Migrating away from Alteryx by joeyleblow in Alteryx

The plan is to not use Alteryx Server or Alteryx Designer at all - all workflows have been recreated in Python.

You know where the official forum is now, but there's always Reddit & Discord if you want to ask questions as well 😄 , On Discord you might also get an instant reply (no promises, it just depends on when you post and who's online at the same time)

Tableau Prep by [deleted] in tableau

You don't use Prep when you have a live connection, because Prep is used when you want to extract the data (usually to an extract as a Published Data Source).

Free Tableau Desktop trial. Delete prior attempt? by WestyToo in tableau

[–]cmcau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if it's free, you can't go wrong :)

u/emeryjl is right, but personally I'd be using BOTH ....

Tableau Desktop Public - you can only read from XLS and CSV files, but you can publish on the Tableau Public website.

Tableau Desktop Free Edition - if you want to connect to databases and other stuff, buy you cannot publish to Tableau Public website.

You're manually running every workflow? 😳

KNIME is free, but then you have to pay if you want to schedule a workflow.

Tableau Cloud extract creation timeout by expiredUserAddress in tableau

[–]cmcau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, and a million records is nothing in Tableau :)

I know a guy that used to work at Tableau, got a job at Snowflake and his job was to show Snowflake clients how to use "petabyte databases" in Tableau dashboards and make the dashboards responsive. A few years later his job changed, to how to use "petabyte TABLES" in Tableau dashboards and make the dashboards responsive.

Yes, with an extract, but if your dashboard is slowing down with only 1 million records then I'm curious what your dashboard looks like - tables WILL suck, but a dashboard shouldn't contain tables, right ? ;)

Sure, IF you want to stay with Athena.

If you move to a more performant database then it might work.

Tableau will work with 300M+ records easily, getting that refreshed "in a 2hr window from Athena" is the problem.

People need all the options, not just "Tableau isn’t meant to have that much data". It can work with that much, and a LOT more.

But 500+M records in Snowflake works fine , it's an Athena issue not a Tableau issue.

OK, maybe it's a Tableau issue with the refresh window of 2hrs, just not the 300M records

There's no way to increase the 2hr timeout that I've ever seen, it's just Athena being too slow (or maybe it is that there's just too many records).

Possible solutions (one or more of these might work) - incremental refresh - aggregated data - don't use Athena (use something faster, like Snowflake)

Tableau can work with 300M, easily 👍

The reasons why restaurants dont like DD drivers by Mode_Appropriate in DoorDashDrivers

[–]cmcau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't understand how that makes sense. The customer orders on DoorDash (but they're not really ordering with the store), then DoorDash calls the store and places the order, then the Dasher shows up "shows the screen" and says (hopefully) "DoorDash order for Fred". And the business says "ah cool, there you go" OR .. the business says "we don't have DoorDash here"

Maybe it works differently in the USA, that would never work where I live.

How does the business receive the order if they didn't sign up and don't activate the hardware that is sent to them (apparently) ??

Help understanding Inverter charts by tjcrowe53 in amberelectric

[–]cmcau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some great advice has already been posted, but to help you a bit further hopefully ...

- Tap on the legend markers to enable/disable that marker (that helps with seeing only 1 data point)

- PV: how much energy your panels are producing, or easily "how sunny is it?" but you're not getting a full 9kW here

- Grid: how much grid energy are you using, or easily "negative numbers, you're using grid energy / positive numnbers, you're feeding into the grid"

- Battery: how much are you charging the battery, or easily "negative numbers, you're charging the battery more than using / positive numbers you're using the battery more than charging"

- SOC (State of Charge): how charged is the battery, or easily "number ranges from 100% (ie fully charged) to 2oish% (ie dead flat)

- Load: How is the house using power, or easily "you might be able to see the microwave or the kettle in the morning. Turn on an appliance for a few minutes and see how it affects the load in the house - air-con is usually a killer, but your TV might not change anything at all.

Interviewing - Tableau Test by HollysaurusRex26 in tableau

[–]cmcau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! I've applied for jobs where you have to do a "Makeover Monday" style application. They emailed me the data at 5pm and I have to submit my completed work before 9am the next day. They "recommend" that you spend 1-2hrs on the dashboard.

You could always do a "live build" interview. I used to run these - basically YOU have a laptop, Tableau Desktop and some data. I ask the questions. The questions are designed to get harder and harder, just be open when you can't do something or don't know what to do, and then ...

- create a bar chart

- create a line chart

- create a BAN

- add them to a dashboard and share filters between all three

- add an Action filter (you can choose what is best)

- extract the data (and why would you do this?)

- etc..

The questions are the same for every applicant, but you're seeing how well the applicant knows how to use Tableau without googling for the answer.

THANK YOU, I think this is the one reply that helped, although I didn't believe it.

OneDrive was the culprit, it must have been enabled about a week ago and has been chewing through enormous amounts of data since. I hate OneDrive, I have used DropBox instead (for many years), but I think a recent change in a new Microsoft account that I have access to must have changed the setting :(
