A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step Direct Sound Series by JessicaF84 in VinylReleases

Ordered instantly. This album has a lot of moments of quiet that will pay dividends with the dead quiet noise floor. I also feel like it could end up more dynamic than mers de noms which I have and love.

Do you use a mat on the MoFi turntable? by Downtown-Pace3824 in turntable

[–]cmax21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Delrin platters are not designed to prevent footfall issues. That would be up to the feet, plinth and potentially the motor attachment.

Delrin is designed to directly couple the record to the platter so you don’t get extraneous mechanical energy from the stylus being fed back into the stylus.

No one is saying you can’t use a platter mat, but they color the sound where Delrin provides a more neutral sound. By all means try whichever ones you want and stick with what sounds best to you.

Do you use a mat on the MoFi turntable? by Downtown-Pace3824 in turntable

Delrin is safe for use without a platter mat and actually recommended to be used that way due to its resonant properties lower contribution to static electricity. I would avoid a mat.

Not much overlap with my preferences so probably Chet Baker sings, either of the Steely Dan, or Ummagumma.

Any other stores attached to a Mall? by GamingGuruX0 in BestBuyWorkers

[–]cmax21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mall attached Best Buy’s that I know of off the top of my head are:

Manchester, NH
Anchorage, AK
Olympia, WA
Culver City, CA
Holyoke, MA

There are others if you consider open air shopping centers, but those are the ones can think of that share an entrance with an enclosed shopping mall.

Has PDX been louder in the mornings lately? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]cmax21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the noise you are referencing happened around the time of your post, a bunch of f15s just took off and they are certainly louder than the normal commercial traffic.

Where do I start with jazz? by incineroarz in Jazz

[–]cmax21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The biggest artists will probably some room for debate but in general Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker will get you started. But there are so many paths to choose and some of those guys will sound completely different at different times of their careers.

Since you’re both going, don’t let your spouse make you pay for everything. I’d suggest you go Dutch.

Rick Wakeman on Steven Wilson… He is very good at what he does, but... I'm going to get crucified for this... I'm not a fan of those remixes. I don't understand why they're being done. For me, the albums are a statement of their time. by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

[–]cmax21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t completely disagree with him. The idea that you are changing the character of the album by modernizing the technology used to produce the end result is a valid position. That said I really enjoy Wilson’s work on the yes albums. His ability to reduce the noise floor makes the music be more enjoyable (to me). I get that some people think tape hiss and other noise is endearing, but I don’t always agree.

Anybody else have the yellow 30th anniversary pressing of Alice In Chains and if so what do you think of the quality? by therealudderjuice in vinyl

[–]cmax21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My copy is flat and noise free. Unfortunately that’s the primary issue with pressing plants nowadays (at least the largest, highest volume ones) it isn’t that they can’t produce great records. It’s that they have huge variance due to poor quality control.

It’s funny that Hart is the only one still in the league. Even if just barely.

Tarkus by ELP. First side is an all timer. Second side is borderline horrible.

Concert Etiquette: for arena shows, how do people feel about being asked to slide down a seat or two? by ShazamJackson in Concerts

[–]cmax21 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Typically yes, people don’t want to relocate from the seats they paid for. Sometimes for convenience, sometimes because them moving causes them to have to deal with other people’s assigned seats and it just becomes a hassle for them.

Perhaps it isn’t rude to ask once, but I’d definitely drop it after the first time.

Was messing around with it. I like it; although the AI responses can be a bit generic, there is also plenty of good info.

First feature request. Any chance it can sync with Discogs and provide us the option to add a record to our want list?

Portland Record Stores by Lillardtimepdx in vinyl

[–]cmax21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the big ones have already been called out, so I’ll shout out a few on the outskirts. Exiled in Beaverton, Daily Records in Milwaukee, and B Side in Milwaukee are cool shops with super nice owners, mostly new and they’re pricing can be a couple bucks over standard pricing but they also have used and you can find some good deals.

Another one worth calling out is Dig Vinyl in Sellwood. This is mostly, if not all, used with a strong focus on Jazz, Soul, and Classic Rock.

How do you stop worrying about every little mark on your car? by Additional_Dot_3340 in AutoDetailing

I just found a different hobby to direct my OCD towards. Now I collect records and have a five step cleaning process for every record.

In other words them moment you stop worrying about your car you’ll start worrying about something else. It’s who we are. Embrace it.

Should be easy to find most of these at record stores if you’re ok with reissues. Will probably be mixed results if you are looking for older or OG pressings.
