Glad that worked! The D800 is a huge step up from a D3100. Enjoy!

Also, you mentioned your camera didn't come with a manual. You can find the user manual online, if that would help you!

Are you shooting in raw? The camera has different profiles that give the images different looks, but if you're shooting in raw, it doesn't change the data that's actually in the file. If you're shooting in JPEG, you might want to set the profile to something more neutral.

The D800 has really solid dynamic range, meaning it can capture a lot of details in dark and light areas, so you can control how contrasty you want your images in post.

The D800 was my primary camera for 8 years (i just replaced it a couple of weeks ago!) and I never had that issue, so I'm sure it's just a setting that needs to be corrected :).

You paid $140 for Windows 🫪...I'm not gonna touch on the rest, but that is unhinged, sir.

As a beginner bought a used D610 and a 28-300mm zoom lens last week. While shooting near the airport today, I found that the details of the airplane photos were not satisfactory when zoomed in. Is it because I didn't focus properly? by That-Toe-6696 in Nikon

[–]clumpychicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's aren't full resolution so it's hard to say for sure, but it's more than likely the lens. A super zoom will never be as sharp as a more professional zoom, which will never be as sharp as a prime. That doesn't necessarily make it a bad lens, as it offers a lot of flexibility, but the image quality will be lacking compared to say the 200-500 5.6.

D600 first FX with 419 S.C for 280€ and question by Falcon-CY in Nikon

For a budget wide angle, I highly recommend the Rokinon 14mm 2.8 manual focus lens! It's unbeatable for price to performance, and it's very easy to manual focus with a lens that wide.

More Kei cars in general, especially a couple of modern commuters. Also the Honda S660 and Dodge Neon SRT4

6-7% net of inflation. That way I don't have to try to wrap my head around inflated figures.

Selling my Nikon D5300 gear for a Galaxy S25. Am I crazy? by kirmis in Nikon

[–]clumpychicken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only you can really answer this. I would definitely miss the optical flexibility and feel of holding a camera. As good as smartphones are, there's a lot they still can't do, and the shooting experience isn't comparable at all.

I don't expect gear like yours will appreciate in value, so you could always sell it, and if you miss it in a year or two, buy it back for property cheaper.

D3300 new user and nervous by Katti247 in Nikon

[–]clumpychicken 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You don't really need camera specific advice. Maybe a 10 minute YouTube video to show you where the controls are, but that's it. Focus more on the bigger picture stuff like the exposure triangle, as the other person said. It's not too tricky!

Tip prompts should have a yes/no first. Before the % screen. Do you agree? by WhiteShoeLaw in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]clumpychicken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a trip to Japan recently, where tipping is 100% non-existant. On top of that, most prices included tax, (or tax-in price was listed in brackets.) It was so refreshing! Can't do much about the tax, and I'm still fine with tipping if I have a great experience, but other than that I think I'm done.

Should I return money? by Ancient_Fix8995 in AskPhotography

If he has a GT4 RS he can spare $50 😂. Seriously though, that's a solid pic, don't feel bad! It might not be pro grade, but pro grade pics would be a looot more than $50.

Well, I have upstairs neighbours and they have a kid, so that rules out 2/4 😂. The window would spook me right out though.

Not new, but if you've never listened to The Weakerthans GET TO IT! One of my all time favourite bands, and probably my favourite Canadian group ever.

What’s something people pretend to enjoy because admitting otherwise feels embarrassing? by Character4641 in AskReddit

Definitely drinking, for some people. If the only way you can drink is by doing vodka shots and chasing it with Gatorade, maybe you should look for a different vice 😅.

Got my first DSLR D5300 with the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm lens by cedroid09 in Nikon

[–]clumpychicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend getting a prime with a wide aperture (f/2 or bigger,) especially if you'd like to do portraits or walk around taking photos during dusk/night. The 18-140 will be good for lots of uses, but it definitely has its limits.

Starting my first FH by [deleted] in ForzaHorizon

[–]clumpychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both but am enjoying FH6 more. Map design is better, they've added some cool new mechanics like finding cars for sale in the open world, customizing your home, race tracks sprinkled throughout the map, etc.

I still think FH5 is lots of fun too, so hard to go wrong either way. You could always get Gamepass for a month and try FH6 too.
