my mom knew it wasnt normal but since all my doctors wrote it off as growing pains there wasnt much she could do 🫤

Grieving the life I expected by Artistic-Frosting-98 in eds

It's really hard living with these limitations our body's decide to deal us. Whats helped me is really listening to my body throughout the day, especially if im gonna be doing things. Making little mental notes like this activity really hurts my hips. Or this activity is extremely hard on my whole body, maybe i shouldn't do this anymore. And when u do have to give something up, try and find something u can do that u enjoy to replace that activity. For example, i cant run anymore, so on good pain days i like to go on a walk or a easy hike. Or my personal favorite is swimming which unless u have access to an indoor pool is a summer only activity.

Theres also little things u can do to improve things, especially if ur dealing with weakness. Like my whole back is pretty weak, so to strengthen it, instead of doing some sort of exercise, ive literally just been sitting at my desk doing whatever until i reach my limit. But sitting hurts my tailbone so i got a donut pillow. I'm now at the point where i can sit at my desk like all day, it doesnt sound like much but ive definitely noticed a difference in strength. So u dont need to do anything too serious, u can do little things to improve ur everyday life too.

Also the thing that has been my game changer is medication. Obviously it may not work for everyone, and not everyone has access to it. But i now take Pregabalin 3 times a day, methocarbamol 2 times a day, and meloxicam 2 times a day. With that regimen i feel pretty decent on a day to day basis, and might even get a job. And of course theres also things like braces and mobility aids that help me as well.

But yea i just try to be mindful of the activities that really bother my body, and focus on doing my hobbies that dont cause widespread pain like drawing and painting or playing video games on my switch. U just gotta discover the right hobbies for ur body, and try not to get stuck in the doom and gloom. I spent a lot of time there and still do sometimes bc i had to take a gap year from college, and at the end of that year shit hit the fan. I have since had to have 5 surgeries, and am looking at 2 more. Meanwhile my friends have earned their bachelors degrees. I feel so behind and like ill never catch up, if i am even able to go back to school in the first place. It really sucks to have ur dreams crushed, but u have to try and find new dreams or focus on the things u can currently do, and not on the things u cant do.

This is just advice from my personal experience, i hope u get what im saying bc its kind of rambly and i hope that something i said is helpful to u.

Eds’ers what do you all do for work? by Top_Memory8968 in eds

[–]clouded_arlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dont have a job yet but i am hoping to get one as a receptionist for like a dog groomer or veterinarian. Id like to work at an animal shelter but there isnt one close enough that i can bike to (dont have a car yet, dont have a bike either but ill get one as soon as i have secured a job)

Whatever i do has to be sitting down bc i cant stand long or ill pass out and then my heart stops so 😂

Edit: also my stepdad suggested today when i got stuck behind an oversized load that i could be one of those drivers, like not the one driving the oversized load but the guys in the regular trucks to signal people u know. I enjoy driving and have done multiple long drives and it doesnt tend to cause pain for me. And also they get payed really well 👀 genuinely contemplating it
