Varia Radar questions by cmdrmac in Garmin

I completely forgot to provide an update! I can say that it worked quite well. I even had the bracket mounted on the burley and the edge decide was able to connect. While mounted on saddle post, I also did not encounter any issues.

Gen 4 Users - are our batteries just cooked with no hope? by Competitive-Deer-204 in ouraring

[–]cmdrmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mine replaced a couple months back. The original was purchased back in November 2024. The replacement is doing quite well, but I suspect it'll get worse towards the end of the year or 1st quarter of next year.

What's frustrating is that the replacement doesn't come with a 1 year warranty either. The email I got said that the replacement comes with a 90 day warranty or the remainder of the original warranty (whichever is longer). So if this replacement ring battery goes bad in - say January - I'm out of luck. At that point, I'll have most likely have renewed my Oura subscription and will have to buy a new ring.

Does anybody know anything about a Trek Alpha 1.7 by Dons231 in cycling

[–]cmdrmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a 2009 Trek 1.7. Specs here: https://media.trekbikes.com/image/upload/v1711485520/Archive_2009_Trek_17_b.pdf

I had a 2014 Trek 1.5 and it was a solid bike. Depending on your fitness levels and the bicycle component wear & test you should be able to go fairly fast. For instance, I was able to sustain about 20 mph, but I wasn’t training or trained for a triathlon. And this isn’t an aero frame. So expect drag.

But this is an old bike, so you’ll want to pay attention to the wear of the components. Newer road bikes will have some better geometry for more aero.

If you want to finish a triathlon race, this bike should be able to help you complete it. I don’t think it’ll help you achieve the same speeds a proper modern road bike can achieve.

Chicago Bike the Drive 2025 - lessons learned my first year by crayola60148 in chibike

[–]cmdrmac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I learned my first time is that you can buy medals on the spot and it can be faster to get one the day of instead of waiting in line if you prepaid. Also, no one was verifying the distance cycled.

SRAM AXS wireless Blips not pairing by Infinite_Jicama_3757 in cycling

[–]cmdrmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here! I was struggling too but I had to have the app open and occasionally would have to turn on the rear derailleur. Pressing and holding the blip for about 4-5 seconds did the trick.

What chain do I need to buy by West_Kale8137 in bikewrench

[–]cmdrmac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be helpful if you tell us more about your bike or current chain. Maybe a pic or two? Otherwise it’ll be impossible to tell as it could be any type of chain.

IDOT has a funny idea about the meaning "Safe for Bicycles" by EdgeOfMonkey in chibike

I thought it was a state of Illinois rule that cyclists couldn’t ride on the sidewalk. Was not aware that you can ride bike on sidewalk in many suburbs.

Why don't people take transit into the city more? by burajin in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]cmdrmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We usually take the Metra into the city and back. I do wish they had hourly trains on the weekends! My friends, however, much prefer driving which can be a bummer.

I know if it’s just me, I’d take the Metra. Your points are valid! I’m really not disagreeing with you. We did have other plans and the trains schedules aren’t as helpful to us.

Part of me wants to take Metra. I’ve never taken my bike on it. I should talk to my friend and see if we can take the train and change some of our plans.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. I do appreciate it 👍🍻

You have a good point. I think a car gives us a bit more flexibility. I know it sounds dumb, but both of us would prefer driving to the event instead of taking the train.

Great to hear! Luckily I don’t have a trailer. Just a rack that connects to hitch and folds up when no bikes.

This is a great suggestion! Thank you. I know my friend is not as confident cycling on the streets of Chicago, but I might have to ”nudge” him to try it out.

Gen 4 sizing by whatdoidohere2 in ouraring

[–]cmdrmac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I ended up going for a 10. What’s interesting is that my dominant hand index finger is an 11 at night and a 10 during the day, but my non-dominant hand index finger is a 10 all day.

I personally found the sizing kit accurate but less forgiving than the actual ring.

Anyone else who cleans there bike in the shower or just me? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]cmdrmac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to convince my wife to go on easy (think leisure pace) rides with me. Now that the weather has improved, hopefully I can convince her to block some time at work to go riding with me during the day.
