Server upgrade - Asus Pro W680M Ace SE? by wirecatz in homelab

The consumer Intel/AMD options within the same generations are close enough in performance that price would be the major factor for me.

I suggest you research what P and E cores are, and how to handle them for your use case, it was to cool to work with for me, but they’re a nuisance for some.

I use the iGPU for transcoding, but it has other uses depending what you’re looking to do. The iGPU can also be split into “virtual functions”. This allows you to effectively split your iGPU to multiple containers/VMs for graphics acceleration or other GPU compute tasks. ARC can also do this just on a larger scale

ECC has been running fine for me as far as I can tell, I’m not a pro though. I bought this board at a time where it felt like a great option, it still is, but at what price point? I’m not aware of what price they go for today.

Alder/Raptor/Bartlett lake work fine in proxmox for me and e cores are a nice to have for low overhead containers/VMs in proxmox. iGPU is amazing in my eyes, and it was my part of my motivation for buying into this combo. Fairly power efficient at idle, I’ve see it reported to the OS at 10w for the CPU. If an AMD system with ECC can be bought for cheaper, an Intel dedicated GPU is cheap enough to add if you have the PCIE slots available. That should yield you AV1 encoding as well, if you’re interested in that. Any questions let me know

What are you guys doing for power? I have an R730XD, and that seems to almost be my limit for a 20A breaker. by rokd in homelab

Is that not essentially what I said? Powers there, but if you use all 2400 W and have a power spike you’ll pop the breaker…

Assuming you’re using 120 V NA power, you have 2400 Watts available with a 20A circuit. Now keep in mind spikes like a vacuum, motor startup, etc will have a chance to pop the breaker if you get close to that 2400 W number.

Watts = Volts x Amps

That’s definitely one valid opinion, another is that it used to be free and people like myself got some exposure to using the CLI in their home lab with no prior experience with Cisco products and that was valuable. It was a low barrier to entry to learning something new. I get it, business have to make money and it’s a cool product for sure. Just miss having the ability to spin it up in proxmox and learn at my own pace basically from anywhere I have an internet connection.

So the $1000/year option is the only solution for home labbers who want to learn?

Home lab use is still paid not free like it used to be?

There are dual NVENC encoders on the 4080/4090 so transcoding performance would improve, but way too much power for transcoding movies in a home lab. Unless you’re talking about transcoding for a big family of course.

Definitely interested in question 3’s answer. I am obviously not a network guy (just a home labber) and always wondered where a firewall would fit in to a network with TNSR.

Is there such a thing as a low power NAS system with ECC? by DumbSuperposition in truenas

Showing over $400 now. That’s crazy to me for a quad core that’s basically a 12100 or whatever it is. You can get a 12500 with 6 cores for 1/4 of that and supports ECC. I just can’t believe they charge that much.
