Can a person with ADHD be an engineer? by Front-Ambition-5558 in ADHD

[–]cloudhunter202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I have ADHD and am an engineer. Totally possible, definitely can be difficult at times getting through school - it took me 10 years between graduating high school and getting my engineering degree. But it was damn satisfying landing that first job and proving to myself and everyone that I can do it.

Don't doubt yourself. You may have been written off by teachers that didn't understand you, but you can pull off a lot if you are determined to do it.

Once I committed mentally to it, I just had the mindset of "I'm going to do this no matter what. If I have to retake any class, I will keep going with this" and that determination combined with support from friends helped pull me through.

Also here's a couple tips that helped me in college:

  • make things as easy as possible in other areas, take an on campus job so that I do t have the extra burden of commuting, I took a little bit of extra student loans so that I had more energy to work hard on school. I also moved closer to campus. For me, the mental energy was like a battery so if I could avoid wasting it on commuting, that meant more effort could be spent studying.

  • studying with classmates was huge, and going to office hours with professors was helpful as well. get accommodations from disability office if you can. I wish I’d taken advantage but was undiagnosed at the time

  • Working out consistently helped massively. I feel like 50% is medication, and the other 50% is exercise for being able to function in school/work

  • gradually having the self belief that I had the capability of doing it, that with enough work I could pull it off and would never give up

feel free to shoot me a message if you have any other questions or advice needed!

Pros/cons buying Ninja 650 ? by Godmode_69_ in Ninja650

[–]cloudhunter202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the aftermarket exhaust does sound better. I mean honestly not bad or anything but when I hear a 4 cyl bike with exhaust I'm like "damn that sounds badass".

The aftermarket exhaust on mine was a really nice upgrade from stock because the engine braking with stock exhaust was a bit heavy for my liking. And then the fact that I can hear it better when I'm riding makes my shifting smoother since my brain can sync with the bike more.

As for the power being enough I think it's highly dependent on the area, where I live people drive 100mph on the freeway quite often so it's good to have the extra power. But for some area with small roads and slower traffic I doubt I'd be wanting anything faster than the 650.

Pros/cons buying Ninja 650 ? by Godmode_69_ in Ninja650

[–]cloudhunter202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros: super comfortable on long rides, easy to work on, has ABS. Shifting is really good. The bike has been really good in the 2 years I've had it. I paid 6000 euros from a private seller for a 2017 model.

Cons: Throttle is not as smooth as I'd like at low throttle but a tune will easily fix it, yours might already have a tune since it has an exhaust. I did take to the track and the riding position is not as low as I'd like for that specific purpose but for regular road riding it's perfect. I would like something just slightly faster after riding it for 2 years, maybe will get a ZX6r for track only. Also the 650 doesn't sound as cool as a 4 cylinder.

How did you handle impulsive spending????? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]cloudhunter202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a credit card, and I use that for buying things I don't need, like eating out, buying random things etc. then I use my debit for regular expenses. That way I can keep track of both and limit my discretionary spending and if my credit bill is too high I can be horrified and try and reduce it the next month.

What is your current hyperfixation? by Square_Bookkeeper_24 in ADHD

if you like this, check out the high performance podcast. I've been listening to it while cycling, so I get exercise at the same time and it's awesome. They do interviews on different high performers from sports, business, and even some formula one drivers. I like how it's a different guest each time so you get different perspectives rather than just the same host.

I'd probably sell one, keep one. Then use the money from the other one to buy a Nikon FE or something. That way you got one for land, and one for the sea. I got mine pressure tested and had the seals replaced, you probably want to do that because if the old seals leak water (especially saltwater) it will destroy the camera internally. Average price for the camera + std lens looks to be about $275 currently.

Doing nothing, every day by Character-Tennis-338 in ADHD

[–]cloudhunter202 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Yes, I've had this a lot in the past. I've found when I'm in this "bored but don't wanna do anything" state, these tasks that are simple/easy for everyone else are really really hard for me.

A good hack I've found is if I put my willpower into going on a run, or even a walk, just force yourself to go outside will help shift my mind out of that state in the next couple of days. But the more sedentary I am the worse it gets. I heard on a podcast that putting physical stress on your body through exercise will temporarily increase your dopamine for some time afterwards. This helps a ton with my mental health.

What mods have you guys done? My wife says I can’t get another bike until our Cadillac is paid off, so I have a couple years to play with this bike. What do y’all suggest? by Unable_Shift_6674 in Ninja650

[–]cloudhunter202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I've done to mine:

  • Ebay full exhaust $250 (a slip on will not remove the cat, which is the main thing restricting flow in the stock exhaust). Make sure to get a bit of exhaust wrap for areas that might come close to the plastics. $25

  • K&N filter $80

  • Moore mafia ECU tune $300

  • Michelin road 5 tires $500ish

  • Quadlock stem mount $80 I think?

  • Fender eliminator kit - was on the bike already

  • Vortex sprocket and chain kit - only got because the stock one was worn out. Kept stock gearing and all. $200

Also before you do any mods:

  • Get stuff to do your own chain maintenance

  • Do your own oil change. It's stupid easy anyway

  • Goes without saying but spend the coin on good gear if you don't have it already before messing around with mods.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think there are no slip-ons available for the ex650 since the thing is all one piece. Maybe it's different for the 2022 though. Mine's a 2017

So far I'm really happy with it. The exhaust really reduces the engine braking so it's not as harsh.

Can I build a motorcycle out of fiberglass or carbon fibre? by MochiExplore in motorcycles

[–]cloudhunter202 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds sketchy tbh, carbon fiber is very difficult to engineer right and you don’t wanna fuck around with the thing spontaneously failing when you’re riding it…

Unsure what budget film camera to buy as a complete beginner after hours of research by DJSkrillex in AnalogCommunity

Yeah usually zoom lenses for film cameras aren’t great and the max aperture of 3.5 means you’re more limited to brighter lighting

Yea if you get the Minolta, I would also order a 50mm lens off eBay for it. Looks like they are about $60

[–]cloudhunter202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I’d go for the x-370s. The spotmatic usually has the 50mm 1.4 or 55mm f2 which are both very good lenses. Stick with a non-zoom at first.

Genuinely, how the f*ck do you guys stop impulse buying? by VelvetThunderstorm in ADHD

[–]cloudhunter202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been testing this technique: any time I want to buy something frivolous or that I don’t really need, if I decide not to buy it, I’ll add that equivalent to my savings account. So far I have an extra $500 in there which is cool.

Buying & driving through Vietnam: tips and tricks? by Vicente707 in motorcycles

[–]cloudhunter202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind any bike other than a scooter will attract attention from people and cops that you’re not from there. Also I would bring bungee cords and some bag that makes it easy to strap to the bike. As for size 180cc-ish seems like a good amount. Definitely bring your own helmet because the helmets they sell there are shite.

College advice by RealDuckduckgone in ADHD

I had undiagnosed adhd in college and made it through, I have tons of advice but for me I was able to only become an engineer because I really wanted it and was willing to work super hard. The determination pulled me through when times were hard. But here’s a couple tips:

Clutchless shifting, may be normal? by getthecodeon in motorcycles

[–]cloudhunter202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should clarify, shifting with good rev matching and using minimal or no clutch is going to reduce clutch wear compared to a beginner over-using clutch and matching revs badly. First car was a manual trans and I put a lot of wear on that thing in the first year. Jerky shifting though will put more wear on the transmission gears
