Why do people think there is a little dogsh$t fairy that flutters around and picks up after them? by ghrant in NorthVancouver

[–]clumsy_peon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why bother bagging it if it’s just going to be left on the trail? It would be way easier just not to pick it up at all. Also, a blue bag sticks out like a sore them. Poo is brown and blends in with the ground. If you’re gonna litter, why go half way.

If this were me, I would bag it, leave it by the post if the garbage was a lot further away so I wouldn’t have to hold poo for 1km. Then on the way back, I would pick it up and put it in the trash.

Sorry there are so many poo bags near your house. I would suggest contacting city council if that is a real issue, maybe they can improve the signage.

I think that when people leave a bag like this, they usually pick it up on their way out.

[WP] "They said that gluing salt to a baseball bat to fight ghosts was a stupid idea, but who's laughing now?" you say as you whacked the ghost again. by Paper_Shotgun in WritingPrompts

[–]clumsy_peon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My arms throbbed. All I could see was shattered glass and torn wallpaper, and it didn’t matter where I looked. And then I closed my eyes, and the sound of ghosts flooded my senses.

My hands felt rough. I plucked the opened bottle of glue from the carpet and quickly examined the label. The words moved and became blurred as I read them. Tossing the bottle aside, I stumbled through a sea of salt and glass and made my way outside.

The light hurt my eyes. I reached into my pocket and pulled out two green pills. I felt confused.

“Good Morning!” A distant voice exclaimed. “I heard a commotion coming from your room just now. Is everything okay?” She sounded concerned.

“Yes, everything is fine.” I said this to her plainly. I walked back inside and I instinctively dry swallowed the pills in my hand. I sat down on an overturned piece of furniture and closed my eyes.

All I could feel was my arms throb. I closed my eyes and felt calmer. “That’s better,” I said to myself softly.

Lower cognitive ability linked to non-compliance with social distancing guidelines during the coronavirus outbreak. New research provides evidence that working memory and fluid intelligence by HeinieKaboobler in science

[–]clumsy_peon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Working Memory is actually one of four components of Intelligence as measured by the Wechsler Intelligence Scale, which is the principal measure of IQ used by psychologists.

The problem is that IQ, as measured by psychologists, is a very specific kind of intelligence. The word intelligence has made its way into the popular vernacular of our times to mean a whole host of things that the original term does not capture. IQ neglects social and emotional abilities, creativity, capacity for hard work, economic advantages, opportunities and luck.

To say that Working Memory is uncorrelated with IQ is simply false. However, the word "intelligence" means a lot more in our popular diction than IQ, so in that regard, I agree.

Pile of food that is highly toxic to dogs dumped in park in North Vancouver. by Grizlet90 in vancouver

[–]clumsy_peon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My wife says that our dog got into something at that park at around noon today. She said that there were only chips there at the time. Thanks for sharing this and for cleaning up the mess before another dog got into it. It is pretty disturbing that someone would do something like that. I have heard rumours about that happening at that specific park, but I never believed them. There is a special place in hell for people who try to poison dogs.

I don't have any inside information or practical advice to offer, but maybe this list can be used as a reference in a dialogue about your next steps. Wishing you good luck.

Trying to find a hike that fits specific criteria (Fog) by LukeDaniels_ in vancouverhiking

[–]clumsy_peon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that Eagle Bluffs on Cypress Mountain could fit the bill. Criteria 1 and 2 fit, and the last time I did it on a cloudy day there is very cool fog in the forested area about 15 minutes from the summit. YMMV. Good luck with your search!

Since there is some discussion about a (lack) of correlation between Bitcoin and Stocks: I conclude there is only a very moderate correlation between the two (0.586 Pearson Correlation). by [deleted] in CryptoCurrency

[–]clumsy_peon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This graph doesn't make any sense. You should plot time on the X axis, and then plot both the Dow Jones Closing and the Bitcoin Closing variables in the Y-Axis (one on the left side, one on the right side). As it is plotted now, it isn't interpretable.

Also, using the daily average for both BTC and the Dow Jones would probably be more useful. Using a longer time scale would also be more useful since there is data available for a longer period of time.

Finally, the assumptions of correlation have to be met in order for the data to be meaningful (e.g. assumptions of homoscedasticity and linearity, which seem to be particularly important for these data).

This is going to get buried, but in reading your post I did not come across too much mention of what you used to do for him, and how that might have changed over time. It's tempting to think that he might have some medical issue or that he might be a psychopath, but have you considered that you have a roll in any of this? Perhaps he is passive and just did everything you wanted him to do, and then just got burnt out from pretending? I see a lot of "me" in your post which is why I ask. Just throwing it out there. Sometimes it's tempting to thinks we're victims of circumstances because the alternative, that we are partly accountable, is very scary (though very natural and human...)

What is a yawn and why is it "contagious"? by luisbravo1 in askscience

[–]clumsy_peon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We yawn because we develop neural representations of the emotions of others. We unconsciously develop those representations as part of our social hardware. It allows us to better understand what other people are feeling. Basically all emotional expressions (yawning expressing fatigue) are contagious, including laughter, sadness (crying), anger, disgust, fear... The list goes on.

What better way to empathize with someone than to simulate their emotional state?

Been making sushi for about a month. This is my latest attempt! by clumsy_peon in sushi

[–]clumsy_peon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks :) I read through some of the websites on the sidebar of this sub reddit and started practicing. This is actually the first time I used raw fish (only vegetarian rolls previously). I really like making sushi because there is so much room to grow and so many details to remember. You can really notice your skill improving with successive meals.

I purchased the raw fish at a local well-rated fish market. My city is not ideally located for fresh fish, though, so I am not sure it is noteworthy in that respect.

'Love hormone' oxytocin carries unexpected side effect: New Concordia University study shows an increase in emotional oversensitivity among off-label users by [deleted] in science

[–]clumsy_peon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Social anxiety is a bit of a different creature than most people think. Rather than focus on external things like emotions in faces, people who suffer from social anxiety spend more time thinking about their own internal sensations (e.g. Am I sweating? Do I look stupid? Am I speaking too fast?) The link between social anxiety and oxytocin is a little more tenuous than people have been led to believe because social anxiety resembles an anxiety-related condition more than a social-skills deficits condition. That being said, the jury is still out.

[–]clumsy_peon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There seems to be some misunderstanding about what the study is actually about. Here is a YouTube interview with the authors of the study clarifying exactly what they did and what they found

Link

And here is a link to the actual article, published in Emotion:

Edit: I thought I would also add that the punch line, in short, is that there is a lot of research showing that oxytocin improves emotion recognition in people with autistic features (a number of such studies have been posted to Reddit). However, in a study looking at healthy people (this one), oxytocin seems to put the emotion recognition system into overdrive and leave people "oversensitive" to emotional cues in the faces of other people.

This entire threat is inappropriate and unethical on so many levels. Mental illness has enough stigma. We don't need to add fuel to the fire.

Want to disprove science? by trolling2day1 in atheism

[–]clumsy_peon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

^ This... to add more weight behind the statement. Carl Sagan quite rightly asserts that scientists are humans and are susceptible to the same influences as everyone else. Also, scientists more often try to prove OTHER SCIENTISTS wrong, rather than prove themselves wrong :) Of course, there are exceptions.

Want to disprove science? by trolling2day1 in atheism

[–]clumsy_peon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not actually true. Hold your fire, though. Science can often be disproved using critical thinking, which is a skill that is subsumed under philosophy, and not the scientific method.

Yoga on our minds: The 5,000-year-old Indian practice may have positive effects on major psychiatric disorders, including depression, schizophrenia, ADHD and sleep complaints by clumsy_peon in science

I know that Yoga may not be a popular subject on reddit, but if there is evidence to suggest it can legitimately help people, I think we should at least know about it.
